I'll hand the coin change back and get the "it's all yours man" head nod or wave. To which I either reply..."really?? thanks a lot man" in a sarcastic tone or I say..."no man...you keep it...really."
Two things happen. The cheap fuck tips more next time or I don't have to worry about wasting my time serving somebody who tips shitty. Either way, I don't lose. 5/4/2010 4:44:28 PM |

People do this with small lunch bills all the time
They think the 15-20 percent for larger bills translates to bills of 5 or 6 dollars

I dont care if the bill is $5.00. 20% is the most anyone should tip ever. Take my dollar and be happy or find another job. Also when i order water with lemon don't act pissed because i did not order a goddamn sweat tea or a coke that costs 2.50. On a different note tipping should be done on total bill before the taxes. Why should i spend more money on your tip because some fucks raise the sales tax. 5/4/2010 4:56:47 PM |

^ How is the sales tax relevant here? By that argument, you might as well just say that all sandwiches in any restaurant should cost $5 and you'll only tip on that $5 burger value, even though the burger cost $15. 5/4/2010 5:02:20 PM |

I don't know where you work, and I don't care about where you work. You sound like an ungrateful fuck. Treating your customers in such a way as you said you would because they didn't tip up to YOUR standards is a dick headed move on YOUR part, and I hope you get your ass canned because of it.

IMO, it doesn't make you look like a cheap prick if you leave 1.20 on a 5-6 dollar club sandwich. All the fucking waiter did in that case was throw some chips on a plate, maybe a pickle on the side, and bring you the sandwich. Hell, they might have even refilled your water. GASP!
If these waiters want to get paid more on a tip, then perhaps they should consider working at a place that charges more for food, where you're more likely to get a richer clientèle.
When I go out to eat, I'm not fucking UNICEF. I will tip you accordingly. But it's not MY job to make sure you can pay the rent on time. Not all of us go out with the intent of funding another college student's tuition.5/4/2010 5:29:02 PM |

All depends on whether or not I regularly go to a place.
If I'm travelling, I'm probably low on cash and not worried about what the staff thinks of me because I'll never return. I leave 15%, because I'm not a fucking barbarian like the non-tipping bastards.
If it's a place around Raleigh that I go to regularly, I leave 20-25% (often more if it's a bar). Normally this pays off. If it doesn't, the service is probably shitty and I probably won't be a regular long. 8/23/2010 9:54:37 AM |

God, now I know how old people feel.
You fuckers regularly tipping 20-25 percent are ridiculous. That's how much you tip for outstanding service or like a lady-be-pregnant-and-it's-Christmasttime tip. But, nooooo, y'all are just out and about throwing your money away and raising the tipping standard yet again.
And can you believe the balls on these "servers?" Rolling their eyes if you get a water or split an entree. I think this a sign of the times...we've all noted how much brattier each generation is compared to the previous one. And it was bound to happen eventually, I guess...we're being served by brats.

^^No, you're just cheap. If you can't afford to go out and tip, then just eat at home.
^^^What's the difference in a dollar?? $9 or $10 is just ridiculous for a Coors Light anyways...just get drunk before you get there, that way you only have to buy a beer or two. Bartenders and/or beer cart girls at games and concerts still get paid by tips...not by salary (maybe the beer tub girls are different, but I doubt it). You not tipping them is essentially saying that you don't care whether or not you drink at the event. Luckily there are non-cheap people at the concert/game that tip that make it so these employees keep coming back to work to serve cheap people like yourself.

Tipping does create some unrealistic expectations and entitlement and screws up the workforce!
In 2001, I was new in the US at N C state. I went to this orientation conducted by somebody in Talley Student Center about dos and don’ts. We (all the foreigners in the class ) were told to tip 10% for reasonable service with a minimum of 1$. 8/23/2010 10:45:25 AM |

Listen, just because a very small percentage of you are trying to pay your way through college doesn't mean that i should just throw away my hard earned money. A majority of you are college drop outs(or peope with worthless degrees) / druggies/ alcoholics who could not find any other job that actually required a skill set. And I don't feel bad at all when I leave a 15% tip because really... how fucking hard is it to re-fill a soda or bring out some fucking dishes. You act like its your god given right to my hard earned money ( the skill set that it took me to acquire through hard work and sleepless nights studying ).
I do sympathize with those trying to get a worthwhile degree and pay their way through college with these kinds of jobs, but there are other options out there. 8/23/2010 10:50:19 AM |

^^I suppose it can. But when I worked a shitty retail job with no tipping I felt no motivation to go above and beyond. No matter what I did my income would be the same, and promotions didn't exist. When I worked a shitty bartending job I felt the motivation to do more because I knew it would directly influence my income.
Incentives work my friend. And while I tried to do a good job for everybody, you better believe good tippers got priority. I can't imagine why you'd expect a rational person to do otherwise.
^Well, I'm of the school that you needn't feel bad for tipping 15% (though unless the service is bad, you should for anything less). But part of that is selfish -- if you never tip above 15% at my favorite places and I always do, I'm going to reap benefits.

Pretty much this is what it is. I'm not going to buy a $9 beer. Not spending $10 on a fucking $2 beer isn't "being cheap," it's "being smart." Fuck that. And if that means that the people who are working the event miss out on my $1, too bad. And given your fucked-up logic ITT, you probably think I should be dropping $3 in their tip jar for a $9 beer. Grumpy, in the practical world I agree incentives work to a great extent in the short run.
I think what is being disagreed upon here is if the magnitude of incentives being demanded are in proportion to the skill and effort required to do the job or not? It does not take too long for an incentive to become a routine entitlement.

I helped open up a bar last year where I tossed out several resumes that had engineering and law school degrees listed. There are plenty of drop outs in the service industry. But the majority of people I've worked with have college degrees, and good ones at that.

Depends on what or where the event is. I have friends that bartend at music venues that get paid like regular service people. If they are employees at the music venues, then they are getting paid $2/3 an hour. So yes, their salary is tip money.
