Quote : | "wow, there isn't a stringent list of acceptable ways to meet people? really? then why do you say i am up on a "high horse" for stating my opinion? you make it sound like YOUR way of meeting people is better than mine. " |
Because you presented your "opinions" as some sort of good rules of thumb, intiminating that somehow you were giving advice, versus just your singular opinion.
Yes my way of meeting people is better than yours, because I'm not pretentious in thinking that only certain locations or times are acceptable to meet people or interact with them. I keep my mind open to every situation and possibility, because you never know who you will meet, or where, or when. That's not "personal opinion" so much as it is pretty level-headed fact. The more open you allow yourself to be, the more opportunities to meet people you will have.
Quote : | " like you, what i said here was based on MY experiences. just like what you said was based on your experiences. i just said i'd prefer extracurriculars, etc to class. that is me. that doesn't mean i am on a high horse because my opinion is different than yours. i never said that you couldn't meet people in your classes. thats fine if you enjoyed your time in class just as much as outside. i never said there was anything wrong with that? did i? no, i didn't. i also never said that there was anything wrong with meeting people in your classes. " |
the difference here being scope of experience. yours is narrow, mine is wide.
And no, you didn't just say you preferred one to the other. you said one was acceptable and the other was "creepy". You also inferred that class time isn't for socializing at all, and that it's neither enjoyable or social in nature. Which you are wrong on all accounts. If you didn't enjoy being in class and learning, maybe you shouldnt have come to college. And a large part of the collegiate experience is learning to interact with your peers on multiple levels, not just extra-curricular.
Quote : | " so...that being said, i don't really thing that you can accuse ME of being on a high horse when you seem to be talking pretty haughtily about YOUR experiences. i stated several times that it was my opinion. if you read the thread. so take what you want from it, but it was just my opinion and i am typically really sarcastic which i also pointed out. so sorry, if you are so easily offended by what i said about class. oh no, my opinion is different from yours. better run for the motherfucking hills." |
Sure I can thing anything I want (think btw). My experiences are open-minded. Yours are narrow-minded. I read the thread and you are giving people terrible advice. I felt the need to step in and at least be a little voice of reason.
I'm not offended by your opinions, I replied because you represented those opinions as some kind of good advice, which it isn't.12/27/2007 8:57:18 PM |
khcadwal All American 35165 Posts user info edit post |
how do you know my opinions are based on narrowminded experiences? you don't.
if you see the above response you will see that i said that i DID meet people in classes i DID socialize with these people. and AGAIN i tried to point out the difference in meeting people in classes vs. trying to hit on or pick up people in class. i realize the title of the thread is how to meet people. but some of the posts i read early on in the thread talked about "picking up girls" by taking classes. this is all i was referring to. i feel like i mentioned that before. if i didn't sorry, but this is what i was responding to. NOT meeting people in general.
[Edited on December 27, 2007 at 9:01 PM. Reason : df]
my opinions weren't based on meeting people they were based on people that take certain classes to "pick up" or "hit on" girls. which is what i got from the title of the thread. which i realize was the wrong insinuation. but normally when people say "meet chicks" i don't normally take that in a positive manner. i just think of it as people trying to get some or whatever. but THIS is all i was referring to. not general socialization.
i just didn't think it was necessary for people to sit there and call me snobbish etc if they don't even know me. clearly they inferred the wrong things from MY posts but i was simply speaking about guys who want to take classes to like get a girl. or whatever.

