"Well, Bridget, it's official, you're insane. So you're pretty much okay with tossing aside the ideas of free will, personal responsibility, causality, and consequences? I guess that's... interesting.

"

I don't see how you got this from what she said. If anything, her view emphasizes the prevalence of forces like causality and consequence, and meters the effect of free will. Personal responsibility is a different, more nebulous, issue.

Plus, I think she was more specifically talking about her view of individuals on a daily basis. You can sit back and say "most welfare people are XXX" but if you actually meet someone on welfare, and you carry this idea around in your head, you might end up prejudicing your view of that person. It's better to just assume that you have no idea why and how someone got to where they are, which is actually the reality of things, and just treat people like people, don't try to blame them without actually having something to blame them for.

"And you're right, you can believe in causality and consequences without believing in free will, but it's mighty silly because then you should just throw your hands up and resign yourself to whatever, after all you have no control or say over anything that happens so what's the point of even continuing to live?"

I don't have the same reaction. The appeal of free will mostly eludes me. I what do I do because of who I am. Who I am comes from the experiences I've had and the double helices in my cells. Why should this make me throw up my hands in despair?

"You may not consider the definition accurate and useful, but you're seriously the only person I've ever met who, when talking about people, society and welfare, would use a definition of self-sufficiency that would make even the Amish look like leeches on the societal teat."

Only if you ascribe value to your notion of self-sufficiency. I see nothing so wrong with relying on other people and machines, though I wouldn't mind being truly able to fend for myself. The idea of contributing or pulling one's own weight strike me as more suited to this debate.

Even if you use contributing or pulling your own weight as the definition, welfare leeches don't qualify.

Uh, yes, that's what I was getting at. Use that narrative to criticize the hated food stampers, not imagined differences in self-sufficiency.

"IOW, youre blaming me for YOUR inaccurate portrayal of your own point? "
LOL, There was nothing inaccurate about it. I said "rich" and it was obvious that I meant "with lots of money". You suggested that when I referred to rich people with a hummer and a car, that said rich people were in debt for both and therefore not rich. But I said "rich" -- "rich" means "with money" not "in debt". Plus, the point I was making only fits with the proper definition of "rich, -- the one I used. You introduced an inaccurate interpretation of "rich" simply to attempt to poke holes in my point, and troll me. You are the one that suggested that by "rich" I really meant "in debt". Why would I mean that? If I had meant that, I would've said it. Plus, it doesn't fit the point I was making, so again, why would I? If I had, it would have been inaccurate. But I didn't. I used the proper concept. It wasn't inaccurate. You have been the only one that introduced anything inaccurate about it. You are a stupid fucking troll.

Exactly. She nuts. And when she realized that I recognize those ideas and acknowledge them as reality, she told me that she'd be ignoring me. LOL. A complete idiot ignoring logic and reality. Makes sense.
