http://blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/canes-sign-jokinen-to-2-year-deal
Took a pay cut to sign, I love this guy.(You watchin this Cole????)
We were supposed to have all of our RFAs offered by 5pm today, as of noon, none had been tendered. Maybe they were hammering out contracts.

FINALLY Rutherford starts making some sense when it comes to cole.

i'll be shocked if there is a team out there willing to pay cole (significantly) more than whatever Rutherford offered. the dude is just not a top line forward anymore.
and yeah, larose is the priority now.

There is ALWAYS a team out there willing to pay. I wouldn't be surprised if Cole and LaRose are both gone, but I am still hoping that JR has something up his sleeve for LaRose before the day is over. Either way, once they make it to tomorrow, they are gone. 6/30/2009 1:06:58 PM |

No real surprise on Cole at this point. I like the guy but I won't miss him if he signs with another team for some stupid crazy amount.
Plz to sign Larose though. 6/30/2009 1:15:07 PM |

I want LaRose to come back, but I am fully prepared to move on at this point. It's not looking that good unless he wants to show some loyalty and play at a discount to stay around here. He has ties to Karmanos if I'm not mistaken, and we picked him up undrafted. It's possible, the cost of living around here has to be leaps and bounds cheaper than most places in the NHL.
The only thing that will really piss me off is if he ends up in Florida, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, or Washington. If he signs with any of those teams, I will be reminding him the exact location he can kiss my ass during his 3 visits to the RBC Center and any road trips I take to those venues. 6/30/2009 1:53:32 PM |

I'd like to know exactly how much or how "little" Cole was offered. It's pretty bad when the announcers on VS say things like "Cole needs the help of a sherpa to find the back of the net" during the playoffs, but it was 100% true
If he isn't willing to deal a little bit after a fizzle like that he needs to take a hike 6/30/2009 2:49:21 PM |

Cole and LaRose are gone
http://www.wralsportsfan.com/hurricanes/story/5476597/
Quote : | "Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford said Tuesday night that free agents Chad LaRose and Erik Cole will test the free agent market and expressed disappointment they hadn't signed with Carolina.
Reached by WRAL Tuesday night, Rutherford says he had been negotiating with agents into Tuesday evening in hopes of signing them before free agency begins Wednesday.
Rutherford, reached moments after hanging up from one of the player's agents, expressed disappointment that both Cole and LaRose had shown interest in staying with Carolina but didn't sign.
He said he offered LaRose a three-year contract and Cole a two-year deal but did not give terms.
Rutherford says the Hurricanes had hoped to lock in both players before the free agency period opened up, but with LaRose and Cole now preparing to test the market the Hurricanes are now preparing to become buyers themselves.
"We'll do the same thing the players are doing," Rutherford said.
Cole made $4 million last season, while LaRose's salary was $875 thousand." |

Stolen from steviewonder before he could post it here:
Quote : | ""Erik is working hard to work with us," Rutherford said. "He'll still go into free agency but has said he will not stay out there long if he does not see a big deal he can get.
"I don't think we're far apart with Erik. We've had several good conversations in the last 24 hours in Erik's case. I see his point of view. He's willing to take a pay cut but wants to see if there's a big deal out there. There's not the same frustration with Erik."
LaRose is coming off a career season in which he scored 19 goals. He was paid $875,000 last season and may be able to secure a better deal on the open market than Carolina has offered.
"I'd like to sign both," Rutherford said. "My position has changed. I only have so much (money) to do it. If we can do it within those numbers, we'll do it."
Another negotiating snag also has developed. Defenseman Anton Babchuk, a restricted free agent, was given a qualifying offer of $1 million — the same salary as last season — and Rutherford said Babchuk has said he will not play for the qualifier.
Babchuk has no arbitration rights. He could return to Russia to play hockey. Another option could be the Canes trading him.
"We have an issue with Babchuk," Rutherford said. " |
Babchuk shouldn't play for the qualifier. I don't care how bad he was in the playoffs, no defenseman who scores 16 goals is gonna sign a $1 million deal.
