I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the producer said he owned the rights, where in reality he only owned half. He told WB that he owned all the rights though, although I have read that fox notified WB before production started, so I dunno.

the real issue is that while the NBS broadcast and all the other things like that are cool

you can't feed that in to the theaters

and hell, i read the first issue again last night and couldn't really figure out how the movie is going to start (other than a 5 minute montage)

^^^I haven't lost hope. I can understand remaining cautious, but I'm willing to give this movie the benefit of the doubt. It can still work.

^^This is true, they'd be really hard-pressed to condense everything into a 3-hour movie. I think it could be safely done if they split this up into 6 hours, and just break the movie up into pieces ala the LotR movies.

The WATCHMEN tie-in animated
DVD "Tales of the Black Freighter" hits shelves on March 24th and we've got a look at some new pics from the film. The project stars the voice of Gerard Butler as a marooned castaway who's desperate to return home to warn his family about "The Black Freighter," a haunted pirate ship that steals the souls of the damned. The story is told in the "Watchmen" graphic novel as a comic-within-a-comic that one of the characters reads. Because Zack Snyder felt it was too much to add to the film, he decided to make the story a standalone adventure. Check out the pics below!

This awesome-looking scene, where Dr. Manhattan visits Moloch's "vice den" and vaporizes the patrons, circa 1960, occurs as part of a montage after journalists confront Dr. Manhattan and accuse him of having caused some of his friends and coworkers to die of cancer. Manhattan retreats to Mars and thinks back on his life, including courting Janey Slater, getting disintegrated in his intrinsic field-test chamber, reassembling in the cafeteria, and then this little moment at Moloch's dive

The Black Freighter is basically a story-within-a-story that is suppose to mirror the events that are happening in the main storyline. That's my understanding of it, anyway.

and then maybe you'll understand who the black freighter is truly connected to and why it matters

^same. i've heard that black freighter is more relative in a 2nd or 3rd reading of watchmen. i guess once you know the ending of the stories (watchmen and BF), you will appreciate it more. i plan on reading it again before i see it in theaters to refresh myself.

^ You'll see the kid reading the comic, but I don't think we'll see any of the Black Freighter story at all.

But when the Watchmen DVD comes out, there will be an Extended Cut which will put the Black Freighter animation in at the appropriate moments.

I don't know if any of you read Alan Sepinwall's TV blog (he did those great write-ups about the Sopranos final season) but he posted some thoughts on the 18 minutes or so he saw of the movie at Comic-Con:

Obviously, he's not going to be able to squeeze in every detail of a sprawling 12-part epic, what he has included feels very much like the Moore/Gibbons comic come to life. There's even one scene in there, involving Silhouette from The Minutemen, that Dave Gibbons admitted he wished he and Alan Moore had thought to include in the book. And even if the rest of the movie is terrible (which I doubt), I'm going to be a first-day (possibly first showing) ticket buyer if only to see more of Jackie Earle Haley, who could not be more perfect casting as Rorshach. I got chills watching him in the cafeteria scene. It almost feels like all those previous aborted attempts to film "Watchmen" were destined to fail until Haley was both old enough and had resurrected his career, because I couldn't imagine any other actor being as right for the part."

have you guys been watching the Watchmen Motion Comics from iTunes. I am not a comic guy, don't know shit about Watchmen and I have to say that these things are FANTASTIC. I had no interest in seeing this movie and that has now changed.

Looks like they are releasing these on bluray and dvd on 3/3.
