"i went to a restaurant/bar in Hoboken, NJ over christmas, and 3 of us were drinking beer while one of us was drinking cola. (not coke, not pepsi)

the waitress kept bringing more colas out and did not say anything about charging for them, and by the time she left, there was a 2 dollar charge for each one. I refused to pay that part of the tab, and i didn't leave a tip because the waitress did not inform us, and the service lacked in a couple other areas. "

i think that would have made me mad too. the soda drinker was obviously the DD. a good waitress, in my opinion, would not have charged for the sodas... or at least not for refills.

"o since I've never seen a place charge less than $0.24 a glass (usually $0.99 -$ 2.50) how again exactly does the restaurant loose money on drinks? you would have to drink 4+ to even start cutting their profit..."

Joe, that's the cost of the syrup to the company. As I said, that doesn't take into account ANY of the other costs that are factored into the price. If they were just trying to make their money based off of the syrup, their cost would be $0.24. As i said, most companies would IDEALLY get 10% cost on beverages, would translate to $2.40 per glass. That is absolutely not the cost that they are basing their prices off of, and they normally make much less per glass than a 10% cost.

So be it. I am someone whose life is food and more importantly flavor. If I have a problem with people drinking generally flavor-inhibiting beverages while eating, then that is my prerogative and I have to deal with that. Drinks like Diet Coke particularly irritate me because artificial sweeteners saturate your taste buds and outright change the flavors that you are tasting.

If you don't want to drink alcohol and don't want to offend my sensibilities, drink water. It carries little to no inherent flavors and doesn't sully the food.

If i wanted to do something that people would end up changing my hard work to their own devices, i would not cook for a living.

barely read the thread

but mawle has his head up his ass.

first off, you make a profit on the average soft drink order, even with free refills. second off, even if you don't, it's like a loss-leader.

[Edited on March 14, 2009 at 2:38 AM. Reason : unless if course you have no idea how to run a restaurant]

I wouldn't think of a soda as a loss-leader, as it is not offered at its low price to entice people to buy things they otherwise wouldn't have. Sodas are just accepted by restaurants to be something you aren't going to make your money off of. McDonald's and the like make plenty of money off of sodas because they are almost guaranteed to not have anyone refill more than once, with a high majority of their business coming from drive-thru which has zero chance of refills.

Places that aren't fast food are taking a bigger chance at a loss from sodas because you have customers that are generally going to sit there for an hour or more and drink much more.

But you know, you all can believe whatever you want to about my attitude or level of knowledge. I originally just intended to say that the cost of sodas is not as negligible as so many people like to assume. It is not something that the average restaurant (not fast food joint) makes much, if any, money off of.

Therefore, it is not unreasonable for me to see that a place might charge by the glass. I do, however, think it to be wholly unreasonable for someone to get so bent out of shape about having to pay for two Diet Cokes that they suggest compiling a list of places that commit such an atrocity so that they can avoid them.

It's childish. I am willing to bet that I make less money than most of the employed population of TWW and I don't lose my shit over $5. If I go out to spend money on having a nice meal, then I am willing to pay for whatever I consume.

Two of you have said that, a few people have actually agreed with me as well.

The majority of people that disagreed with me have pulled this "How do they not go bankrupt if they are losing money on sodas?" bullshit. They simply have expressed that they aren't paying attention to what i am saying. They say that only alcohol has a higher profit margin, yet I was making $12 on chicken earlier this week as opposed to making maybe $1 on any given soft drink (assuming they got no refills). They might lose money on sodas because they A) can't really make much money on them without charging enough that people will think they have lost their minds and B) will just make up any loss on the other things that they sell, such as alcohol and food.

what i don't understand is how someone who criticizes soda for being empty calories and having an overpowering taste is saying that people should drink alcohol or tea

um, hello taste and empty calories. did you mean water?

Technically speaking, tea has zero calories as long as it's unsweetened

While I did mention it, I wasn't really criticizing soda for being empty calories -- I was criticizing soda for being a bad beverage to go with certain meals. While it is true that its only nutrient value is empty calories (unless you get that vitamin soda, lol,) it's still a great beverage for other uses: a drink mixer, a frozen dessert mixer, a novelty beverage, or a source of caffeine.

Alcohol and tea are different because most have tannins that generally go well with savory foods (meals). Of course, if they're too sweet and/or don't have tannins, then they're usually just as bad as sodas for going with certain meals. Also, the taste of wine pretty much evolved to flavor bland food before sugar and spices were available, so it should be no surprise that it's often served with meals. It's the "earthy" tannins in some liquors, and most wines and beers that make them a far more appropriate accompaniment for most meals than sweet soda.
