YES, of course i can CHOOSE. in fact, I LIKE choices. now i have the choice between:

non-smoking seafood restaurants
non-smoking burger joints
non-smoking thai
non-smoking chinese
non-smoking italian
non-smoking afghani
non-smoking mexican
non-smoking japanese
non-smoking southwest tex-mex
non-smoking german
non-smoking fast food
non-smoking korean
non-smoking southern barbeque
non-smoking french
non-smoking hungarian
non-smoking midwestern comfort food
non-smoking mongolian
non-smoking mediterranean
non-smoking ethiopian
non-smoking persian

I've got lots of motherfucking choices.

but before the smoking ban went into effect, i only had about 1/2 of 1 percent of the choices available as now, if i didnt want my child to choke on some filthy smoker's exhaust fumes in a confined space.

even as a smoker i hated smoke in restaurants. bars not so much, but restaurants that had smoking (most of them) sucked. my wife never smoked and we didnt want our kid around that shit for sure.

its a fact that non-smokers (ie the majority population) now are more inclined to go out to eat, or out for entertainment that they dont have to sit or stand all night in a filthy smoke-filled room.

you guys carry on with your lofty arguments about John Locke. take a smoke break back in the alley whenever you feel like it. but know this, you smokers and your "smokers rights" are going the way of the dinosaurs.

seattle != the rest of the country

you still haven't gotten that through your thick skull

in Charlotte for example, there are tons of smoking places and tons of non smoking places

you have dozens or hundreds of choices for non smoking bars and restaurants already...and you know what? the bars and restaurants DECIDED ON THEIR OWN TO IMPLEMENT A NON SMOKING POLICY

what they didnt need the government to spend money to have a statewide or city wide ban? whats that, they were able to do it themselves? we dont need big brother to tell us how to live our lives like some kind of mindless idiots in seattle

so go hang out in seattle with your free clinics with clean needles for heroin addicts while you make fun of people who smoke cigarettes

i'm done in this thread...you've been thoroughly pwnt by multiple people, just like your side always does in these "smoking ban" threads

HOW DARE YOU HARM MY LUNGS WHILE I'M WILLFULLY HARMING MY OWN LIVER

ps: how come your precious european countries with their socialist policies that you love so much still allow smoking? I DON'T UNDERSTAND

first off, nice use of "motherfucking." it really elevated your argument

also 1/2 of 1 percent = 1/2 perfect...just for next time

and are you trying to say that the 99.5 percent of the types of restaurants you listed allowed smoking before some ban went into effect? where do you live that had that many restaurants with smoking? i could see it decades ago maybe, but not in your generation.

Im not a smoker and im not for a federal ban. Let a business decide what it wants to do, not the govt.

People will go to where they want to if they have options. People choosing is against the democratic strategy though. Choice is bad you see.

People who are worried about thier kids inhaling some second hand smoke, does your kid have a cellphone? When you take them out do you give them a gas mask to protect them from car emmisions?

dont worry tho

NC, SC, and VA will fall soon enough. you're on the losing end of this fight. I suspect Texas will be the last to fall.

damn didnt realize the liberal infestation of anti-choice had affected that many weak minded states

dont worry the cackalacks will remain strong

sorry to see you give up your rights in seattle though...might as well start fitting you monkeys for your tracking chips since you arent capable of choosing anything yourselves

btw Charlotte is one of the 30 largest cities in the country...and it doesnt have a ban yet? But...but...but why? I figured all huge cities would enact this trash legislation...hmmm this confuses me! I don't understand why they didn't fall in line with the rest of the big cities!

So wait, is the smoking ban in all those states just indoors everywhere, or just state buildings or what? I knew the state building thing in NC, but if they ban public places...

Well, that means no more Waffle House trips at 2:30am when I'm starving and have the craving for both a waffle and a cigarette...

that is the current list of states which have a "statewide" ban on smoking either in restaurants, or in bars, or in both.

more are in the works.

even states without a statewide ban have municipalities which have made smoking illegal in either bars and/or restaurants.

i have no problem with ban on smoking in restaurants but i feel completely different about bars.

People go to the bars to drink, meet random skanks, and is not exactly a family/professional environment like restaurants. Part of going to the bar is people smoking just like part of going to the bar is having some drunk bitch flash her tits everywhere.

"a lot of time"

wow...real convincing

I've lived in Charlotte, in the city not the suburbs, for more than 20 years of my life, including the last 5 years. I think I'm a bit more qualified to categorize the demographics of the city than somebody who lives thousands of miles away and has spent "a lot of time" in "various suburbs"

^^I agree. I don't even smoke inside restaurants but its absurd to ban smoking in bars/clubs

ok dickweed,

my parents Live in charlotte metro area. my ex lived in matthews. my sister-in-law went to UNC-C, worked downtown, and her and all her gay theatre friends lived in the Fourth Ward. My uncle lived in South Charlotte and had a house on lake Norman, all sorts of cousins lived in Kannapolis and China Grove.

