9/11 was not major, in the grand scheme of things.

See, when they ran the flag up half-staff on 9/11 and instituted the pledge daily, I continued to sleep through first period. They thought I was a terrorist because I wouldn't pledge. I tried to explained to them that the terrorists were after our freedoms, while I was only after another hour or two of sleep before lunch. They never really bought it. I didn't care, I got my sleep.

in case shit happens. if we need to, we need to be able to. it's not about the threat right now, it's about the potential threat in the future.

But why would we need to?

We have the power to destroy every Chinese, Russian, or European ship and aircraft, which would pretty much destroy their ability to make war on America.

Why would we need the ability to invade, occupy, or destroy them?

Dude. Seriously. If we even joked about trying to invade any major power the entire fucking planet would see ten thousand years of nuclear winter and in fact I'm not even sure you'd be safe on the ocean floor. Mutually Assured Destruction. It hasn't changed since the 60s. Conventional war doesn't exist anymore, that's why we've been pillaging the third world.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfoQsZa8F1c

Specified for 50 megatons of mutually assured destruction, estimated energy at detonation of approximately 60 megatons, they did not have the balls to push it to the full 100 megaton capacity of the design.

Then China says "we need to make sure we can keep america out, just in case"

then we're like "oh shit, China's doin shit over there, let's go check them out and make sure nothin's goin on"

then somebody will translate wrong and there will be a huge world war.

we need to be able to take out the nukes without setting them off before anyone could do anything about it, just in case.

AN INTERESTING STATISTIC

the yield of Tsar Bomba was roughly 10 times the combined yield of every bomb exploded during WWII, including nuclear

To quote Wikipedia:

"The fireball touched the ground, reached nearly as high as the altitude of the release plane, and was seen and felt almost 1,000 km (621 miles) from ground zero. The heat from the explosion could have caused third degree burns 100 km (62 miles) away from ground zero. The subsequent mushroom cloud was about 64 km (40 miles) high (nearly seven times higher than Mount Everest) and 40 km (25 miles) wide. The explosion could be seen and felt in Finland, even breaking windows there. Atmospheric focusing caused blast damage up to 1,000 km (621 mi) away. The seismic shock created by the detonation was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth. Its Richter magnitude was about 5 to 5.25.

....

Since 50 Mt is 2.1*10^17 joules, the average power produced during the entire fission-fusion process, lasting around 39 nanoseconds, was about 5.4*10^24 watts or 5.4 yottawatts. This is equivalent to approximately 1.4% of the power output of the Sun."

[Edited on October 12, 2008 at 4:21 AM. Reason : In short, our military is irrelevant and wasted dollars.]

Irrelevant

The Tsar Bomba is too large to fit in ICBM's and must be carried by plane.

In a war with Russia, we would shoot down any plane before it left their borders.

Now I know you are joking.

That's why WE have nukes, to take out their nukes.

It would be impossible to do this conventionally.

Tsar Bomba was a propaganda move, yes, but an effective one. They and every other major superpower also have more realistic MIRV warheads that can level a significant fraction of the area of any US state and can be deployed on an ICBM. As far as China and Russia are concerned, thousands of them. So, what's your point exactly?

My point is that the Tsar Bomba, which you have mentioned in 2 posts, is irrelevant.

Besides, if we had no military, we would be the ones being pillaged by major nations.

My point is that it was conceived and executed as a propaganda maneuver to illustrate an extreme, and that apparently flew right the fuck over your head even as I spelled it out for you. They would never realistically deploy it, but the fact that it even fucking existed is terrifying. My hats off to them for having the balls, and shame on you for having no fucking sense at all.

Yeah, the fact that Russia built a useless, over the top weapon is really frightening to me.

"OMG, I heard that China is building an 8,000 ton Main Battle Tank! It's too large to actually be transported out of the country, or really move at all, but Jesus aren't you scared!?"

China recently made advancements equivalent to 30 years of our silicon process research in roughly 6 years. They steal intellectual property from practically every major US company via foreign exchange students. They own most of our debt. They are importing resources that they also have the largest natural reserves of in the world, e.g. copper, steel, coal. I'd give China some props, they are systematically fucking their way to the top and nobody seems to notice or care

^^ OH, you mean like the Japanese had over their mainland?

Or are you implying they'd need a stealth bomber to pull something like that off now?

I am pretty sure Russian jets completely dominate ours as far as performance is concerned, and if you think we have air superiority over their mainland you are in fucking jingo-Uncle-Sam-lala-land.
