No, you weren't. As you seem to enjoy links, I'll response in kind.

An concocted issue, designed for propaganda purposes.

The Dangerous Myth of Grade Inflation

I did think she's be so bold as to admit to it, but i do plan on replying to her and telling her that she will be held to a higher standard this semester, and I will be giving her work much more attention throughout. I think I handled this alright.

I think you guys are right though, i probably should've given her a 0 on this one to boot. I'll do that to the next one i catch.

Especially since it was apparently a small assignment and wouldn't have made her fail the course.

By the next one you catch, do you mean the next student? Because it's kind of lame if you treat her one way and another student some other, worse way.

Would you have taken that course of action if the parents hadn't intervened?

That's one of those situations where a teacher's actions should be the same whether or not the parents raise a fuss. Especially when said parents are dumbasses/wrong.

This is why you should have given her a 0 to begin wtih

Does your syllabus include a reiteration of the school's policy on cheating? If not, I bet you're gonna be including one after this

I read the whole thread!

Not being fair is much worse than not sticking to policies. To be fair to others, you should let others also have one chance at this. But that's not a good enough solution as well. Breaking the law is still breaking the law, and it should be punished. If someone escapes punishment in court by mistake/oversight for breaking some law, the rest of the population doesn't get a shot at breaking the law with impunity.

What you should do now (after grading and returning the papers) is announce to the whole class (and by email) that plagiarism is subject to so-and-so punishments, and that no one will get a second chance. Then, you have left no loose ends, and can punish the next person to do it.

You should also do this:

Quote :
"there is a possibility she really doesn't get it. You may want to explain to her what exactly plagiarism means, because it sounds like she thinks that if she does the same thing she did and cites her sources, that's fine."

There are kids all tangled up with student conduct for smoking weed. Cheaters should get the same shit.

I think she would have done differently had the parents not called her the scum of the earth (and many other colorful names) during a meeting ON TOP OF saying would fight the school board until she lost her job over said paper.

Anyone who has taken some classes at a community college should realize that most of the kids aren't going to amount to much. I'd say maybe 20% actually make it to a four year college. A lot of kids there are content to get their Associate's degree and go back to delivering pizza for Domino's. The outcome of this whole situation doesn't matter, this chick is most likely just another community college lifer.

I'm really sorry

At least you got a consolation prize: they're raising a kid who is going to have a really hard time as an adult

You could post an announcement and say something about how you wanted to make clear what plagiarism was and that it obviously was not acceptable on papers in the class. Maybe reference the academic integrity policy for effect. Sort of make it like everyone's warning and let them know if you catch anyone else, then they will receive a 0 on said assignment with possible referral to the higher ups.

GoldenViper quoting me.

If you believe that grade inflation is not an issue, you're a fucking fool and you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. I have been a grader at the college level for a handful of semesters, and I know the pressure is constantly there from many students to give higher grades than deserved.

It even happens at the best schools--and is perhaps more likely there:

Grade inflation spurs Harvard changes
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (AP) -- Harvard University, addressing concerns about grade inflation, is considering restoring a B as the average grade, and clarifying the meaning of each A on transcripts.

Quote :
"The Harvard student-faculty committee, which met this week, also is considering changes in the way honors are earned, including the elimination of the honors track for freshmen and sophomores, and the all-honors majors in some departments.

Last June, a record 91 percent of Harvard seniors graduated with some kind of honor on their diploma, The Boston Globe reported. About half the undergraduate grades last year were A or A-minus."

Quote :
"Most Ivy League and top universities award honors only for outstanding work in a student's major. Some, including Yale and Princeton, cap total honors at about one-third of the graduating class.

One of the proposals being considered at Harvard would encourage professors to give more B grades by narrowing the grade-point gap between an A-minus and a B-plus. Another would include on transcripts the percentage of A grades received by students in a given course."

http://archives.cnn.com/2002/fyi/teachers.ednews/04/19/harvard.grade.inflation.ap/

I could post dozens of examples of this type. About half the undergraduate grades are As? Really?! Doesn't sound very challenging to me--and I don't care how good the students are. And "91 percent" honor graduates? Doesn't sound like much of an honor if just about everybody receives it.
