Not a deliberate pass to the attacker, but like... a defender turns around and plays it back to his keeper without realizing the forward was right there, who intercepts the ball and scores. That's not offside.

That's how I've always interpreted it anyways.

haha rooney always tried a chip at least once a game

well giggs was certainly protesting that, and ive always thought if it comes off a defender it doesnt matter if you were offsides or not since the ball wasnt played to you by your own teammate. giggs might have been offsides when carrick played the ball initially but i didnt think he was since he was making a break for a through ball on the right side of the box

when do the votes go in for world player of the year? cause i dont think ronaldo wants to relinquish his throne as he scored 2 more today.

[Edited on September 30, 2009 at 4:40 PM. Reason : didnt watch it but kaka took a penalty instead of ronaldo, so theoretically couldve had a hat trick]

I think the situation falls under the "gaining an unfair advantage" category but I could be totally wrong.

idk. one of the guys in the booth after the game mentioned you could argue that the goal shouldve been allowed when they were talking about how giggs has been playing great. that was one of the highlights they brought up

wow marseille got screwed on that red card penalty. the dude won the ball hard but fair. not sure why the ref was conned into giving that penalty and sending the player off. the ball was clearly won and flew out of bounds 90 deg in the direction ronlawldo was going

idk why but it just feels like to me the refs are getting worse every year...does anyone else agree with me? and if so why is this happening?

I don't know if they're necessarily worse..

There's just so much pressure on officials now - media and fans are scrutinizing diving/not diving, penalty decisions for and against, added time for substitutions more than ever recently - I know it would personally make me a little more nervous doing a game knowing there were all these things I know everybody is going to second-guess no matter what I do, which may take some focus off other areas of the game... I dunno.

With all the slow motion replays, different angles of plays, and HD quality on our TVs, it's easy to second guess officials' decisions but we tend to forget they're making those decisions on the spot in real-time and we also tend to forget that even though they try not to, there is always going to be a human error element in decisions.

It's probably going to eventually end up with extra officials behind the goals, which I think is going to be bullshit because if you really called every foul in the penalty area like you did the rest of the field, we'd see 4 or 5 penalties a game.

well ive talked about penalties in the box with my dad recently and we both think they need to change the rule a bit. both of us came to a similar conclusion that penalties pretty much wide of the 6 yard box need to be PK's placed from an angle 12 yards out from the goal line on the side the penalty happened. my dad said there should be 3 spots to have a pk from in the box and i had said something about a semi circle in the box where the pk would be placed depending on whrere the person was fouled.

i forgot why we were talkin about that. but i think it was something that we wanted to see more fouls called in teh box like out in the field but make it more fair on the GK instead of penalties on the edge of the box that give someone a free shot from the middle of the box

I'd like to see the spot moved back 3 or 4 yards... and the player who gets fouled is the player that takes it.

yeah we also discussed moving it back too instead. but we both came to the conclusion that it would be easier for the taker since the angle isnt as bad...as in the angle between the gk and taker is greater now and easier for the taker to pick a spot...but this would prob prevent players who like to blast in pk's, since it would be easier to blaze it over...idk.

anyway i drew up a diagram on what i meant. fouls in the left box channel result in pk's on that left spot, same on the right, and the founds in between the edge of the 6 and inside of the box is from the regular pk spot.

I think that swings the advantage too much in the defense's favor... it seems like it would be pretty hard to score from the outside spots and you'd end up seeing a lot of intentional fouling on 2v1's or 3v2's like you see in basketball on breakaway dunks or lay-ups.

How about moving the spot back to the 18 but letting the goalkeeper come out as far as the goal area?

it wouldnt be that hard to score from those spots. a lot of players will try bending them in back post. also it could set up some interesting set piece plays from those spots

You guys are making this way too complicated. I'm in favor of the current system because of how simple it is. I'm also in favor or retroactively punishing players for diving in the box... very harshly, might I add. At least a 2 game suspension if it's determined they dived. I don't care who it is or what team they play for... this is the #1 issue with soccer constantly and they need to put a stop to it by any means necessary.

^^ yeah I agree with that 100%

But I still think penalties need some kind of adjustment anyways. I'd like to see some statistics on what percentage are converted but it's got to be pretty high. For some fouls that occur on the very outskirts of the box from a ridiculous angle... awarding a team a pretty much guaranteed goal just seems a little harsh to me.

Just watched a replay of the Man U game. Just wanted to comment on the Giggs offside. It looked like the pass was played and there were 2-3 ManU players offsides, including Giggs. The ball was played and ricocheted off the defender, off a ManU player and off a defender again it looked like. In this case, it's still being treated as a pass from the offensive player because the defense never had possession of the ball. That's pretty much the key. At the time the ball is played, offense has possession and if it touches a defender but they never gain possession it's still offsides. BUT... if a defender tries to clear the ball and it bounces off an offensive player into the path of a player who is in an offside position it's still offsides. So the ricochet rule favors the defense in all cases basically.

^ I think that if an offensive player is taken down inside the box (especially at the professional level) that means they had a pretty good chance at scoring. I'd say somewhere around 20-30% chance of scoring because if they get taken down that means the defense is scrambling to stop them. You also have to take into account that it is quite a different kind of foul needed to award a penalty than to award a foul anywhere else on the field. That already favors the defense slightly. So somewhere around 80% of penalties are converted at the professional level which is a fair percentage seeing as how the offense was taken out without ever getting a chance to shoot on goal from an almost surely dangerous position. I like the system and the only complaint I have is that it encourages diving inside the box, which could be eradicated with retroactive suspensions.

I honestly wouldn't mind a rule saying the player brought down has to take the penalty though that's a minor issue at best in my mind.

this is an interesting lineup by fergie today...im not sure if hes playing 3 in the back and deploying fabio and either neville/oshea as wingbacks/subdued midfielders or if hes playing 4 in the back and putting fabio in the midfield...i know fabio can play the wing too so this should be interesting

i guess this is prob gonna be some sort of 4-5-1 since berbatrike is up top by himself

even more lol's....dida fumbling the ball around in the box and raul puts it in the open net....how does dida still have a job for any club of this stature?? oh wait, ac milan are shit now hahaha. pure comical dida

per espn commentary:

Quote :
" 20'

Incredible. I was just thinking Dida's been around for years. I remember him chcuking one in his own net when Leeds United were in the Champions League back in Spetember 2000.

19'

What a disaster for Dida! Granero's shot was tame and the 'keeper palms it to the floor, fumbles it on the bounce, it hits his knee and rolls to Raul who taps into an empty net. What a howler."
