Gee I sure hope Hollywood doesn't find this thread cuz all ya all have just pretty much ruled out all my favorite parts of action movies.
- of course he doesn't look back at the explosion, no it is not realistic that's the point. Larger than life is the point.
- of course the explosions, grenades, gun shots etc... have unrealistic sound effects. But, these sound effects are in some sense consistent across a large class of action movies so we know what is meant. Again, its larger than life.
- Yes lasers do not make sound in outer space's vacuum, but do you really want to watch Star Wars without the super cool lazery sound effects? It be like listening to fish. Gosh people.
- guy gets the girl. Well, by in large the nerd audience needs some assurance this is possible. Don't take this away from us.
- separate story lines that merge at the end. This may be overused, but I find this must be a more challenging thing to tell artfully. Like the way Babel unfolds. Or, The Usual Suspects, or Memento or well I don't care if there are a thousand of these it doesn't make the movie less interesting to me.
In short, stop yur hating. It could be much worse, go rent some Greek movies and reconsider your grumblings. 6/10/2008 6:40:29 PM |

-Slow motion as someone dies with one woman singing in the background
-Deaths you just know aren't real
These two are the main reasons The Two Towers is my least favorite LotR film.
-Hot girl that inexplicably goes for dumb main character
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and any Adam Sandler film come to mind
-gay/black/both best friend who gives advice and spouts stereotypical one liners for main white/straight/both character 6/10/2008 7:08:16 PM |

2/3 through the movie things start to fall apart for the main character (who was previously successful or gave the impression of improving) and you doubt things could get any worse for him/her. The writers expect you to abandon all hope at this point...BUT WAIT! In a few minutes things are gonna start turning around for our hero so you can start smiling again! Almost every hollywood movie follows this pattern. I can see it coming a mile away and it is old. The good part is it usually lets me know when a bad movie is getting close to being over.
just thinking of recent movies i've seen: that will smith movie where he's a po guy taladega nights, old school, dodgeball, ron burgandy (all those will Ferrell and similar type movies have it real bad) 6/11/2008 7:00:57 AM |

^Following the 2/3 formula for romantic movies, especially romantic comedies...
The relationship that goes completely south due to some misunderstanding - usually involving the girl seeing their boyfriend holding hands with his ex. She storms off, but if she would have stayed a few seconds longer she would have seen her boyfriend totally reject the ex's come on as he explained to the ex how he was finally willing to settle down with one girl.
The rest of the move is the boyfriend trying to "make up" with the girl. They eventually do and they do it in a way where he doesn't even make the slightest attempt to explain the situation/circumstances behind what the girl saw.

This is more or less a (bad) Japanese anime, but when one character cries over the body of a dead friend and then screams loudly, usually in a zoomed out shot to say "OMG he's in so much pain", I roll my eyes. 6/11/2008 10:04:51 AM |

For the longest time, the Atari 2600 Pac-Man sound was the generic "video game" sound effect until they realized games had advanced well past that era.
Now video game references are either pre-1986 (PacMan, Space Invaders, Mario Bros.) or Grand Theft Auto which an occasional Sonic the Hedgehog reference. It's like 1987-2001 never occurred or something. There are a few exceptions, like Robot Chicken, but that's a TV show.

Canned sound effects. Seems like almost every action movie, most action TV shows, sometimes video games, and occasionally commercial have the same canned sound effects.
The generic "YEAAHAAAAAARH!" when someone dies.
The generic police radio broadcast, which is like "Twenty eight four three nine mumble mumble mumble" that always plays during cop scenes.
I can't figure out if those effects are just free for anybody to use 6/15/2008 6:07:30 PM |
