that was an insane pass to lead Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuud on for that shot. I mean that shit just curved and slowed up perfectly for him.

Buffon def saved the italians on that one

I just watched a clip of the first goal and I've been trying to research offsides on the internet and I can't find anything but..

I know that when an offensive player goes off the field during the normal run of play, he is not considered to be in an offsides position, so why does a defender who was out of bounds as a result of normal play count as one of the 2nd to last defenders?

well I found this
Quote :
"From Advice to Referees 11.11:

"A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position."
"

That sucks because wasn't he injured on the play?

A few years back they changed the offside rule to only include attacking players who have an "influence on the play." While that includes players who influence the marking scheme of the defenders, an attacking player who is chilling out of bounds is not influencing the play. A defender who hasn't asked permission to leave the field is still effectively defending.

thats what i was thinking...im pretty sure he was thrown down to the ground by his own player(buffon)...and i figured he was considered in the play cause you arent supposed to leave the field on your own accord

i was kind of looking it up too to reassure what i was thinking, but i figured one of you guys would also do it...plus i was about 75% sure it was a goal

I understand that if you didn't count players out of bounds as one of the two second-to-last defenders, the rule would be taken advantage of but it's really not a fair rule for those who were injured. I guess by just sticking to a strict interpretation of "in or out of bounds, you still count," you're removing the referee's quick assessment/judgement of the situation, which probably isn't a bad thing.

well the only way you can deem the player injured is if the ref stops the game, which he didnt. so hes still a live player

Right...there's no shades of grey, no guys pretending to be injured on the side and then hopping back into the play, no one dashing for the touchlines on a five-on-two, etc.

the first goal? both announcers, and the people at halftime all said it was offsides. andy gray was pretty vivid about letting us know he thought it wasnt a goal

they definately look dangerous but they play like retards sometimes.

Up 2-0 with 20 minutes left and they are attacking like they are down 2-0

julie foudy is dumb as hell. you are a woman, you play soccer slow as hell, and apparently you grasp the concept of the offsides rule slow as hell too

^ c'mon, that post is just stupid. It isn't her being a woman, it's just simply how she feels about the situation. Also, in the 99 world cup, something similar happened against the woman, and it went the other way (as in it was called offsides), and she probably has that on her mind as well.
