Yeah, we have a lot of solid guys being red-shirted. Next year or two should be interesting assuming we can stay healthy.

" However, for us, a mid level program, I think it's a bit different. Yes, I'd like to bring in a bunch of 5 stars, but in reality we're going to get a few here and there, but not many. That's just how it is. But look at this years team. A lot of playmakers are the young guys, and guys that TOB recruited that we'd ideally want to redshirt are playing now. And we're redshirting more defensive backs that will be able to play next year, not to mention Glennon, Barnes, and 3 OL. We're going to bring in another solid recruiting class this year. Don't tell me that TOB can't identify talent-- TJ was a 2 star. Matt Ryan was a 3 star.

and also, Jesus Fuck, will you people just lay off TOB and the coaching staff. They are doing as much as they can. but We. Aren't. That. Good. Yet."

I absolutely agree. It will take time for TOB and his staff to build the foundation of the program. Once he gets his own guys in place, in theory we should see the Pack improve to the point that more and more 4 and 5 star recruits come our way. It won't happen overnight, and yes it does call for patience. I knew going into this season that our record would likely not be that pretty...

However...

Quote :
"see, the problem with that argument is that we are never going to be as good as LSU, Florida, Texas, USC, or Georgia. For those elite echelon programs, yes, they need to bring in some stocked recruiting classes."

That kind of thinking really pisses me off.

Did somebody tell South Florida they were never going to be as good as Miami, FSU, and Florida? Did somebody forget to tell Boise State they were never going to make a BCS bowl and beat a national powerhouse? Should we tell David Cutcliffe "Hey, Duke isn't supposed to be good... just quit now and save yourself the trouble"?

There's a huge difference between "being realistic" and "arbitrarily setting limits on success." You're doing the latter. Stop. Stop now. Jimmy V is turning over in his grave after hearing crap like that from a Wolfpack fan.

The ACC is down right now, but that means it's ripe for a new flagship program to emerge. V-Tech is reloading. G-Tech, Duke, and Clemson are starting over with new coaches. Miami and FSU are struggling to figure themselves out. Virginia and Maryland can't decide whether they're good or bad. UNC and BC have new coaches that have shown promise, but proven nothing yet.

Bottom line - A school that's headed in the right direction will have a chance to become the new powerhouse of the conference. There is absolutely no reason to think it can't be NC State.

And don't give me this "we'll never be as good as so-and-so bullshit." Has the last year and a half of college football taught you NOTHING? The playing field has never been more level. The difference between elite and bottom-dweller is razor thin. Just look at the barage of upsets last year and this year. Vandy over Georgia, Oregon State over USC, Pittsburg over West Virginia, App State over Michigan, the list goes on and on...

Chuck Amato, for all his faults, did one very important thing - he made State believe it could be great. Seriously, 10 years ago would anyone have remotely believed NC State would:

1) graduate a now 10-year NFL veteran who started in and won a Super Bowl in his rookie year?
2) graduate one of the great QBs in ACC history, who is now arguably in the top 5 at his position in the NFL?
3) rise to #9 in the country in '03-04?
4) take Ohio State into triple OT... on the road in "The Shoe"?
5) have three 1st round draft picks, including the #1 overall, in the 2006 draft?
6) have the #1 overall defense in the country in '05-06?

Are we bad now? Absolutely. But I will NOT hear any bullshit about NC State "never being ____". Everything is impossible until somebody does it. It was impossible to beat FSU until State routed them in 1998. It was impossible for Wake Forest to be any good until Jim Grobe turned them around and made them a Top 25 program. It was impossible for a two loss team to win the NCAA title until LSU did it last year.

Attention pessimists. GET. THE. FUCK. OUT!!!

Pardon me, let me do a politician esque retraction and backpedal:

I'm not saying we won't be as good as those teams for a small stretch of time, I'm just speaking in terms of the entire scope of the program. If you think we're going to become some perennial powerhouse like those teams that were mentioned, you're fucking insane.

But that's a symptom of being an NC State fan, I know, it happens to the best of us.

And as far as the Jimmy V argument goes, I love his enthusiasm, I love "Don't give up, don't ever give up", I love the cheerleading that that quote lends itself to, but come the fuck on, I'm tired of it being brought up in every situation.

