some of the lows: they're tallest guy was 6'4", and they beat us 19-11 on offensive rebounds. 19 turnovers.
but from listening, it sounded like we played pretty well. it sounded like it was two walk-ons making all the plays in the last few minutes.

Shouldn't be. I've played in many rec league games where we got doubled up in score by vastly superior opponents who suck against their peers. That's about what happened here.11/5/2009 9:48:46 PM |

Horner needs to shoot inside the 3 point arc, unless he makes his 1st three point attempt and then maybe he can shoot from 3 again. 11/5/2009 9:52:36 PM |

i, too, was impressed. i still realize we will be lucky to win 4 ACC games this year, but after a couple years of Sid saying we were going to push the ball, I wasn't really believing him this year. We definitely were playing a bit up-tempo though. Let's just hope that continues against real competition.
Wood's going to be huge for us this year. And Painter will in a year or two. kid's quick for a big man. 11/5/2009 11:05:25 PM |

Hey no argument here. I think people are really excited about the potential though. Painter/Wood looked really good. Lots of potential.

smith will be a beast (is a beast) - he was by far the best player on the court last night regardless of his size advantage
wood is a great shooter but will have to gain strength or he won't get many shot opportunities against tougher opponents who can "D" him up; for this year, we will have to use some screens to help free him up b/c he has a great stroke and can be a great weapon. don't think he will be able to create his own shot a lot against tougher opposition at this time. still, good to see a great shooter in a Pack uniform
javi played well as the distributor type tonight but we will need him to score more when ACC play rolls around b/c after smith who is going to score?
Painter - athletic but raw. will have moments but I think it would be unfair to expect A TON from him this year. With his athleticism he should be able to help with rebounding as this looked like an issue at times last night.
everyone else was meh. pretty much what i was expecting. i think horner is a key to this team. we need him to find his stroke and score b/c to me that looks like the biggest problem for this team. not a ton of guys that are going to score a lot. i predict a lot of low scoring games this year. we will have to have low scoring games if we are going to win games. 11/6/2009 8:08:39 AM |

Haha, no we don't... at least not under Lowe.
But anyway, Wood seems like he had a good game, which is the most important thing because the guards likely were not as undersized as the interior.
If Tracy didn't have a good game against these undersized schlubs we'd be in real trouble... Still need to see him rebound better defensively.
JV won't play once we get to the meat of our schedule. Horner needs to get inside and use that extra muscle.
Overall, good job, but you really can't tell anything from this game. If we run train against actual D-1 competition (no matter the team) then you can start to talk about it...11/6/2009 8:15:25 AM |

Lowe interview on WPH makes it sound like Thomas is third on the depth chart behind Wood and Davis. Kind of surprising to me since I figured him to be a starter on this team.

I can't argue, since I wasn't there, but the radio guys kept saying CJ was playing great. I don't think he did anything spectacular, but he had 5 assists in the first half alone.
With him, Javi, Wood, and Horner, we're going to have some pretty decent outside shooting this year (assuming Horner finds his shot).11/6/2009 10:13:59 AM |

^^^It very well may have been an absurd thing to figure, but as long as lafta and hooksaw are here, I am pretty confident I am safe from "most absurd" title.
At the small-forward position he would have been competing against two freshman one of whom was completely unheralded and what I have seen of JT hasn't been bad. He is obviously very athletic and I though that whatever timidness he had post-injury he may have overcome. Maybe I was wrong. I haven't seen him play yet this year, and clearly Lowe is favoring the two freshman from practices.

From the box score, we missed 23 shots and had 11 OR.
They missed 53 shots and had 19 OR.
But I don't think there's much to take away form this game given the disparities in the opponent and all that.11/6/2009 10:29:52 AM |

Johnny Thomas had offers from Miami (FL) and Virginia Tech fwiw, as well as offers from George Washington and Old Dominion. He committed pretty early to us, and iirc Wake Forest was close to offering before he committed. Clemson, FSU, and Xavier also heavily recruited Johnny. 11/9/2009 12:11:20 AM |
