Bill Richardson on the gay issues debate hosted by Melissa Etheridge, when asked, said that he thought that being gay was absolutely a choice. When Etheridge asked again to make sure he understood the question, he repeated that it was a choice.
Anyways, that bothered me. 8/20/2008 11:06:58 PM |

The Skinny on Evan Bayh:
Based on his voting record:
Favors: Abortion is a woman's right The Patriot Act harms civil liberties Illegal immigrants earn citizenship Support & expand free trade Expand the armed forces Allow churches to provide welfare services
Strongly Favors: More federal funding for health coverage Require hiring more women & minorities Same-sex domestic partnership benefits Death Penalty Replace coal & oil with alternatives Make taxes more progressive Stricter limits on political campaign funds
Opposes: Teacher-led prayer in public schools Drug use is immoral: enforce laws against it Privatize Social Security Mandatory Three Strikes sentencing laws
Strongly Opposes: Absolute right to gun ownership Parents choose schools via vouchers
No opinion: US out of Iraq

It doesn't bother me...homophobia is what scares me, but no one knows where the impulse to be attracted to your own sex comes from scientifically.
behavioral scientists will tell you it is still an environmental and development set of psychology that does it....doesn't mean it's implicitly a 'choice' as so much as a set of experiences someone goes through that dispositions them to be gay. 8/21/2008 9:35:16 AM |

Choice is likely a joke anyway. At best, our supposed free will comes from random quantum activity.
That said, I utterly reject any notions of hardwired sexuality. Sexual behavior changes dramatically based on the circumstances. Our current ideas of sexual orientation are a modern construct. 8/22/2008 12:58:05 PM |

Considering how ill informed the majority of the electorate is, I wouldn't want the name Edwards on my ticket if I were Obama.

what does marriage have to do with sexual orientation?
And besides that isn't true, marriages for love weren't that uncommon amongst the more "common" classes. Hell, in antiquity, talking pre-christian era, people got married because they were in love with each other. 8/22/2008 1:31:52 PM |

^ People believe crazy things. Joe Biden actually believes that raising the minimum wage will actually help poor people more than it hurts them, even though economic theory and empirical evidence suggests this is very very unlikely in most cases.
Yet...look whos on the VP spot??
And yes, I actually do believe that most progressive economic policies (min wage, tarrifs on trade, etc) are akin to Creationism. To support them requires ignoring clear empirical evidence to the contrary. And I seriously doubt anyone can argue other wise. They're akin to red-meat republican, supply-side bs.
