Came up with the design solution to a problem I've been mulling over for the past 2 or 3 weeks. And of course, I'm not at work right now. Will have to keep it in mind until I can start workin on it again, lol 8/16/2012 10:07:15 PM |

^^Lol actually if you're strictly speaking in terms of checking for true color accuracy consistency thats not outside the realm of being reasonable. But if thats the case then they should just be sending the Pantone codes. That doesn't look like they're actually using swatches of any special color standard or anything. 1/19/2013 11:32:57 PM |
lewisje All American 9196 Posts user info edit post |
The problem is that not all of the Pantone colors fall into the RGB gamut and vice-versa; also IIRC there is no freely available conversion of Pantone codes to other specification systems. 1/20/2013 2:52:10 AM |
Lionheart I'm Eggscellent 12775 Posts user info edit post |
True enough and since every display on the planet has different specs and configs you're never gonna get the consistency of print media. Just being devils advocate on the swatches. 1/20/2013 9:35:29 AM |

Hopefully this is the right place to post the question.
I don't usually mix graphics and CSS-assigned colors, but I'm working on something right now that doesn't give me a choice and it's causing problems. The color of the graphic is the same as the background color, but depending whether I look at it on a monitor using a VGA cable or a DVI cable, they show differently. It's not just that all the colors are a little different, it's that the color of the graphic shows differently than the color of the background. I've checked the color representation using several onscreen tools and they report back as the same thing.
Is there a way to fix this? Obviously, I would like for it to be consistent for everyone, regardless of which cable they're using. 3/1/2013 10:34:31 AM |

I guess it's because of "gamma" or something like that. Oh well.
It was easy to create a 1x1-pixel square to use as a repeating background. Now it all matches. I just wasn't sure if I did something wrong. 3/1/2013 3:24:11 PM |

Tools like Firebug and Chrome Developer Tools make it easy to inspect the code, but if I want to copy an isolated section and play around with it locally, it would be a pain to copy all the individual elements and their associated css. And probably just as much work to save the entire source and pare out the unrelated code.
It would be great if I could right-click a node in Firebug and have a "Save html+css for this node" option. Does such a tool exist? " |

Been messing around with Harp - https://github.com/sintaxi/harp this weekend - pretty cool, still needs some work though.
Lets you write all your stuff in jade/less/stylus/coffeescript, then compiles automatically on the server side. 10/6/2013 9:07:59 AM |

While reading this heartwarming story about a former MetLife worker who became homeless and then started to learn Javascript: http://www.slate.com/blogs/business_insider/2013/09/26/video_leo_the_homeless_coder_speaks.html
I learned about this site, which allows you to set up a free dev environment for Go, Ruby, Node.js, or Python; if you join via this link, I'll be able to use more RAM or storage, or possibly make more than one box (or I could just start paying to get those things): https://www.nitrous.io/join/GdisAEq3OGw 10/7/2013 12:34:38 AM |

Any experienced Android devs in RDU looking for a full-time job?
Daycare friend works at a local company and asked if I knew any Android developers (pfft, Windows Phone and 8.1/RT for life!!1). This was a conversation at a toddler birthday party so I'm forgetting some of the details (like the name of the company!), I just wanted to post this before I forgot about it. Will get more information or I can put you in touch with my friend directly. She does HR side for the company so her dev. knowledge was cursory. The position is permanent, not term contract or anything. They are smallish in size but business is solid and expanding.
My understanding is they already have their iOS side taken care of so you are the other side of the coin for the dev. team for a full service product (not an app factory or anything). Position requires deep experience in modern Android development and to know ins and outs of Google Play app submission. Said they do extensive testing but not sure if they were TDD. Said their pay is competitive but not mind blowing, they focus on great benefits (full family healthcare covered, very generous leave policy: even pay $1000 of your vacation when you take extended paid vacation. *had "problems" with employees not taking any leave*). They contract to municipalities and universities... not exactly sure on the product at the moment but I think it was transportation related. 10/30/2013 12:10:50 PM |

New thing I've been messing with:

I like it a lot. Very easy to work with. Based on AngularJS, uses Apache Cordova as a build tool. Extremely simple to scaffold up something and spit out an Xcode and ADT project. 11/29/2013 11:33:26 PM |

This is the best web framework I've come across. Completely isolates view logic from business logic. Don't know as much about it as I should, but been using it this year. 12/19/2013 9:21:12 AM |

my team has been using it for the past 6 months or so. It's very powerful and i especially like directives, but some of the syntax is unnecessarily unintuitive/non-discoverable, the documentation is notoriously lacking, it's hard to find good sources of best practices and what you do find online you can't trust if it's > 3 months old
still, i like it best compared to the other MV* js frameworks i've used

so.. have any of you guys been using the AWS js sdk's? specifically to create 0 web tier and/or 0 apptier apps. with static assets in S3/cloudfront, rich html5/javascript client side code, and things like dynamo allowing for very rich user controls stored and maintained with a few IAM roles and extended to millions of users via IAM STS, I'm thinking you could do a lot without any web server at all, maybe even without an app server. 12/30/2013 5:21:32 PM |
