There were a TON of trucks there when we got to Eldorado. We were the caravan with 2 trucks loaded down with 4wheelers and 3 jeeps. We had the mildest looking rigs out there. There were some pretty sweet rigs on the trails.

The trails are closed until April I think, but you're more than welcome to come out next time we go. I'll prolly have room for a passenger in the XJ if you wanna roll.

Funny you should mention the spidermonkey thing...I've been calling my jeep "Project Spidermonkey" since I first started, haha

Well, I almost flipped the fucker on a muddy downhill on my way out of the trail. I was honestly teetering and luckily was able to reverse it and get the other 2 wheels back on the ground.

I also did 99% of the work on my jeep myself, which 75% of the stuff I'd never done before (transfer case, sye, rear main seal, etc....so I didnt know if I could trust it or not for a 200+ mile trip, PLUS some moderate wheel action.

This thing's been sitting for 6 years. Hadnt been inspected since 2002, so I had 0 confidence in the durability of this thing.

I was working at my dad's shop (car garage) a few years ago and the customer's bill was $250. She didnt want to pay it, so just gave us the jeep instead. I paid my dad the $250 and parked it out back of the garage for 4 years. Just brought it to Raleigh 2 months ago to start building it up.

I want to go to Uwharrie sometime, but my Jeep is almost entirely stock. Would it be worth it for me to take an '05 TJ on 31" tires, or should I start with something else first?

Man, you could ride pretty much all of the "moderate" trails out there with a basically stock jeep.

One of the guys I was with was in a completely stock TJ on SLICK street tires. He did say he had a 2" lift, but I dont believe it. I'd try it.

Jeeps are lame. except adams...he wheels that shit by braille, much like I do.

I would say I have probably 11-12K in my hunk of shit. Maybe more...but off the top of my head i know of about that much.

and you can do every trail out there like you are. been with multiple people with your setup and less that have a BLAST out there. Dont let anyone tell you that URE is hard and will destroy your shit.

i wheeled every trail at uwharrie(note i didnt say every obstacle) in my cherokee on 30s

take your TJ, youll have a blast, but it probably would be best to go with someone who has been a time or two

Thanks man..... Hope you dont care, i think i am going to steal some cues from your front tubework when i redo mine here in a month or two. i really dig how simple your truck is and the thing works. done any of the rear tubework yet?

a long couple of years for me. started out with a sorry ass stock truck. lots of nights, lots of money, lots of beer, and lots of help from friends. Its never done. Never will be. I will sell it/part it out and build a buggy eventually once it gets too beat to wheel anymore, but ill cross that bridge when i get there.

I may just be able to make it, but I need to check out my rear ball joint, I think its spent and potentially about to break. Would be a first for me, also would be mighty ugly underneath.

anybody been camping out there in mid-July? I'm thinking about taking a trip out there to do some fishing and maybe hit a couple trails. just didn't know if it was unbearably hot at night during mid-July to be sleeping in a tent.

weather.com reports average lows of 68 in mid-July which is bearable. plus I'm hoping that late night dips into Badin Lake will cool things off. maybe its not such a great idea...especially with the kids. maybe better to get into some higher elevation. anyone know of some easy trails further out west with tent camping.

IIRC, a friend of ours has but if you look at that info- only 2 of the trails are open to 4wd, most of it is ATV or bike trails.

^^ yeah i noticed that. i'm not trying to do any crazy 4 wheelin. just wanted to get up on a trail. figured it would be a good mid-morning run up to the summit and have some lunch on the ridge then head back down. I'm running a stock QX4 and my buddy will be in his stock disco and we are gonna have the wife and kids with us. We just wanted to have a reason to put it in 4WD. We'll spend the rest of the day hiking and huntin for waterfalls, swimming holes and trout in the Wilson Creek Gorge.

brown mountain sucks. i imagine it'll feel pretty rad in your stock qx4 though.

and fuck camping in general at any time of year. it's an unfortunate means to an end...
