cheezcurd ... No idea, I haven't been able to replicate that on any number of boxes ... maybe you have an extension that's causing problems?
Alternately, you could try using a fresh profile and see if that fixes it, extensions can cause problems sometimes if the developer is not careful or doesn't follow the rules. 6/23/2008 10:25:49 AM |

Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 Now Available for Download, First Look http://lifehacker.com/5063202/firefox-31-beta-1-now-available-for-download-first-look
Quote : | "Faster JavaScript
We've shown you just how fast Firefox 3.1 is compared to other browsers, and most of that is due to the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine. Despite the fact that TraceMonkey comes built into 3.1, you still have to know how to enable it to take advantage. Here's how it works:
1. Open about:config in your browser. 2. Paste javascript.options.jit.content into the filter. 3. Double-click the remaining preference to set the boolean to true." |
so why is it built-in but not enabled?

Anyone using the beta having trouble with the tabs being too sensitive? 90% of times when I go to switch tabs by click on them, it will pull the tab into its own window instead. Really fucking annoying.
edit: Apparently it is a feature, called tab-tearing, but it is way too sensitive. People are saying that the newest build was supposed to be less sensitive, but it really is pretty much the same, a huge pain in the ass.

Yes, I use a variant of it though from Portable Apps: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/test
Mainly because at work I need to have multiple copies of Firefox installed to do development tests on. I haven't really had any problems with 3.1 beta so far. Every now and then it will crash on me; usually attribute that to an extension conflict/problem as I'm running a few that aren't technically compatible with 3.1 yet. Sort of forced them to work haphazardly.11/24/2008 6:42:01 PM |

^ It's kinda odd, because it behaves differently on all three boxes I have it installed on. I never ever get accidental tears on my ubuntu box, and I get very few of them on one of the extra windows desktops I have at work, but on my windows laptop it tears just from being clicked on, no dragging at all. All three installations are as up to date, I'll see if the patch posted a few up helps at all. 11/25/2008 6:52:45 AM |

so i just messed around with my userChrome.css for the first time, pretty proud of myself. moved my delicious and FF bookmarks toolbars to the left of the address bar, hid the label from the bookmark folder, hid a delicious button and switched out the icon for another
here's the css if anybody cares
@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* set default namespace to XUL */
.bookmark-item[container="true"][label="home"] { list-style-image: url('chrome://browser/skin/places/editBookmark.png') !important; padding:0px 1px 0px 4px !important; -moz-image-region: rect(0px 16px 16px 0px) !important; }
.bookmark-item[container="true"][label="home"] > label { display:none !important; }
#ybToolbar-bookmarksview-nonbookmarks { display:none !important; }
#ybToolbar-options { display:none !important; }
#ybToolbar-chevron { list-style-image: url('http ://ken.kaisia.com/images/tagIcon.png') !important; padding:0px 2px 0px 4px !important; -moz-image-region:rect(0px, 16px, 16px, 0px) !important; }
the part that took the longest was the ybToolbar-chevron. i wanted to use the chrome://ybookmarks/skin/tagIcon.png but finally i found a forum post saying that importing other jars was no longer allowed, so i had to upload the icon to the web instead. alternatively i could unpack the delicious jar and point to it on the local filesystem but it's only 658 bytes, what the hell]12/3/2008 2:07:52 PM |

I just tried it and it only took about 3 or 4 pixels of movement, and the tab was still well within the 'tab bar' when it broke (ok probably not pixels at my resolution but 3 or 4 increments of as small a mouse movement as possible)
that is way too sensitive, you should at least have to drag it outside of the tab bar itself before it will break out
also there's some problems with facebook chat updating after the initial load, not that I ever use it

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_future_of_firefox_no_tabs_built_in_ubiquity.php
Quote : | "Look Daddy: No Tabs
Oliver Reichenstein and Aza Raskin, head of user experience at Mozilla, have been thinking about the future of tabs in Firefox, and some of the resulting mockups are quite intriguing.
Reichenstein argues that tabs were a good solution for an earlier age of the Internet, where users hardly ever had more than ten tabs open at any given time. Now, however, as browsers are slowly turning into operating systems, a new paradigm for organizing this information has become necessary.
The current generation of browsers does a decent job when it comes to keeping a current browser session organized, but Reichenstein wants to create a system that structures the browser more like a mutimedia file system. He proposes a new interface that looks more like iTunes than today's Firefox, with folders, libraries, and bookmarks in a sidebar. Try Tree Tabs
If you would like to get a glimpse of what tabs on the side look like, have a look at Tree Tabs, a nifty addon that puts tabs on the side, and which features a huge number of options for customizing the experience.
If you are on a netbook, for example, where vertical space is very limited, Tree Tabs (maybe in combination with Tiny Menu) will allow you to reclaim some of your screen estate." |

^ you know, i like the IDEA of the vertical tree tabs thing...but when i installed the first thing that i immediately hated was how much it cut down on my browser real estate
sure, you can make it smaller, but then you can barely read the open tabs...also, having this huge gray space when i only have ~10 tabs open seems like an awful waste
the tabbing system is nice because it generally doesn't take up any more space regardless of whether you have 1 or 20 open (though you have to scroll)...i'm sure there's a double-row tab extension, maybe i'll try that

I pretty much hated it yesterday, but the more I use it the more I like it.
I'm working on a good sized monitor and 99% of the websites I use have vertical content more-so than horizontal, so I don't really feel the loss of browser real estate.
Also I have occasions where I'm working with 20+ tabs and having them in trees is amazingly helpful in keeping them organized and easily accessible. 4/15/2009 11:10:47 AM |
quagmire02 All American 44225 Posts user info edit post |
that's probably true...i'm stuck with three 19" 4:3 monitors which, really, is useful for most things since i don't need wide screens (individually)...but when the browser is stuck on a 19" 4:3, it's kinda sucky 4/15/2009 11:18:21 AM |
