i dont know if i should believe any of these reviews anymore on account that someone exaggerated a tree shaking into a tree talking

alright, it didn't talk, but it's implied that the plants are sentient beings, correct?

No, it is not. They're simply evolving, like all other organisms on the planet. While far-fetched, it's not out of this world.

The fact that plants are the alleged menace is not the reason the movie sucked so bad. It's a valid idea and a valid vehicle for an antagonist.

No, what made the movie awful is that literally nothing is explained (unless you take it purely at face value, which only a fool would do). It is never proven that the trees were to blame, nor is it ever explained how the crisis ends.

Can someone explain this? That movie was freakin' brilliant. I have a feeling a lot of you people may have missed some things.

I think this flick looked awesome on paper, and should've come into the world as a novella or short story.

this is a major plotpoint. throughout the movie there are notions that things happen that we can't help, or explain, and they are never very cryptic about that. i don't know how you can be disappointed with this when you're built up to never knowing exactly what happened.

Didn't watch the movie but...

So the trees evolve to produce some sort of toxin that kills people - or makes people kill themselves, whatever. All species of tree evolve the same way to produce the toxin, or just one kind of tree. If one kind, then wouldn't "the happening" be restricted to one geographic area? If every species of tree (riiiight), the I guess all the people that live in areas far away from trees are safe - like the desert for instance.

I liked the concept of nature > humans but I am still trying to figure out how the wind had anything to do with the plants being pissed at people. I suppose maybe the movement of the trees/grass could cause it but that is a bit of a stretch.

*********Spoilers************

How fucked up was it that the people in that house shot those two teenagers? That was like one of the worst things I have seen in a movie. Also I just knew that Mrs. Jones was going to be like Satan or something and she was controlling the plants with her ways and house.

boredom and a free ticket compelled me to go see this last night at the 9:45 showing, I was also alone in the whole theater.
I thought this would work to my advantage, making less spooky things more scary. Nope. It was just a bad movie.

The dialogue and how it was executed was akin to a SciFi made for tv movie.

The plant defense premise, while fun to think about, just gets a big *carl face* from me.

Like someone else said, I think it would have been better on paper as a short story, but even then who knows.

It was hard to get really attached to any of the characters at all. John Laguiziamo's character I think was just there to be the first person to die that you may have been mildly attached to. I thought he was going to save the day with some stats or some math or something, but no The little girl was pretty much useless as most of the time she was kinda ignored. The chick who played Dorothy in Tin Man, can't remember her name, acted so out of it and wide-eyed and spaced out that I couldn't take anything she said seriously. And Mr. Walbergh . . well. Not only were his lines retarded but how he said them, nostrils a-flare, were even worse. He had some weird voice inflection thing going on the whole time. "O! no! m'aam! not at all! no way!" And what kinda faggot wears a mood ring, honestly!

I do wish the creepy old lady had more airtime. It was pretty satisfying to see her smash herself to death.

I was pretty sure it was him but you only saw his eyes in the rear-view mirror real quick and such but IMDB confirms it

finally fed up with the store clerk life

wahlberg did suck a big one in it, really unbelievable and unconvincing

all i was waiting for at the end of the movie was to see A film by Al Gore in the credits... it was a very political movie and not even a good one of them.

this is his first movie ive hated too

called on page 1.

This was an excellent idea for a movie. It could have been SO much better. I've been a fan of Shyamalan's for quite a while. I loved Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, Signs, and The Village... Lady was terrible and this movie was awful. I left wanting my money back.

The plot was good. It definitely had substance. The execution was abysmal.

A better resolution: When the girl was saying "I see in calculus." If that could've been a point where the plot turned where there was some sort of savior, like in the rest of his movies... No. There was nothing.

Also, the movie got preachy at the end. All this move did was give material to the Wayans Brothers for Scary Movie 5. That's it.

I just want to say that Unbreakable is a great movie

completely original and fantastically done

yes, it has a twist at the end, but tell me it doesn't fit so perfectly with the theme and idea of the movie

a fantastic movie

the little montage at the end (when anyone who has half a brain realized it halfway through the movie) ruined it for me. and as i said earlier, i thought it was an alright movie up until that point.

it's not the lack of a twist, it was the lack of a coherent ending. His twists usually give validation to the plot. There was no twist in this movie nor any plot validation.

And, for those of you hating on signs because of the fallacy of "OMG THE ALIENS INVADED A PLANET FULL OF STUFF THEY'RE DEATHLY ALLERGIC TO"

How retarded.

You're assuming the aliens knew they were allergic to water. How could we possibly know that?

I thought signs was a great movie and the ending sequence with the brother battling the alien with water was perfect. It made sense. It gave a rhyme and reason to the little girl's water issues. It gave a rhyme and reason to the brother's minor league career. It gave rhyme and reason to the son's asthma problems. It gave a rhyme and reason to the final words uttered by the wife. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps still. It was a perfect movie.

This movie, however, paled so much in comparison to shyamalan's talent.

One critic said: It was like I was a teacher, shaking my head while grading a subpar paper written by a bright student.

Because in the movie they actually say that the aliens were staying away from lakes and bodies of water... M. Night's character says he is leaving for a lake bc he thinks they do not like water.

Yes, this is coming from human's observation. So the alien's figure it out after the invasion. They're still vastly superior in physical ability and mental capacity (they can go from planet to planet).

It's like how an experienced handler approaches a snake. Yes, the snake will kill the man if he makes a wrong move. 99999/100000 he can beat the snake.

no, halfway through the invasion, the people were syaing "they're going away from bodies of water." That does not necessarily mean their first stop was away from a body of water. You're dismissing the possibility of a discovery by the aliens.

I dismiss it because my interpretation is that they are messing around in corn fields and areas in the center of huge landmasses bc there are no large bodies of water then they said the aliens are staying away (I don't know the exact quote) from lakes and bodies of water. I don't care enough to be really concerned with it though and it's been years since I have seen it, no need to revisit.

that I can agree with.

Besides, I think most audiences will forgive logical fallacies. They will not forgive an unsubstantiated ending, unless the open ending is well done. This one, was not.

Ok so I just started to think about this(which makes the movie even worse if possible).

There is a scene where they are running from the wind, which is moving almost like a tidal wave toward them. First off, them running from the wind made me bust out laughing in the middle of the movie. Second, were the plants controlling the wind or something? Wind doesn't "move" like that, it makes no sense. It would imply that not only were the plants in on it, but the wind was helping the plants? What the fuck?

It didn't matter if they knew or not. The problem is that the atmosphere is saturated with water. If they were hurt by water they would be writing in pain just being within Earth's atmosphere
