im a self proclaimed gang expert, and would be very suprised if this was not gang related. the five point star hat indicates a possible blood affiliation. someone earlier in this thread said "the hoover crips wear hats with an H's on them", but i promise you no crip from this area (durham, wake or chapel hill) would wear a 5 point star hat. this is not some inside info, this is just my personal opinion based on 3 years of local gang experience. i reserve the right to be wrong of course because I am humble, but I am pretty certain of this

Why people care about this:
We've had a string of school shootings which have shaken everyone up. These shootings have left lacking resolution because the killer has committed suicide. Additionally, the identity of the victims is rarely focused on, or in the case of VA Tech, there were just so many--so it's hard to pin down a single identity with which to sympathize.
So here, for the first time since the previous school shootings, we have a killer to go after and an identity to sympathize with (and what an identity! Eve was a complete sweetheart, someone we all "know"). All of our lack of resolution in previous cases is now being piled in to this one case.
Of course all of this is taking place in the more primal regions of our brains--a mix of revenge and hysteria. Then, all of this is transmitted through the psychic powers of television and the internet, our minds draw abstract comparisons between our own experiences as college students and the people we see on TV, and we become hooked--we all want to follow the case and the media will continue to oblige.
You could say, "this isn't a school shooting, this is something else", and maybe you'd be right, but your lizard brain sees them on about equal footing: it's the same community and the same problem; we're continually reminded that college campuses are not safe places.
We are Meerkats...

that's just not true. Even with the recent spate of mass-shootings and other isolated incidents, college campuses statistically remain some of the safest places around. No, they're not some kind of utopia where nobody ever gets hurt, robbed or killed, but on the whole they're still safer than than the general population and much safer than big cities. It's exactly because they're so safe that stories like these make the headlines. That's the definition of "news" - if this was commonplace (like, for example, murders in Detroit or DC) then it would no longer be considered news.
Of course nobody should be lulled into a false sense of security or complacency anywhere they are, but then again you needn't be on-alert all the time because you think that "you're going to be next". If you go through college thinking that chances are high, or even non-negligible, of being shot in a classroom or murdered a mile from campus you're just going to be adding a lot of unneeded stress to your life.3/10/2008 12:54:26 PM |

i like arguing off topic....jesse and sharpton and now mongoose and meerkats
nonetheless, if you drew a big circle with a small circle concentrically placed inside it
the absolute MOST you could accredit their relation is that youd write "meerkat" in the inner circle and "mongoose" in the outer meaning at best all meerkats are mongoose but not all mongoose are meerkats
meerkat genus SURICATA
mongoose genus HERPESTES
Herpestes is simply the namesake, or the keystone species of the family...a respresentative of the ideological conditions for classification in that family
that was fun

no, all i meant was that he could possibly be a crip not a blood. i was mistaken about the hat. its just that east coast bloods use a five point star as a symbol, whereas most local crip gangs in this area use a six point "star of david" as a symbol to represent folk nation. however, there may be a local "hoover crip" set in durham which has affiliation with the LA hoover crips, therefore the east coast, or chicago based, folk and people ties may not apply. so, i am altering my theory a bit 3/10/2008 4:20:19 PM |

im not in a gang unit, but i plan to be in the future. till then its just a personal interest of mine, but I have had a very good share of experience with gangs/members over my three years in law enforcement. durham does have small local gangs but they also have national affiliations as well. my expertise is not in durham but i can assume that durham has followed a path like raleigh did in that many of raleighs "local" neighborhood gangs got rolled into larger gangs as the larger ones grew. in raleigh, that would be the bloods.3/10/2008 4:38:47 PM |

^^"integrity of the case"? That's mentioned constantly on television by police officers as an excuse for not answering certain information but what specifically does it mean? I guess there might be a lot of reasons, but there is one very crucial reason for not revealing information in a case like this. Why issue a photo, but not a timestamp? 3/10/2008 6:51:32 PM |
