I just want to point out that Boone made bars go smoke-free last year, but then let them go back to allowing smoking when the revenue bottomed out.

This is what I'm talking about. I'd probably be a bit more irked if the smokers didn't act like every bar was their sanctuary and every non smoker just had to fuck off. If they (and the owners) were making provisions for the smokers to get their cancer the hell out, I'd be a lot more outraged about laws like this. But as it is, with smokers not giving a fuck or having any sort of a common courtesy to take their filthy habit outside, I'm fine with the government nudging them.

woah woah woah woah

smokers oughta be courteous enough to go smoke outside?

i'm sorry, but back when i smoked, the whole appeal of a bar was that i could go smoke inside.

seriously, going to a bar you know is going to be smoky and bitching about it is like going to an indian place and bitching because it reeks of curry.

I think you'll see a combination of the following:

- bars that go completely smoke-free
- bars that become private clubs, charge you a $0.50 cover on your tab or something, and allow smoking
- bars that ban smoking until maybe 10pm or 11pm, then allow smoking

^I would assume so

actually going in a bar and complaining about the smell of alcohol is the same thing as going in an indian restaurant and complaining about the smell of curry.

since curry is what restaurants sell. bars don't sell cigarettes.

a better comparison would be smoke:bar... and... well... smoke:indian restaurant

I bet there will be a "strange odor" in bars that you didn't notice before.

So, it is the government's role to enforce "common" courtesy? Okay, every goddamn baby in a bar or restaurant needs to be removed. Also, every BO stinking asshole that comes into a place of business needs to be escorted from the building by a G-man in dark sunglasses. If thats the way we are gonna play it, let's all be completely fair about this. If anything offends anyone for any reason, it should be banned by big daddy government.

I don't give a fuck if you don't like it. I love it.

Bars do sell cigarettes.

Well, you're the worst kind of american. Good job ignoring history and morality and instead adopting a view where it's acceptable for popular majorities to trample the rights of unpopular minorities.

does the smell of curry make you sick? probably not. but if it did, would you go to an indian plac. i would hope not. and if you did anyhow, then what the fuck is wrong with you?

if bars thought they would pull in more revenue by being nonsmoking, i promise you that they would have banned it a long time ago.

People that claim to smell smoke after walking past smokers are typically over reacting. Its a mental thing. One more thing for them to complain about.

there already are "non-smoking" bars.

if it was that big of a deal in the first place, most of you that are praising the gubment would have already been actively seeking out said "non-smoking" bars and patronizing them.

from what i can gather from this thread, you don't want to be inconvenienced so you go to a bar that allows smoking, and then complain about the smoking.

and you call the smokers whiners

you have been conditioned by hours of "DARE" elementary-school training and "TRUTH" TV commercials to believe that smoking is a yucky, nasty smelling habit (no one smokes because it is healthy, so they had to attack the idea that smoking was "cool"). The sad thing is that if you were born 50 years ago, you would have the opposite opinion because smoking was the norm (note: i am not talking the objective health impacts of smoking, but the subjective perception that cigarette smoke "smells bad").

Welcome to the world of the weak willed masses. Population: You.

Absolutely not. One of the cornerstones of our Republic is the concept that even the minority has rights that are protected, often to the displeasure of the majority.

i live in maryland and we just went through a state wide smoking ban a couple years ago. everyone made a big deal about it (just like this thread) before it went into effect but the transition was very smooth and easy. now, its just normal to go outside and smoke it you want to, and no one thinks twice about it. business was not impacted. north carolina won't be any different.