Would I love NCSU to be a top tier team? Of course. But that's a fucking pipedream when looking at it in our current situation.

Rather, I'd like to be a respectable football team that plays hard that, if it performs up to the best of its ability, has the chance to make an ACC title game.

Now, if we get that, then I may revise my long term vision of the program, but that step comes first before anything else.

I don't think its too much to ask to compete in a terrible ACC.

We're not begging for national championships. We're begging our team to learn to tackle.

Also, I told someone last night....that game would have been easier to take if we had just been blown out from the beginning. One thing I'm tired of seeing is this team in position to win, or in great position to make game/season changing plays, and constantly come up short because of fundamental mistakes (tackling). 3rd and 19???

^yeah thats what I mean.

Its easier to take a loss when the other team beats you because they throw 50 yard bombs down the field, bust open huge holes in the offensive line, and dominate you on defense. It hurts, but in a different way. At least you don't waste your energy getting pumped about a possible win. But to put yourself in position 2 weeks in a row only to have fundamentals on D come back to bite you in the dick, its painful to watch.

^, ^^^

I couldn't disagree more. I would rather watch a close game any day than to see a blow out like the USF game. I hate knowing the game is over at half time. I want to have a chance to win at the end of the game even if we don't win. It's much more exciting to watch. It keeps the fans in their seats too..

There is no doubt our tackling and inexperience is an issue, but he certainly isn't putting our players in the best position to succeed most of the time.

I don't think much strategery is involved in a goal line defense. Also, one of the stands gets an asterisk because the wide open duke player tripped on himself.

I didn't see any appreciable improvement out there. Duke just wasnt as good as our previous opponents.

Pass to the side where the corner is giving the 15 yard cushion rather than the 10 yard one
Slant
Seam route over the middle
Screens

Our opponents have many options to choose from.

^^ Yeah, UNC is going to score 60+

We seem to be able to load the box and stop the run when we are focused on *just* that. But on the 4th down play, I'm pretty sure I saw 3 wide open recievers as everyone crashed the line...we got lucky on that one.

^Yeah maybe but at the same time the pressure from the line caused the poor throw.

FYI archer: Good QBs love when you don't put pressure on them.

Defense at the end of the 1st half was rough.

Holding Wake to 3 points in the 2nd half when they had the ball within the 25 twice was pretty awesome. Without RW's fumble, Wake doesn't score in the 2nd half.

In the long run we're gonna need more pressure created by our defensive line to have this defense work. However, I felt like our defense looked pretty good overall in the 2nd half. Nate Irving is amazing.

He definitely sent some blitzers on that final drive. The QB might have had too much time...but it wasn't for lack of effort.

I guess I'll never be pleased with him. Nate Irving is currently doing for Archer what Rivers did for Amato.

It just seems like our defensive strategy is:
Be content with allowing 5-8 yard gains per down and hope we either get lucky or hope that their offense screws up on the first two downs to maybe, maybe get even luckier on a third down. Just let them march 50+ yards on us per possession and hope for the best.

Sorry, nice win. I'm just not quite ready to let a few key holds over the past two games make up for the all the crap.

the reason for this "soft coverage" is because its toward the end of the game, with time ticking away.....you give up the short slants over the middle, and backs running out of flats, because youre taking a chance they will not get the 1st down or run out of bounds, and the clock continues to run or you call timeout....less timeouts, less crossing patterns over middle, resulting it deep outs or comebacks (limits their play selection)

we dont need to be beat deep, and we saw what happened when we blitzed and left 1 on 1, even with safety help, wr for wake just about caught it for td.....

plus, knowing they have to score td was crucial because it was alright for wake to drive it down on us to the 25 yd line or so, so when theres less space, its easier to cover the field, and contain more players, even qb

if wake only needed a fg to tie, im pretty sure we would have played more bump and run with a less lb blitzes and more de stunts, allowing for the lb's to play zones 8-12 yds deep

I don't know how we will fare against UNC on Defense. Not sure how well that will take advantage of our secondary, or whether we will come at them the same way we have the past several games.

I do believe that we will do fairly well against them on Offense though.

We just need to score more points than them.

Man I should work for ESPN.

I think if RW keeps playing like he's playing, and we get a pass rush like we have the last few games, we will beat UNC.
