everyone should look through their old cards. any of us who were in middle/elementary school when MTG came out and we fucked around with it should dig our old stuff out and see what we have. A spare Black Lotus hiding in the closet will net you $800, and that's just one of many.

haha I'm pretty sure people would remember if they had a Black Lotus or not without having to sift

Didn't one in excellent condition just sell for like $27,000?

I have a shit ton of these things from 3rd and 4th series I think. Can't remember what my most valuable card was but I know I didn't have any alpha or betas and certainly not a black lotus. Any good cards from the 3rd or 4th series I should look for?

I have every card on the first page under the view legends set.

Didnt realize the tabernacle was worth over $700.

Bout 10cards short of a complete legends set. Have all the rares i believe. Also have a bunch of beta, unlimited etc.

They have been collecting dust for a long time.

bump, somehow seeing the starter kit at barnes and noble piqued my interest and not just for nostalgia purposes; I actually am mature enough to use strategy and stuff now as opposed to when I was a kid, problem is I don't remember if this was really a serious strategy game; I don't want to waste my money on something kiddie, guess I could go the MTGO route but I kind of liked physically collecting them...but honestly who would I ever play against in real life hmm

Where do you live? There's been an uptick in table-top gaming stores opening in urban areas. I can think of a handful or so in the Raleigh area. Most will have organized tournaments and almost always just have random people playing.

MTGO has never been, and continues to be not a very good experience. Especially compared with how well Hearthstone was implemented. I'd recommend you stay away.

Regular MTG is alive and doing very well. I got back into playing casual kitchen table Magic with 7-8 friends about two years ago. Started out with buying one of the pre-constructed event decks (they work surprisingly well) and have since built a bunch of decks across multiple formats.

While kids do play MTG, I would never in a million years classify it as a "kids game". Most pre-releases and drafts I've been to lately have been 90% people 21+ y/o.

There are a bunch of game stores in the area:

Event Horizon - down in Garner by the 70/401 split
Gamer's Armory - Cary near Cary Town Center
Game Theory - Pleasant Valley
Endless Gaming - on Hillsborough across from Meredith, may have closed?
Atomic Games - up in Durham, they have beer on tap

Game Stores are great for hosted events like Drafts or Pre-Releases. I think the next set of cards comes out in Mid-July, and it will be a good intro set for people interested in picking the game back up.

i play a lot with friends. im still trying to find a place nearby worthwhile going to (i live in clayton.) we normally play at someone's house. i find that a lot of these card shops and game stores are heavily into the EDH format (http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=magic/rules/edh). I don't play EDH. They sometimes have casual play going on too though.

here's a deck i've made. it may have been tweaked since ive uploaded it. it's really fun.
