Bullshit. The BCS has consistently failed, year after year. The only time it really ever gets it "right" is when there are only 2 undefeated teams.

UT definitely got screwed this season by the BCS. They beat OU head to head on a neutral court, but just because OU was able to run up the scoreboard on their last two opponents means that they are more deserving?

^ yes, yes it does, if someone has to go from the three, who has more convincing victories? Someone has to get screwed in the end... if the Big 12 wanted to make a case I would have liked to see a Texas and Oklahoma Big 12 championship.

I wouldn't consider 5 and a half hours of punts and field goals commandeered by two geriatric coaches to be an interesting BCS game.

[Edited on December 7, 2008 at 8:30 PM. Reason : the Auburn - VT game was at least a good defensive struggle. FSU and Penn St. had horrible offenses]

Yeah, but this this bill is being sponsored by two Congressmen, one Democrat and one Republican. The system is unlawful b/c in some years it keeps teams that have a legitimate argument for being able to even compete for a national championship and get all of the money that comes along with it.

So if the ACC likes the system so much then why are John Swofford and the rest of the ACC known as being pro-playoffs in the media? Swofford actually proposed a playoff plan (top 4 teams) last year.

Quote :
"Slive, an advocate of an expanded postseason since undefeated Auburn was left out of the 2004 title game, presented the model to the commissioners. In the end, only he and Swofford were in favor of bringing the idea back to discuss with their conference presidents when they meet later this spring."

The ACC hates the current system b/c if they actually have a great team they will probably be left out b/c of the perception that the ACC sucks. The ACC schools would love a playoff. It would actually give them a shot at winning a national championship rather than being left out in the cold.

Quote :
"BCS coordinator, and ACC Commissioner John Swofford responded to a stepped-up playoff push by Barack Obama that was broadcast on CBS' 60 Minutes on Sunday.

WHAT SWOFFORD SAID

"First of all I want to congratulate newly elected President Obama and I am glad he has a passion for college football like so many other Americans. For now, our constituencies—and I know he understands constituencies—have settled on the current BCS system, which the majority believe is the best system yet to determine a national champion while also maintaining the college football regular season as the best and most meaningful in sports. We certainly respect the opinions of President-Elect Obama and welcome dialogue on what's best for college football.""

If a playoff system existed the ACC and Big East conferences would be out at least $17,000,000 in revenue this year. I think Swofford realizes that fact.

Not to say the President's of the FBS school's will change their minds in the future, but as I have stated several times previously in this thread, it's not gonna happen any time soon.

Quote :
"We have playoffs in other sports to determine who the best team in the country is. That's how we found out that the Giants were the best team in the NFL last year and the Phillies were the best team in the MLB this year.

Right?"

It depends on how the playoffs are set up. A playoff system set up like the BCS bowls would work in the ACCs favor. Just set it up like the BCS bowls, with the BCS conference champs automatically having a spot, then have the two best teams from the remaining conferences. So if you want to be the national champ, you have to win your conference. None of this computer, voting, stat shit, which is the problem in the first place.

That's all political talk by Swoff to basically say "hey Obama stick to what you know best, but if you want to discuss with us behind closed doors then bring it on". Swoff and the SEC guy proposed the plan for a +1 system just last year. Trust me Swoff and most of the ACC want a playoff, preferably a true playoff. Take this year as an example of why they would want a true playoff with conference champions getting automatic bids. The league champion and none of the other teams have a shot at the national title, but if they conference champions got an automatic bid then they would at least have a shot at it. The money currently in the BCS Bowls would most likely be allocated back through to the teams that play in each playoff game.

^^, ^So you're saying VT is more deserving of a spot in the hypothetical playoffs than Texas Tech because they won their conference this year?

I mean I guess you could give them an at large bid, but you'd still piss off Utah, tOSU, and others... Then you'd have to change the rules regarding 3 teams in the BCS, yada yada

Quote :
"“After a very thorough, very good discussion among the group, we have decided that because we feel like at this point in time the B.C.S. is in an unprecedented state of health,” Swofford said. “We feel like it has never been healthier in its first decade. I would describe it as an excellent conversation and having made a decision to move forward in the next cycle in the current format.”"

That was after he proposed it in 2007.... He said they won't change the current system until at least 2015.

Well he has to say the right things. I didn't say VT is more deserving than TT, no way would I say that. I simply said that most of the ACC would like a playoff where conference champions get automatic bids.

