On another note, Toronto handed out "souvenir mustaches" to everyone in attendance tonight for Wendel Clark night. So awesome as they pan across the crowd and everyone from women to small children are sporting the Clark look.

Fireworks at the Flames/Stars game tonight perhaps?

""I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada," Avery told the media. "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight.""

FUCK the NHL

Quote :
"The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars' forward Sean Avery indefinitely, pending a hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and Avery will not be playing in tonight's game against the Calgary Flames.

Avery is being suspended for disparaging remarks he made this morning in reference to Calgary player Dion Phaneuf and Phaneuf's girl friend Elisha Cuthbert, who previously had a relationship with Avery."

I was going to watch a game I otherwise never would have even known about because of that

phaneuf was gonna get like 31 minutes in penalties at once

4 for charging
2 for instigating
5 for fighting
10 for misconduct
10 for game misconduct

and he was going to earn every minute of them by shattering avery's face

Atlanta just scored 2 goals in 7 seconds.. tying it up in MTL 3-3

Also, Hartnell threw his glove at a TB player going down on a breakaway with 16 seconds left in a tie game, was awarded a penalty shot, but the PS was missed.

seems like a good night for hockey

[Edited on December 2, 2008 at 9:43 PM. Reason : ]

aha and now a EN goal in MTL is the game winning goal.

The funniest reaction that I have heard about Avery is from non-hockey fans who aren't used to professional level leagues holding their players to, you know, professional standards when they are in public and especially in front of a camera. Avery is a clown on the ice, but what he did in front of the media was uncalled for. I do, however, mourn the fact that we missed out on seeing Phaneuf knock Avery into next week and then go home and have victory sex with Elisha Cuthbert.

yea, sean avery is the lowest scum in the nhl

but here's what I really didn't like about what he did....He was in the locker room, and sought out the cameras and gave that little speech, completely premeditated, no one else even brought it up.

His teammates don't seem too enthused either...Turco said "Well hopefully...he doesn't back down...better show up like a man"

There will always be pests in the NHL, and you'll always hate to play against them and love them when they're on your side.

The difference between Avery and someone like Bryan Marchment or Claude Lemieux, however, is that none of the other players like having Avery on their team.

Another great Penguins/Rangers game tonight. Especially nice to see Prucha finally get a goal.

Though it was hilarious that after he scored the goal, the MSG feed went to absolute hell.

THE MULLET returns to ESPN on January 1st.

I guess when he saw Paul Maurice was hired over him he knew he would never be coaching again.

I think we should get Avery to replace him. Given his off the cuff remarks this week, that could make for some great commentary

I would love Avery as a TV analyst. To be honest, yes his antics are ridiculous, but if he ever grows up, he's the person you love to hate. He was perfect when the Rangers played Atlanta in the playoffs 2 years ago.

He's like the Howard Stern show, a lot of people hate him, but they listen to see what he says/does next. The NHL is hurting with this economic crisis (I hope the cap gets cut to be honest) and this kind of publicity, though ridiculous, is a good thing. It gets you press coverage you wouldn't get otherwise. I mean some celebrity news network thing was waiting for his comments after his meeting with Bettman. I mean cmon the NHL needs to get off its horse and attract some fans other than those we already have. It's the best sport to watch in person and I wish we could attract more people to it. There's no reason for it to not succeed. It would if Bettman was gone.

"Radim Vrbata's season with the Tampa Bay Lightning is over.

The free-agent winger, who was signed to a three-year, $9 million free-agent contract in the off-season is apparently heading home to the Czech Republic to finish the season there. The Lightning will apparently not be responsible for paying him for the balance of this season but the contract will remain in force for the second and third years should he choose to return to the NHL.

"Radim is a great guy and he came into our office on Sunday morning and just told us his confidence is low and he would like to head home to the Czech Republic to finish the season,” Lightning owner Oren Koules told TSN. β€œHe just wants to take the rest of the year off (from the NHL) and try to get his game back over there. If he wants to come back next season, great. That's his call. This is all very amicable. He's a great guy who's really struggling right now.”"

When Melrose was asked if that statistic gave him any glee, the former coach was very candid.

I will say one thing about Barry, I hated him years ago (like back when hockey was still played on ESPN), but he was one of the first to say we would win the Stanley Cup the year we did. He called it in like February and maintained his stance the whole time.

That quote made me happy. I think he got a raw deal there, it was almost like he was brought in as a Joker for the King. I don't think he should have coached them, but I don't think he had enough time to do anything really. That team just lacks chemistry which can take time to build.

FWIW, he did bail on us before game 7. He thought they were done after the piss poor performance in game 6 and said Edmonton would win. I've always liked Barry though, he tells it like it is.

Did not know he bailed on us for Game 7, didn't see him talk about that. Only know of leading up to it for months he wanted it. I was at Game 7, so I don't know if he said it that day and didn't hear him talk change of picks before it after Game 6. But yeah, I like Barry's honesty too, not as blunt as Cherry, but still it's good to have someone like him in the media.
