Great ending to the game. I am excited about the Defense and Offense, but what gives with Peppers? Was he sick or not feeling well, he did not seem to be doing anything in the game.

With Smitty back, we should be able to get the ball in the endzone. Leaving the ball on the 1 yard-line, and 4 field goes will not do it every week. But damn, the offense was so on and the receivers were running good routes and holding on the ball.

I'm Excited.

peppers had one decent hit on rivers just after rivers released it

but i think he should have been able to do more since the guy he was going against is somewhat inexperienced

LJ Shelton is actually very experienced. He was a first round pick and was pretty damn good for Arizona for a lot of years.

Still, wish Peppers would have done more. It didn't help that Rivers magically eludes the rush every damn time.

But go Panthers ... holy shit I still can't believe that actually happened.

That last catch, the pics above were amazing. But yeah, I expect more from our front line in the future.

Much props to Rivs showing some NC State shiznit. If we take the Bears out, we should be well on our way once Smitty gets in the lineup. The DL should be a ton more effective against Bears, I don't foresee the Bears offense being anywhere on the level of Chargers.

"When he saw the ball in Rosario’s hands, Delhomme felt as if he were replicating one of the most famous celebration scenes in sports history.

“I didn’t know what to do. I think I ran around like Jim Valvano,” he said, referring to the late North Carolina State basketball coach’s reaction to the Wolfpack’s upset of Houston in the 1983 national championship game.

“I started to run to go jump on him, and I’m just kind of in awe,” Delhomme said. “Then you hear the ref blowing the whistle, so I’m like, ‘Oh, did something happen?’ But it was for the PAT. … It was just elation.”

"Sorensen: 'Enjoy the heck out of it'
Posted: Sunday, Sep. 07, 2008

In My Opinion

By Tom Sorensen

SAN DIEGO – There’s a reason we buy tickets and jerseys, fight traffic and concession lines and give a team our money and our heart.

You saw that reason at Qualcomm Stadium on a blindingly sunny Sunday afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers flew cross country to a play a team that has as many stars and as much talent as anybody in the NFL. The San Diego Chargers lost one home game the last two seasons combined. They don’t give up yards, " don’t give up points and they certainly don’t give up victories.

Yet the Panthers, the 9 1/2-point underdog Panthers, outplayed them most of the afternoon. The home crowd, which had loved their team wholeheartedly before kickoff, booed them by the end of the first half. Late in the third quarter, they even booed the Chargers for handing the ball to LaDainian Tomlinson, the best running back in the league and one of the best of all time.

The Panthers led 19-10 early in the fourth quarter. Then the Chargers began to play the way they were supposed to, scoring two touchdowns, the last of them with 2:29 remaining for a 24-19 lead.

So the only way Carolina wins is to drive 68 yards for a touchdown. They have 2:27 to do it and they have one timeout.

They move down the field in small steps, never gaining as many as 15 yards. The only voice in the huddle belongs to quarterback Jake Delhomme.

Delhomme, 33, hurt his elbow badly last season and did not play after the third game. He underwent major surgery. This is his first game back.

To say he was relaxed is dishonest. Jake is one of those guys who wake up excited. The alarm went off. Hooray!

But in the huddle there is calm about him. He doesn’t feel as if he has to win this game. He feels as if he gets to.

“We play a kids’ game,” says Delhomme. “Opening day, the crowd, the weather, the national anthem, the flyover -- I was thinking to myself about the people in the stands, and how lucky we are.”

He adds: “I appreciate it. We don’t know how long it will last. Every game could be the last. So just enjoy the heck out of it.”

Delhomme drove the Panthers to the San Diego 20. But only 11 seconds remained. After an incompletion, only six seconds did. Coach John Fox called his last timeout, the one he had wisely saved, and decided to run two plays.

The first was a slant to Muhsin Muhammad for six yards. Muhammad immediately called a timeout.

The ball was on the 14 and two seconds remained. The longest play of the drive had been 13 yards.

“Jake is an amazing quarterback,” says tackle Jordan Gross. “I thought we had a chance.”

The play sent in from the sideline was Five Verticals. The name changes, but anybody who has ever dropped back to pass has called it. The premise is simple: go to the end zone and get open. On three.

Delhomme dropped back, hung in the pocket, hung in the pocket and pump-faked as if he was going to throw.

On the sideline, most of the defensive players sat with their heads down, afraid to look. Cornerback Ken Lucas stood on the sideline, not willing to miss anything. He believed.

Delhomme made eye contact with tight end Dante Rosario, 6-4 and 23 years old. Jake threw hard over the middle, a linebacker got his finger on the ball but Rosario made the catch.

And that was it, touchdown Panthers, game over, Carolina wins 26-24.

If you’re a Carolina fan, you will remember where you were. Fox will. He danced across the field behind dark sunglasses. Players engulfed Rosario next to the blue padding behind the goal post, Rosario’s eye-black mixing with his sweat and running down his face.

Rookie safety Charles Godfrey didn’t know what to do.

“I’ve never been part of anything like this,” he says.

How will you describe your first game to your friends?

“It’s everything that we thought it would be when we were kids,” Godfrey says. “You look at the NFL on TV and it looks like so much fun. And it’s everything that you dreamed about.”

No matter who you are.

^^ Colts have always been inconsistent when stopping the run, I was also surprised since Freeney returned that he didn't get more pressure on Orton. But I think our linebackers are much better as well as our pass rush.

Yeah, totally did not see the Bears looking so dominant. Forte may be the truth. This may be a helluva game.

But I think Panthers D will get more pressure....
