Yeah it sucks that there's no 3rd pedal. But it has the MCT 7 speed with wet clutches. So it's not like you would turn down a Lambo or Ferrari that doesn't have a 3rd pedal either would you?

No, nor would I turn down anything of value I could resale (include an IS-F)...not to mention the cars you mention are typically in a different class than the two being discussed. A class where I would be happy to give up the 3rd pedal, unlike the class being discussed.

I admit that most cars I would not consider without a 3rd pedal. But there are some that I still will, and the AMGs are included in that group. Would I prefer a 3rd pedal? Of course.

I appreciate my wife's LX470. As far as large SUVs go, its as good as it gets. Also, it's third-world / terrorist approved (the platform is, anyway)

So... Lexus sent me a letter in regards to my wife's 2009 IS250.

To sum it up, there was enough carbon buildup in the engine from daily driving to cause premature engine failure. It starts with hesitations and misfires, but the ecu doesn't record it and there's no CEL. Because it's not logged, the only way to get Lexus to warranty this work is to have one of their techs take the car for a spin and experience the same malfunction. It usually happens while the engine is cold and the problem disappears when the engine is warm.

It started to idle rough around 40k miles. At 50k it started having cold soak misfires. 53k, it hiccuped once after coming to a stop during operating temperatures. Engine rebuilt at 55k. There were TSB's posted in the past with regards to "free valve cleaning due to excessive carbon buildup" for those who experience really rough idling, but this was back in 2008/2009. New pistons and rings were installed during the engine rebuild provided by Lexus. So those considering the IS250, I'd suggest either stepping up to the IS350 (motor doesn't suffer from the same failures) or go with another car all together.

^ My wife's IS250 had the same thing - they ended up taking off the intake manifold and cleaning all carbon deposits.. I paid to have it repaired and wrote them a letter. They no joke sent me a check for the repair amount about 7 months ago. I just bought another Lexus today. Such a fanboi.

I can appreciate Lexuses for what they are, and the new IS looks somewhat intriguing, but they haven't made a model that I'd really want to buy since the late 90's (I loved the SC400 and the original GS300 was beautiful if slightly underpowered). Just don't really do it for me.

not to sound like a hipster but i'm fan of the old lexus. they've traded reliability for looks and fun to drive for factor. just bought a 98 ls400 it's like driving a coffin... I love it.

^^^To be fair, I've had a first gen LS400 and it was GREAT car. I wish I still had it. I drove that car to the coast to go fishing almost every weekend last summer and it was perfect for long, quiet trips. If I come across one in the right color I'll pick up another one.

Now I've got a beater manual limited slip IS300. The car is thus far mechanically sound and I bought it from the original owner who purchased it new in Raleigh. It's one of the best cheap cars I've had in a long time. It's quiet, comfortable and fun in curves. It does take a little more effort to keep pointed straight and on center but I'm ok with that. The engine doesn't rev quickly enough, but I plan on replacing the flywheel with a much lighter one with the clutch goes.

I also love the size - I swear its smaller than a Civic coupe I parked by the other day. It's lighter than you'd expect too, yet it has the bullet proof (and heavy) 3.0 2JZ straight six.

^The first-gen IS300 was pretty interesting now that you mentioned it, especially the super-rare wagon version.

Isn't the 2JZ the same engine that the Supra used in turbo form? That could be a fun build (though I'm sure it'd get pricey).

It's definitely not the fastest but I think a different flywheel will help. According to the internet a IS300 with a 5 speed weighs 3,255lbs. It looks like a manual 330i weighs 3,417lbs? A 350z coupe weighs around 3,400lbs.

Plenty of room in the back to me and enough leg room but I also don't have the front seats pushed all the way back as far as they go.
