MVPs in their prime years don't lose arbitration hearings. It's not a bad deal, just a strange one. Seems like he could have done much better.

They're boys!!
And it's not even the money that makes it a weird deal, it's the length. How many reigning MVPs going into their age 30 season sign a two-year deal? I get that he's a special case -- I mean how many MVPs are still going to be arbitration-eligible at 31 -- but he's setting himself up for a string of short-term, below-value contracts if he doesn't continue performing at an absurdly high level.
$12 or $13m per would be fine on a four or five-year deal, just not on a two-year deal.

Logically devoid? Dude is short-sighted as fuck. $24 mil is enough to live out the remaining 50 years of your life pretty comfortably, but there's no doubt this is going to go from a strange deal to a bad deal if Hamilton is too banged up in two years to get any decent deals on the free agent market. There's nothing wrong with cnutz being STOKED about his BOY getting paiddddd, but the failure in logic here comes from him denying this deal could have been markedly better.

I've read Mickey Mantle's autobiography probably six or seven times. He never mentions anything about getting loaded and beating the shit out of his wife.

They only asked for ~13m for arbitration so it's not like he lost a lot of money. The two year contract just takes him to the end of his arbitration so I don't exactly understand how he did anything wrong. 2/10/2011 8:52:39 PM |

If his agent wasn't looking for more than two years, and if they really were only going to ask for $12m in arbitration, he has a shitty agent.
Quote : | "but he could have gotten so much more!!!" |
Thank you for agreeing with me.

Michael Young (age 34, career OPS+ 105) and Adrian Beltre (32, 108) are both making more than Hamilton (30, 137) over the next two years. He basically signed the same deal as Votto, but with one less year. It's a contract that makes sense for the Reds and Votto because he's just now hitting his prime and should get a huge payday when he hits free agency (unless he hires Hamilton's agent). The only winner here is the Rangers. I guess they were running low after giving such a huge deal to Beltre, who is massively over-valued.
And really, if there was no chance at a long-term deal, not going to arbitration was just retarded. He's going to win $12m no problem, probably could have got as much as $14m. Put up anything better than replacement-level numbers this year, and he's looking at $16m in arbitration next year. And that's when you have the real pressure on the team to work out a multi-year contract to save value.
Massive fail all around for Hamilton. Epic win for the Rangers. Maybe Ron Washington will share a few lines in the clubhouse to make up for it.

Oh man, this gets even better
Quote : | "Hamilton earns $7.25MM in 2011, $13.75MM in 2012 and a $3MM signing bonus, " |
$10.25m this year, when he was guaranteed $12m through arbitration, $13.75m next year when (if healthy) he's again guaranteed more through arbitration.
This says exactly one thing: neither Hamilton nor the Rangers are confident in his ability to suit up for all 162 games next year or beyond. Dude is one of the top five-tool players in the game when healthy and he's making less than Milton "I hit .205" Bradley, less than Jason six-home-runs Bay, less than Carlos "my legs don't work" Beltran, less than Gary "I had one good year in 10+ seasons" Matthews, less than Alfonso way-the-hell-past-his-prime Soriano, less than Carlos "I was in AAA last year" Zambrano, less than "what's Japanese for 'bad contract'" Fukudome, less than Kyle "my arm doesn't work anymore" Lohse.
You know what pretty much all of those guys (and dozens more) have in common? At one time they were worth $12m+ and they signed deals that protected them through and after their primes.
It's cool that you think Hamilton 'doesn't care about money', and maybe he doesn't, but he already makes a lot of it. He doesn't live a $50k lifestyle, he lives a $3m lifestyle, soon to be a $12m lifestyle. And that well is going to run dry quick when he's signing shitty free agent deals in a few years.
It doesn't matter that he's simply making more next year compared to this year -- any person in any profession should be paid fair value for their service, and he's not. I don't know what you do, but I'll assume that you absolutely love it. You honestly would take a 25% cut simply because you like your job? With a pretty good chance that you'll be taking a 1200% cut in two years? It's foolish not to get the long-term deal when time is right, and it's probably even more foolish to not at least take arbitration and set your self up for a higher cash grab and an even better chance at a a long-term deal next year.
Stop slurping him for a second and look at it rationally.]2/11/2011 2:04:00 PM |

^^ what should we call it?
^ they don't really live an extravagant lifestyle. he drives a chevrolet truck and his wife drives an escalade. they rent a house in texas. they own a house (that he bought with his original signing bonus) and condo here (that his wife owned before he went pro). oh wait, i just thought about something. They have a housekeeper. That may put them in to the $3m lifestyle.
I know you know a lot because you use the internet but I don't think you know all the reasons of why they made this deal. Its not because he cant stay of the "white pony."

I don't care why he made the deal (I know as much about why he did it as you do: zilch. The difference being that I don't pretend like I know what he's thinking.), I just care that it's an undeniably bad idea. Hamilton, as much as anyone, should know to expect the unexpected, and should have got paid while people are willing to pay him.
