a coach should IMPROVE the players. archer is making them forget how to tackle. if we fired him mid-season and replaced him with someone who didnt know what the hell they were doing, we would get better. he should be gone after this game.

Someone quoted O'Brien saying that he would never fire an assistant. I'm fairly certain NCSU is O'Brien's last stop before he retires, but that he still wants to coach a few more years. I wonder at what point he would throw Archer under the bus to keep his own job secure? O'Brien is too smart to keep someone around that is sabotaging his efforts.

Reading The Blind Side by Michael Lewis, which is about Michael Oher (movie with sandra bullock coming out soon), and NC State is mentioned several times. We apparently were trying to recruit him. Everyone agreed that Oher was a once-in-a-decade type of offensive linemen, physical freak bigger and faster than 99% of other players.

Anyway, the illustrious Noel Mazzone brought his plague to ole miss for a year (Oher's first year) before he was fired. The book says about him:

This reminded me a lot of how Archer runs his shit, this is how kentucky fans always talk about him. A complete and latent lack of imagination and ability to deal with the cards dealt to him, and he ends up blaming the players instead. He needs to be dealt with as people dealt with Mazzone. Archer and Mazzone are both on the low end of the coordinator bell curve.

Get him out of here. We won't get Bill Walsh-caliber, but hopefully we can someone who is at least above average.

TOB's quoted as saying “He built a heck of a defense at Kentucky." This makes me wonder if he actually bothered to LOOK at the defensive numbers from Kentucky. I suppose the fact that their offense was on the field most of the time (which tends to naturally help a defense perform) has eluded TOB?

Since TOB doesn't seem inclined to changed the defensive game plan going forward then I guess we won't be looking for a late season surge like we've enjoyed previously.

If Archer is still around next season TOB's seat is going to warm up. It won't be a hotseat, not near that yet, but it'll bet getting warm.

^^ If we have another losing season (that would be 4 consecutive losing seasons in case anyone forgets) due to our terrible defense, and he still refuses to make coaching staff changes, he needs to hit the road. Face it, we're stuck with him until the end of the season. It's not in O'Brien's nature to fire or demote someone midseason, and we all know Fowler won't do anything about it. After this disaster of a season is over, I think he's gone. If TOB insists on keeping him after the season is over, I think he's signing both of their tickets out of Raleigh after 2010.