Ive been to Charlotte at least 100 times. it's a fucking shithole and I'd never live there, unless my only other options was Detroit or Toledo.

hey i've been to seattle twice...i'll bet i know a lot more about it than you do even though you've lived there for years

yeah, i know some people. just my mom and dad and uncle and ex-fiancee and my sister in law.

ive flown in and out of CLT too many times to remember. ive taken the piedmont amtrak between charlotte and raleigh way more times than i want to recall.

Ive spent many days and nights all over your fine city. the place truly is run over with skanks and thugs and nascar retards. then throw a bunch of bank yuppies on top of the mix for good measure.

but don't be mad at me: i didn't make you have to live there.

and by the way, Seahawks crushed your Panthers.

the fact that you think its possible for you to know more about a city from visiting numerous times than someone who grew up in and lives in the city is about as idiotic as most of your opinions and continues to show your elitist liberal arrogance

our mayor is a punk bitch, he welched on the bet with your mayor in 05

im not sayin i "know" more about Charlotte in general... But Ive been tehre enough to know what it's like. And its obvious that you have a biased opinion and are blinded to the fact that your hometown is, indeed, a shithole. I cant blame you, i'd be depressed about it myself.

as for your mayor, I dont know much about him. I do know that our mayor is a real arrogant, elitist, I-know-whats-best-for-everyone nanny-state liberal prick though. i cant stand the guy. who the fuck elected him anyhow.

If I want to open a coffee shop and only serve people with blue eyes, should I be able to that?

how about these women's-only gyms? what's the deal there? I guess some feel that sexism is ok, while racism isn't

iow, you liberals are inconsistent, illogical, and completely without understanding

your "ends justify the means" approach in the use of authoritarian force to fight racism (a civil liberty) is detestable

now go ahead and tell me that racism is illegal"

No, you should not be able to open a coffee shop and serve only people with blue eyes. It's wrong, and it is rightfully illegal. That's a basic principle I strongly believe in, and it's not based on "emotion and dreaming." And, again, I think you need to check yourself when you start having ideas about not needing the Civil Rights Act. And I never said that made you racist. I said it made you wrong.

I do not know what the deal is with women's-only gyms. I haven't read much about them, but I imagine they skirt the laws by establishing themselves as private clubs where they maintain the right to reject members. Like a lodge.

You mentioned that racism is a civil liberty, and I want you to know that this is America, and you should feel free to start your own private, racist, chain-smoking bar. Nobody is stopping you. In fact, there are probably about a half dozen such places in Raleigh already. If that's something you're interested in, you should look into a membership...

And on the issue of smoking in public restaurants and bars, we obviously disagree. The rights of the property owner are more important to you than the rights of the workers. I'm the other way around.

no

you made a point

a weak one, only supported by your opinion of what a decent society should be, and not on principle

I disagree, because you are wrong

^^^you're pretty smug since the gov. makes people do something you agree with...

thats the fundamental difference between most of the people opposed to this type law and those for it. Speaking for myself (and I gather most of the people against this type legislation), I loathe the gov. making laws that govern personal choice even if I agree with the principle behind it.

Next it'll be regulating the fat content in meals restaurants serve...poor diet is proven to increase the risk of heart disease, which kills millions every year and increases insurance costs for everyone. The gov must protect people from themselves and their free will, right?

^No, cars and trucks and big rigs and whatevers are necessary. We don't have the money to build reliable public transportation at this time. We're still working on coming up with the perfect system and getting funds for it.

And I'd like to add to my response to the stupid car analogy. Westarted regulating what shit you could pump out of your car like years ago. Some douchebag's pumping nasty shit into the air out of his car that he hasn't had inspected in ten years...you're fucking right, somebody's gonna call the cops on his ass. Cause what he is doing illegal, and he will get a ticket for it.

So, yeah, great analogy, guys...

if you're content to live in a mud hut and raise all the livestock and produce you need to survive, then vehicles may not be necessary. However, I doubt you'd be on the internet in the first place if you were content with such a miserly existance.

you're clearly wrong -- cars aren't necessary, but also, you clearly won't budge on that

so let's go further

since you think that those who choose to work in restaurants should be able to legally force owners to disallow smoking,

shouldn't those who choose to work in pit crews be able to legally force owners to disallow combustion engines?

I mean, you may think that cars are necessary to society, but is racing necessary?

or, how about valet parking?

you see bridget, you've got nothing

nothing

except a very strong desire to be right
