i get random crashes when using the latest FF build. i'll be just reading a webpage after everything has loaded and then boom, FF closes and gives the error message. this happens a few times a week; and it's not always on the same page it crashes.

I've had the opposite - my FF was crashing before I installed Snow Leopard and now it works perfectly fine.

1. have one window open, only on one side of the screen.
2. place the mouse in the middle of the screen (where the window will be in exposé).
3. hit exposé.

so i decided it was time to upgrade. i purchased the mac box set to upgrade from tiger to snow leopard. this morning i try to install and apparently i dont have enough RAM for the upgrade. ugh.

im running a 2006 macbook pro with the 1.83 GHz intel core duo and have 512mb of memory and 667 MHz RAM

just to be clear, i dont really know what any of that means, i just know how to find it on my computer

if i am going to crack open my laptop to upgrade RAM, i'd also like to upgrade my harddrive. i have a 100gb external that is about full, mostly of pictures and movies that would be nice to have on my computer

sooo what i need to know is how much RAM i should install. i dont understand RAM very well but i know i need more! i also need to know what kind of RAM and hard drives i should be looking for that will fit my laptop

also as far as installing, my laptop is out of warranty anyway so i dont have a problem with someone going in there to install this stuff. i certainly dont feel comfortable doing it but would trust someone else to install stuff for me. somehow i think the apple store will be too expensive. i'm trying to upgrade and get more life out of my 3.5 year old laptop and not go out and buy a new one.

^go to http://www.newegg.com and filter by Mac and so on to find the ram that you need. I'm not 100% sure about your model but I believe it can handle 2gb which is what I'd go with. Installing the ram is a piece of cake. Its located under the battery.

do the same thing for the hard drive through http://www.newegg.com and find the compatible hard drives and pick the size you want. Careful with the 750gb hard drive if you do go that high because its not compatible with some macbook's/pros even though technically speaking it is. The issue is that the drive is ever so slightly too thick and your case won't close properly because of it.

As for installing its also really simple and there are tutorial videos online here: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/ if you do want to do it yourself.

ram is VERY cheap. do NOT go to apple for it though, they'll charge you like 3x what it should cost

i'd go with 2GB personally. you should get that for maybe $75 at most?

also where can i get a tiny screwdriver that will open my case? im kind of nervous about cracking it open seeing as i have NO idea what i'd be doing and could end up paying someone to help me anyway. maybe i'll put something up on craigslist to have someone install the stuff for me. how long should it take?

ram is a 5 minute job. you literally unscrew one cover, pop old chips out, put new chips in, put cover back on..

hard drive is about the same for actually swapping out the drive but then obviously you have to reinstall leopard/move all your shit, blah blah blah

SATA is the type of connector the hard drive uses to connect to the computer. the other option is called IDE. everything i found with the 8 seconds of googling i did says it's SATA though..so yea, any 2.5" SATA drive will do soo google or newegg or whatever will find you something

also, i have almost everything on an external hd anyway so swapping out an hd is not a big deal. also i dont have snow leopard installed yet (hence the ram problem)

i do have several applications (some free some i paid for) that i would want to transfer, how can i transfer them between hds without having to pay again? i have no idea how to handle that...

^copy the folders on to your external drive. Then copy them back on the new install. Except for a very few professional apps (Adobe/Autodesk notably), backing up apps on OSX is just copy/paste.

And yes it's worth 4gb. I upgraded my Mac mini to 4gb and it makes it a completely different computer.

the dollar tree has small screwdriver sets. thats what i got when i upgraded my ram. i think the 1.86 core duo mbp max out at 2GB. maybe someone else can verify this?

if you really wanna be sure.. take the old HD out, take a picture of the connector, and post it on here. hell, it'll probably say "SATA blah blah blah" on the case somewhere too..

but i'm sure with about 30 seconds of googling you can figure it out for sure. the only options are SATA and IDE. and all notebooks are 2.5" drives..

i read about this today too.. definitely worries me as im preparing to install snow leopard by the end of the week.

just to be clear... can someone define what is meant by guest account? i dont know if i should be worried. i am the main user of the computer and im the admin or whatever but my boyfriend also has his own login. is that considered a 'guest' account? or is a guest account another account without a required password to get in? he's the only other person who uses my laptop and since his ipods are sync'd to my computer, it makes sense for him to have his own itunes library and a separate login was the best way to achieve that.

if that IS considered a guest account, can someone better explain this

A Guest account and just another account are two different things. IIRC, a Guest account's username is Guest. If your boyfriend's account has something else for his username, you're probably just fine. FWIW I haven't noticed any problems like data loss with my SL install, and I've had it since a few days after the release.