Man I was really hoping for this(although I know would never happen). Boise is a ton of fun to watch, and I'd rather see them lose by 50 and run trick plays then ever watch OSU play football, it is so painful to watch.

And I know it is easy to just say, "Boise schedule harder teams!" But I'd venture to say that they are probably trying, and I'd bet there aren't a lot of teams out there that are wanting to play them. I mean, if you win it is the typical "your a BCS big school you should win" and if you lose its the huge upset and you'll never recover from it all season. Why take the chance, just go play Youngstown state, roll through your conference, and come out 10-2/11-1 and count your cash in a BCS game.

It is the complete opposite of basketball, where teams try to make their schedule tough and pick up key wins even if it means you lose a few. Just can't risk it in football.

and even if there was an 8 team playoff ... you still wouldnt be able to risk playing a boise or similar level program since you have to stay in the top 8.

An 8 team playoff would be nice, but a 16 team playoff would be very fair, plus you'd still have to have a strong schedule to make it into the tournament if you perhaps slipped up in your conference championship game. 6 automatic bids for BCS conference champions, and 10 at-large bids for the best of the rest. Then you would definitely have Boise and Utah in there, along with other great teams like Alabama, Texas Tech and Texas.

A 16 team playoff would have had these teams playing:

Automatic bids
Oklahoma - Big XII Champion, 12-1
Florida - SEC Champion, 12-1
USC - Pac 10 Champion, 11-1
PSU - Big Ten Champion, 11-1
Cincinnati - Big East Champion, 11-2
VT - ACC Champion, 9-4

At-large bids
Texas - #3 in the BCS, Big XII South Co-Champion, 11-1
Alabama - #4 in the BCS, SEC West Champion, 11-1
Utah - #6 in the BCS, Mountain West Champion, 12-0
Texas Tech - #7 in the BCS, Big XII South Co-Champion, 11-1
Boise State - #9 in the BCS, WAC Champion, 12-0
Ohio State - #10 in the BCS, Co-Big Ten Champion, 10-2
TCU - #11 in the BCS, 10-2
Oklahoma State - #13 in the BCS, 9-3
Georgia Tech - #14 in the BCS, 9-3 (GT is a prime example of a team that like UGA last year, was perhaps playing the best football of anyone in their conference and the country at this time and could do some major damage in a tournament)
Georgia - #15 in the BCS, 9-3

After simulating with my custom rankings...

1st round

Left side of the bracket

1) OU
16) VT

8) PSU
9) Boise

5) USC
12) Cincy

4) Bama
13) Ok State

Right side of the bracket

3) Texas
14) GT

11) TCU <--- upset! (rankings wise)
6) Utah

7) TT
10) tOSU

2) UF
15) UGA

2nd round

Left side of the bracket

1) OU
8) PSU

4) Bama
5) USC

Right side of the bracket

11) TCU <--- upset!
3) Texas

2) UF
7) TT

Semifinals

1) OU
4) Bama

2) UF
11) TCU

Championship

2) UF
1) OU

Apparently this time the tournament simulator gave the same two teams that will play for the championship and they had a 50/50 chance of winning.

16 team playoff would ruin the sport. period

Conference Championship game would be a uneventful since most likely both teams get into the tourney regardless if they won or lost. Also you would strip a lot of the specialness from rivalry games. Rivalry games are the greatest when both teams season's depend upon a win. A post season tourney takes away some of that desire to win every regular season game.

College football has the best regular season of all sports. It also has a great post season in most respects. Although, it has failed to give us a uncontested National Champion every year. I think this can be easily fixed with a +1 system. An extra bowl game would solve the biggest problem with the current BCS. Of course it still won't be perfect but neither will any 8+ team playoff you can devise.

Quote :
""We have playoffs in other sports to determine who the best team in the country is. That's how we found out that the Giants were the best team in the NFL last year and the Phillies were the best team in the MLB this year.

I like the bowl system, we get to see the best teams go head to head each year. The most interesting and followed teams get priority and teams no one cares about get the shaft.

If you want to watch cinderella win a NC, wait till March. I want to watch the best teams go head to head, thats what the BCS gives us.

but HOW can you be sure who the best teams are without a playoff??

and that simulation REALLY likes TCU and BYU, its put them both as national champions(both times had them in the national champ game) in 2 of my 3 and they were a BCS ranking , ESPN ranking and my other was custom with a OU OkSU championship game

just shows how crazy of a time that would be