whats the difference between the two?
You meet someone in class, get to know them, and maybe you are attracted to them and maybe not. How is that any different than meeting a potential date any other way? Seriously, it's just retarded to think that somehow you can only meet a mate in certain acceptable locations or situations.
and yes, you are being narrowminded with your whole made-up world that you can only meet friends some ways and romantic interests in other ways. 12/27/2007 9:04:09 PM |

see edit. it isn't about being romantic or not. that isn't what i'm talking about. i'm not talking about potential friendships or romances. i'm talking about what i took it as when i read the thread title. and when i read "meet chicks" i automatically associated it with "get some." i mean...usually when men refer to women as chicks, etc, i don't (watch out...another opinion...)as a woman always get a positive vibe from it. especially when it said meet normal chicks out side of engineering or whatever. so i figured it meant get some ass. that is all that is all i was referring to. do you understand at all or does it still make no sense?
that is what i am trying to differentiate between. just taking a class because you think there will be hot girls to hit on or taking a class because you might find someone with a similar interest.
this is why i even brought up extracurriculars. not as the only way of meeting someone, but of a maybe more engaging and interactive way to GET TO KNOW someone instead of just sitting in a class for the sole purpose of trying to find someone to hook up with.

once again.. ANYTIME a guy wants to meet a chick it's to get in her pants or her friends pants....
so anywhere you meet a guy and he starts talking to you.. It's to get in your pants. eventually..

still not seeing the difference here. if you are taking a class to meet girls to hook up with, how is it any better/worse to join an extracurricular activity to do the same thing?
I'm not CONDONING the practice (ideally you should take a class because you are interested in the subject matter), but being in a more balanced coed environment definitely adds a lot to any course. And flirting is fun, even on an innocent level. So what do you care if some guy is only in a class to try and flirt with girls he's attracted to in the class? Fun for everyone! And if the guy is a doofus or creepy, he would have been the same way in any other situation too. 12/27/2007 9:13:26 PM |
khcadwal All American 35165 Posts user info edit post |
^ i guess i see that point. but like you said earlier part of going to class is to learn. but i also feel as though people who take a class based solely on whether or not "hot girls" will be in it or not, are not the type of people i WANT to be flirting/socializing with. is that understandable? 12/27/2007 9:15:23 PM |

my point is i think guys that are like "uhhh step aerobics, yea dude the chicks will totally be in there" weird me out and are probably people i don't want to meet anyway.
but a guy thats like "oh history of blah blah blah, maybe i'll meet someone interesting in there" is not stupid/creepy.

maybe they dont care about the class at all, but chances are they will still learn SOMETHING from it, and who knows, maybe they will end up enjoying it. I certainly took several classes in college without a clue about whether I would enjoy them or not. And never say never, who knows you could have met the perfect guy in a situation like that. When I had the choice between PSY101 or some random history elective, you better believe I chose PSY101 because it was overwhelmingly female.
Neither class I was particularly interested in, had to take at least one, picked the one with the best change of faces in it (being that I was a comp sci major filled with complete spazzes and social retards for most of my time). Met a lot of cool people in there and more than a few girls who were more than happy to be in a class next to a guy, and even moreso a guy from a different program. 12/27/2007 9:22:16 PM |

well i never analyzed things this much, but i definitely didn't choose any classes based on the gender makeup of the class. i can see doing it when it is a random toss up between classes like that. but i just never picked out a class solely on the fact that i might meet a potential hook up in it (i know that isn't what you did, i am just saying). 12/27/2007 9:26:08 PM |

My junior year of HS I took a co-op class, well when I came back for my senior year I was taking the co-op II class. I walked in my class the first day and the teacher pulled me aside and said, we had a change in the class, it's no longer co-op II, it's been changed to "Fashion and Merchandising". She told me she understood if I wanted to find another class to take and she would help me out.
I looked around the room and out of 20 some people I was the 3rd guy. I told her I was fine and I would take the class. lol. A few of the hottest cheerleaders were in that class, and most of the girls were pretty hot overall. I enjoyed myself that year 12/27/2007 9:30:51 PM |

one of my good friends in high school broke his leg during summer football practice, so he signed up for Ballet.
couldnt walk until the last week of class, but the teacher made him wear a unitard and participate in the final show at the end of the year anyway. He was the only guy in the class and looked like a complete tard in front of most of the school.
He still said it was worth it to sit and see girls in spandex for a whole semester. 12/27/2007 9:39:05 PM |
