i can't remember what NC has. i think they have some protections if you render aid but i don't remember. at any rate what i do know is that only like a few states...maybe like 4...have good samaritan laws that FORCE you to help. like, if you don't help you're violating the law.

most good samaritan laws say that you CAN help if you want. but once you start helping you can't stop (subject to conditions anyway)

I've never been pepper sprayed...I've been tear gassed, which is, umm, very unpleasant...and I hear pepper spray is like an order of magnitude worse. It would probably stop a lot of assailants, and again, is way better than nothing.

that said, it is not necessarily incapacitating. I know in the USMC, one thing they do in infantry officers' course is to make them run an obstacle course to get them winded, then pepper spray them at the end and make them fight someone (maybe I have some of the details not exactly right, but that's the gist of it)

in the upper levels of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program training, they do something similar...PT you to get you winded, then pepper spray you and make you fight an instructor (or maybe 2, i can't remember...i haven't gotten that far).

so yeah, i hear it sucks something awful, and i can't comment personally because i've yet to be pepper sprayed, but i know that a determined enough attacker can indeed persist despite it (and i am pretty sure that he will not be happy with you).

again, way better than nothing. if cornered, spray him in the face and run like hell. better yet, get your CCP and buy a TASER or a handgun.

yeah I've seen either a youtube clip or Cops episode of a cop pepper spraying a fucking massive escaped prisoner and the guy pretty much just getting pissed and beating the shit out of the cop.

For your close to average person though, they aren't going to be doing much of anything for at least a few seconds after you spray them which is plenty of time to start running in the opposite direction

yup. that is why i got my concealed permit and keep it on me whenever possible. i have no desire to use it--but after seeing my brother attacked and having had a gun pulled on him more than once just because of his size--i've decided people are fucking crazy and i'm not going to be less armed than them

that's just one problem with it.

wind...the fact that it might not stop him...short range...the fact that if you spray him and then he grabs you, it's then all over you, too...

so in the end, it's like taking a self-defense course. just another tool to tilt the odds a little less against you, and to give you a little more opportunity the get the hell out of there.

The biggest outrage i've seen was that hospital in NY in the news a few months ago where the old lady passed out in the emergency room and face planted on the ER floor. There were patients in the room, nurses walking by, even a security peeked in looked, and left. Nobody did anything at all. they watched her keel over, wither, and die.

I remember seeing a video where a cop confronts some huge guy (amateur boxer or wrestler or something). The huge guy attacks, and the cop shot him more than once. It didn't slow the guy down at all. I think he eventually knocked the cop out before backup arrived.

the guy in the video looks like he would be the type to abuse crystal meth, and I've read reports of pepper spray and mace not working on people that are loaded up on crystal meth or PCP. I'd hate for someone to spray a guy in this situation only to find out that it doesn't affect him but it mists back on the sprayer.

I've had indirect pepper spray. It really fucks you up, but in a closed area like that room I could see how someone could grab you and continue to throw blows. Their eyes and nose would probably be pouring tears and snot the whole time and they wouldn't be able to see much, but in a case like the original vid where one person totally dominated the fight he might be able to keep going.

It's probably a pretty good idea in a situation like this though. They at least aren't going to put you in a car and drive you anywhere if you get in a good spray.

Any type of karate learned at a regular gym probably won't help you at all.

Judo, maybe, but even then I don't think anything you would take as a child/teenager/regular adult is going to prepare you correctly to be as aggressive as you need to be.

we had to do a hand to hand combat course after getting sprayed with the military OC spray at my anti-terrorism unit....wasn't a lot of fun, but you can certainly function

2 things:

- As a bystander, you could probably get away with taking a tire iron to the back of that guy's dome. Not a gun...probably not a knife (although possibly), but a I think a tire iron could help you avoid getting in trouble with the law. You can use equal force to what he is using and whatever is reasonable to stop the situation (not excessive). In this instance, if it is reasonable to feel that her life is in danger (and honestly, you could probably win that argument), then you could try and knock him out with a blunt object. It's a tricky situation, but him being so much larger and the degree of the beating...its entirely possible.

- Holy shit that chick can take a beating. People can keep saying the guy is weak (those punches and kicks don't look that weak, and dude is pretty big)...but even so, she took a fucking bashing and was still walking around somewhat coherently.

woman beaters are fucking scumbags. also people who do violent things in front of children. combine the two and you will see my reasoning for saying i definitely would NOT beat the guy if i saw him doing this in public. i'd sure as hell get in between him and the girl, though.

i also don't get why that mom seems to be staying in there with that kid when it seems like they have a clear path out.

also don't get why the cops didn't show up. seems like someone would have to call 911.. and with a violent assault on a woman, i'd expect a cop there in 4 minutes. it doesn't appear to be a rural area. maybe i'll watch it again later and see if there's sound.
