^ I'd take Brees over guys like RW, Stafford, Alex Smith, and Ryan 11/16/2014 5:03:10 PM |

We all know how talented Wilson was in college, but he's basically asked to hand it off to Lynch. That's why he puts up relatively pedestrian numbers. Sure he is probably a top-5 rushing QB but that should be an element of a QB's repertoire, not his main strength.
And Brees is in the 2nd tier, if not the 1st. I know the Saints have struggled this year, but the guy has thrown for 5,000+ yards 3 times. That's not just "decent" 11/16/2014 5:04:03 PM |

Brees is still in that 5-7 range

top-5 of all time? if you meant currently, I'd ask you to please name the 4 QBs who are better rushers

Yeah Brees isn't having his best year (and he's still having a good year just not as prolific as previous seasons)...but he's a top 6 QB for sure. Maybe even higher

Currently
He's in the same mix of good rushing QBs as Kaepernick, RG3, Vick, Newton, etc. Don't see what the controversy is. Are you saying he's by far the best rushing QB right now? I'd argue other guys could rush for 100 in a game like RW and Cam did this year, but they're not asked to do that, nor should they be.

Brees is a product of Payton and the dome 11/16/2014 5:08:03 PM |

Was Rivers ever given an offer to leave the Chargers for a team that with him at QB may have had a shot at a Super Bowl run? 11/16/2014 5:10:25 PM |

Brees was actually pretty good in San Diego if I'm not mistaken too before he was IRed 11/16/2014 5:10:44 PM |

Sorry, but Brees has been little more than a stat whore the last couple of seasons. He's had more than a couple of games this year we he personally has looked bad. The lost to TB was a bad game, the loss to Detroit he looked bad, against Cleveland he looked borderline bad, and both last week and this week he looked ordinary.
I'm not saying he's terrible, but he's looked pretty pedestrian. In fact, if he wasn't passing 40+ times per game his numbers would look pretty ordinary and we wouldn't be talking about him as a top 10 guy.
He's started to drop off, even if the numbers don't immediately reflect it, he's started to decline as a player. 11/16/2014 5:11:57 PM |

^How can you say that about Brees but not say the same thing about Manning or Brady or Luck who also throw that much?
^^He was good in San Diego too. But he had some guy named Ladainian Tomlinson who Marty wanted him to hand the ball off to, so he "only" threw for about 3500 a year] 11/16/2014 5:13:08 PM |

Yeah Brees was definitely good in SD too. He's been better in NO for sure. But let's not act like he's just a "system QB" or anything like that. 11/16/2014 5:13:14 PM |

I wouldn't put Cam in the conversation for top-5 current running QBs. each of Cam's rushing stats have essentially gone down each year since his rookie season. total yards. yards per carry. yards per game. rushing TDs. first downs.
interestingly his carries per game have stayed the same. 11/16/2014 5:15:49 PM |

sounds like we need some advanced stats that account for these kinda things up in here11/16/2014 5:18:05 PM |

Well, partly because they're doing it on winning teams, but also because they're putting up much better numbers in similar attempts. The TD number jumps out at you pretty clearly. We all know Brees has been very good, but he's just not the same player this season.
I mean, he's 12thi in yards per attempt before today. He's still very accurate, but he's not the same player he once was. Not having Sproles anymore is something that probably accounts for some of the Saints diminished offensive success, but Brees is having a down year too.
Think back to 3 seasons ago, Brees was surgical. He moved that offense up and down the field at will and they were untouchable at home. Now...

I'll agree that Brees isn't as good as he was. He's having a somewhat down season for his normal numbers. Even so, I think he's ahead of RW, Stafford, Alex Smith 11/16/2014 5:27:57 PM |

Colston is getting old, Graham hasn't had a great year, as good as younger guys like Stills and Cooks are, I'm not sure they have the chemistry that Brees had with guys like Devery Henderson and Lance Moore yet. I also think sometimes Payton's playcalling HURTS him, as a lot of times he refuses to call running plays. Of course when he does call running plays, we see Mark Ingram actually looking like a good former Bama NFL RB, and the Saints win. Then they go back to a pass heavy offense and struggle. 11/16/2014 5:30:19 PM |

^^Yeah, I guess. You can probably talk me into putting him with Romo in that second tier, but he's clearly a step below the Brady, Rodgers, Manning, Luck group.
I have a feeling he's going to keep on looking like this the rest of the year though, just don't see him turning a corner and looking elite again.
