^ They're not as bad as you think. It usually helps if you have someone to run with, that way y'all can just shoot the shit the whole time. The benefits afterwards are free beer, wine, food and massages and a wicked runner's high. Most runners are pretty friendly too and talk to each other along the way, helping with encouragement. It's a really good time, except for the whole hating life because you've been running for almost 2 hours straight.
