Let's be honest here, McCain refused to leave because he knew his developing career in the military (and beyond) would be completely fucked if he did that. Completely. He would have had to go on TV and say that his captors had treated him kindly (lying) and so on and so forth, breaking the POW Code of Conduct. He had already fudged on a lot of information (like they all did) but he knew that crossing this line meant his military career was done. He did what he has always done and what he continues to this day to do, serve his own interests.10/17/2008 12:41:59 PM |

So nutty in fact, that all it took for you was a line or two of rational commentary to dismiss my entire claim. Oh wait, the lulz on you. There are so many stories out in the intarwebs giving many varying accounts about what really happened at the Hilton, that you should at least be a little bit suspect of the story that McCain has told, the story that the MSM has latched on to and not once questioned because they are spineless.
You could do that, research a little bit yourself, but you're just a partisan hack like the rest of us so I don't expect you'll care to try.10/17/2008 1:49:44 PM |

You're telling me a man would rather stay behind and suffer the conditions of the pow camps in north vietnam than go back home to his family, simply because it would be a bad career move? I'm not sure that even the most selfish person i know of would be willing to pull something like that. That's why it is just nutty

I'm not about to do you the favor and copy and paste in all the circumstantial evidence and counterstories to the McCain narrative he painted for HIMSELF. You're not going to do it yourself either, its more fun (or ego self preserving) for you to believe that you are right, and reject anything that questions your belief. There is enough information out there to question the status quo. You can be ignorant or not.
You do pose a good question. The bottom line regarding his release was such that by POW protocol he wasn't the one there the longest and would be violating the protocol (and voiding his burgeoning career) if he volunteered to leave. If he was in fact being tortured to inches of his life (and other POWs were killed from their torture injuries) then he most certainly is a hero of epic proportions. The man somehow has no PTSD from such an brutal period in his life, well except for a little bit of a temper. Truly, a guy that survived all that is a man of honor and to be believed on his word to no end (just ask the Keating 5!)
Here, lets look at a couple of other details about the story. Up fron, we don't know the extent that his injuries were sustained from the crash or from beatings. John McCain is the only one that has told the world these details (aside from the propaganda machine Vietnam captors who said they didn't torture anyone). We do know that he willfully told his captors his father was in charge of the entire Vietnam theater so he could receive treatment. What valor! The VC having their "crown prince" now, most certainly wouldn't have beaten him anywhere near death. He was a great bargaining chip. Secondly, the offer to go early or stay in the Hilton was extended to many of the POWs if they agreed to lie about the US war effort and about how their captors treated them. Many of them refused the offer as well, there was nothing herculean about McCains choice. Something else I find rather curious about the entire situation is why there was no escape attempt by McCain. Other POWs certainly tried, here is a guy that has McCains cake when it comes to being a real hero
http://www.pownetwork.org/bios/d/d059.htm
...that's two escape attempts, and if I am not mistaken, he is more decorated than McCain is.
So, you can choose to believe a mostly unverified story fed to you by a man that changes his position with the wind, womanized and most likely cheated on his first wife, and has been shown to be a corrupt politician, or you can choose to think that there is at least the possibility he just might be out to continue furthering his own self interests yet again. After all, he is a politician. 10/17/2008 3:08:40 PM |

You do see that saying things like that makes you seem like you have an air of superiority that is really unfounded and actually belies whatever point you are trying to make, no?
And I know this is Chit Chat, but you obviously have some pretty strong beliefs. What about people who make educated choices based on all the facts and simply don't think the leadership in this country has been up to par the last 8 years and want to change directions? Are they choking on liberal cock, even though a good deal of them pretty much aren't liberal at all?

Then instead of responding to it by stating/backing up whatever opinion you have you pulled the "I'm in the military and have more respect for this country than you could ever imagine" bullshit...

let me break down your argument:
Quote : | "Up front, we don't know the extent that his injuries were sustained from the crash or from beatings" |
Quote : | "you can choose to believe a mostly unverified story " |
Quote : | "might be out to continue " |
etc, etc....
lots of ambiguity in your 'argument.'
I find it laughable that you speculate as if you have any idea at the types of things that went on inside that hell-hole and I find it ridiculous that you have the balls to say what he 'should have' or should not have done in his situation. its even funnier that you talk to his medical condition resulting from that experience, when there is no way in hell you have any idea what you are talking about. you are even douchier than I previously expected. you should be kissing his and every other honorable veteran of a foreign war's hairy bean bag for their service. instead you just spit out the daily kos talking points and expect people to be impressed.
you know nothing of what you speak of and you are embarrassing yourself. my whole point in this stupid thread is simply that if you put two people up for election with equal qualifications except one has military service in their background, I am voting for that person regardless of party affiliation.

he didn't crash. he got shot down.
the reason he got shot down is because he was on a bombing run when his radar warning receiver (RWR, or "raw gear") went off because he was being targeted, but he delayed taking evasive action to break lock/defeat the missile until it was too late, in an effort to get his bombs on target.10/18/2008 6:47:32 AM |

the mishap rate in those days was not what it is now. the technology wasn't as good, the training wasn't as good at preventing mishaps, and the entire culture, for better or for worse, wasn't as wrapped up in safety.
also, one of those was while he was sitting on deck on the Forrestal. His airplane was struck by a Zuni rocket that another aircraft accidentally (don't know how, exactly) launched.