The guest account is a specific account you can enable on the computer. It's essentially a very limited account for guests that, when the guest logs out, deletes all the saved information in the guest account so that each time someone logs in with the guest account, it's like a brand new account.

so i ordered the wrong RAM and the chip doesn't fit in my laptop so i have to send it back and wait for my new shit to get here

soo question. can i keep the 1gb ram i already have and just add another 1gb? or should i just order 2 chips from the same manufacturer?

i am now more clear on what i need to get as far as selection a chip, i just need to know if i can mix and match or if i should just get 2 new chips

Your current 1GB is probably made up of 2x512MB chips, so in order to upgrade you'd need to replace both.

If, for some weird reason, you have one single 1GB chip, then yeah you can, and probably should, buy an identical chip to match it.

btw, I haven't had Safari crash on me in several weeks now, even though it's temporarily stalled or gotten bogged down occasionally after running for many days or with dozens of tabs open for extended periods.

Middle of last month, like many people, it was crashing constantly. I don't recall if it stopped with the OS X 10.6.1 update, or with Safari 4.0.3, but whenever they did seemed to work.

ok kids i need help again!

i got the new (right) RAM, installed it and installed my new hard drive using a video on youtube. i'm very confident i did it all right, there were no major issues or question marks, i followed the instructions and it all went the same as the video. i screwed it all back together and put in the leopard CD and held down C while i powerd it on (plugged it in)

the disk is spinning but the screen is black and the power light on the front just below the mouse is flashing.

any ideas? i dont want to open this fucker back up, i already ended up with 2 spare screws

If it's flashing 3 times, then it's a RAM issue. Either the RAM isn't properly installed, is the wrong type, or is bad.

thanks for helping me narrow it down! it is flashing 3 times, 1 time per second then a quick pause.

i checked and one of the chips didnt seem to be pushed in all the way. i started it back up and the same problem. any other ideas?

i got the RAM from other world computing, it fits properly and its twin 1gb chips, i just got it in the mail today and took it out of the package...

Since it's a macbook pro, it can boot with one RAM chip just fine, the best way to figure out what's going on is to remove one chip and see if it boots. If it doesn't, try moving the chip to the other RAM slot, if that doesn't work, try doing the same thing with the other RAM chip.

If it boots with a single chip in one slot and not the other, it's most likely a logic board issue, and you'll need to call apple or make an appointment at one of the stores. If it boots fine from either slot with a single chip, then most likely the other chip is bad.

so i put my old RAM chip into the original spot and used one of the new RAM chips in the second slot. it booted up great and now i'm onto installing snow leopard

when i just had that new piece of RAM in the slot the original was in, i got the error message

is it ok to used mixed RAM? its working so i dont know if i should expect long term problems. hey as long as it works, im not really a snob about whats under the hood

Generally, as long as the RAM is the same type, you shouldn't have any problems. When you start up, check About this Mac in the apple menu and make sure it says you have the amount of RAM you think you should have. If not, I'm guessing your new RAM is bad and I would exchange it.

If you swap the chips positions from where they are now, does the computer still boot? It definitely sounds like a RAM issue, but it could be the beginnings of larger issues.

If you have the original discs that came with the computer, you should be able to boot a hardware test off one of them that could give you more information.

So i was in the apple store the other day and the salesman was telling someone that they could buy the 'upgrade' snow leopard if they have leopard but if their machine has tiger they would have to buy the software pack that comes with iWork and iLife because they can't use the 'upgrade' edition. That's the official Apple policy per http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC223 But the number of intel machines sold with tiger is probably low enough that Apple didn't think it was worth putting in any sort of checks for this.

\/ Yeah, the disc is a full install, regardless of whether or not you actually have Tiger or Leopard. It doesn't check to make sure. To be honest though, most of the people who have an intel mac and still have tiger, likely still have the old ilife/iwork software and wouldn't mind buying the bundle anyway.
