"isn't Galactic like a shitty jam/funk band?"

that's kinda selling them short. i generally don't categorize them as a jam band, but i guess i can see where people would think that. they're also like acid jazz/fusion/a little bit of electronic here and there. they're big in the new orleans scene and have done a lot of stuff with hip hop artists. the cool thing about their shows is you never know who's gonna show up and do a song or two with them, or who they brought along for their show. bonnaroo wouldn't keep bringing them back year after year if they were just a shitty jam/funk band.

plus this is pretty much the best video ever

if by 100 degrees plus you mean highs in the high 80s-low 90s with 30-40% chance of scattered thunderstorms every day, then yes.

The XX was beautiful and great.

Edward Sharpe etc. were really fun.

Dr. Dog's the shit.

Steve Martin is the man.

The Gossip was pretty cool.

She & Him were cute, I guess.

i wrapped my camera in a poncho and shot them from the photo pit for 2 songs. got bloody as hell, camera survived.

when they stabbed the guy and blood sprayed from tubes going through his chest he legitimately aimed at me for 3 solid seconds.

^ haha. one guy said at the last show he went to some girl got sprayed a lot and took her top off so the guy spraying blood turned and aimed directly at her for a couple seconds

the best shows i saw were probably:

the entrance band
dr. dog
tenacious d
the black keys
the dead weather
jay-z (dude earned a TON of cool points for that show)
ween

i also really enjoyed what i saw of:

jeff beck
les claypool
galactic
lcd soundsystem (although galactic had a much better light show imo)
deadmau5
GWAR
damian marley and nas

^ Stevie killed it.

I wasn't let down by the John Fogerty show, but I have been hyped up about it for months.

I went in knowing nothing about the Damian Marley and Nas combo, at least as far as hearing any of the tunes before the show, but I was impressed.

I don't even really like Jay-Z that much, but that show was the tits.

Saw a lot of cool bands I wasn't familiar with, lots of shit to check out in the next few days.

i stayed for the first 30 minutes of his show and then went back to our camp at tent only because we were so far back at his show and could still hear it really well at our tent. i was surprised at how good he sounded. definitely a great show from what i heard.

3 of my friends went, but i opted out and decided to save a spot for them for ween. they were all pretty disappointed by it and left early.

NPR is streaming a bunch of soundboard quality shows recorded over the weekend. i didn't see very many of these, but i might check out some of the ones i missed later this week.

I thought it was pretty good, but I'm a huge CCR fan and my parents were too and never saw him live.

I left Fogerty and saw the last hour of Ween, we went around to the right side of the stage and were only like 3 rows back, that side was pretty empty.

There were a TON of people selling Molly there. That and the purple Decepticons seemed to be the official psychedelic drugs of Bonnaroo 2010. I had a blast even though it was super hot. The Flaming Lips and LCD Soundsystem were definitely the highlights for me. That LCD crowd was easily the best crowd I've ever been a part of, and I've been to a decent amount of shows in my time. I was really, really glad the Lips played an hour-and-fifteen-minute set of their material first, that was perfect because I didn't care to see them cover DSOTM and high-tailed it over to the end of Bassnectar to get a good spot for LCD. We ended up front and center, I was about 10-20 feet from James Murphy. Other bands I was impressed with: Dr. Dog, Phoenix, the National, The Dead Weather, Jay-Z was cool for the vibe, Local Natives had a surprising amount of energy, Miike Snow and Neon Indian put on fantastic shows, shocked how many people were at Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, that was not bad, crowd at Deadmau5 ruled, Aziz Ansari did all new material and it was some of the funniest shit I've ever heard. Didn't enjoy as much: The Dodos and Here We Go Magic are good bands who aren't right for Bonnaroo, couldn't get into Ween even though all my friends loved it/them, Conan O' Brien was cool to be at but wasn't that funny really and was kinda awkward at times, we heard Michael Franti from our campsite and he sounded fucking awful, just kept saying the same shit over and over, only caught a few songs from the Kings of Leon and it seemed fun but corny, Caleb Followill's between-songs banter was really cheesy. Also, heard Wale was a huuuuuuuge douchebag. Missed GWAR, but heard that was pretty badass.

^ On the drug note, had at least 5 people stop by our RV selling chocolate shrooms. Was right up on the stage for Phoenix and it was a good show, although the beach balls and balloons got rediculous about 2 or 3 songs in. Saw Miike Snow Thursday and he was very good. We couldn't even get in to see Aziz or Conan due to the long ass lines trying to get into the theater on the early shows. I didn't even try on the late Aziz shows because there were bands playing I wanted to see. Franti wasn't that bad, but I wasn't really into his set we left about halfway through. KOL was pretty good I thought, and they did a pretty solid cover of the Pixies.

^^Ha, I probably unknowingly saw you from the LCD Soundsystem photo pit. although the photo pit for that show was super jam packed.

^come now, Miike Snow is a band, not a he.

AND THEY'RE SWEDISH, COME ON SWEDEN

Oh, and this was the first year I was not offered drugs even once.

I was surprised at how good phoenix was.

hahahaha what the fuck is that? we had some girl come by our camp friday selling blow and moon rocks, which is apparently crystalized MDMA. you learn something new about drugs every time you go to bonnaroo. she also said she heard some rumor that FLips had canceled and roger waters was gonna do the wall instead

and my friend figured the bag of molly he found was worth probably $150-200. like i said, someone must have been pissed. haha and one guy in my group passed out early thursday night and woke up at 4am and did molly and raged at the silent disco til like 6 or something.

Quote :
"couldn't get into Ween even though all my friends loved it/them"

weird because one of my friends who was with me kind of likes ween but isn't a huge fan, and he was really impressed by their show. i've seen them 3 times now (more than any other band ), and that setlist was extremely solid. ween is definitely a unique band that you have to approach differently than any other group, but they're so fucking talented, and whenever they record a song and go after a particular genre of music, they do it extremely well. and gene was on point with all of his banter too

"a lot of bonnaroo this weekend. stevie wonder......ween"

i don't like it when he makes his voice all weird when he sings though, because the guy really does have a very good voice and should just save the bizarre shit for the vocal effects on their albums. dean whipped ass on guitar, as usual.

Quote :
"Caleb Followill's between-songs banter was really cheesy."

one of my friends who has seen KOL multiple times commented when caleb followill was introducing "trani" and said they don't play it that much that he has seen them play it at every show he's been to.

I'll give KOL the cover of "Where Is My Mind." That was definitely pretty badass.

The purple decepticons were rolls that were going around shaped like the Transformers logo. A couple of my buddies ate them right before the Lips took the stage and loved them. Heard several other people raving about them throughout the weekend, too.

As far as Ween, like I said, everyone around me was into it and my buddies who've seen tem multiple times loved it, I just never got it with them. Their lyrics annoy the shit out of me (although I guess that's maybe kinda the point).

haha yeah. a lot of it's kind of tongue in cheek or just weird for the sake of being weird. those guys have done a ton of drugs over the years. they do have some legitimately good songs too though. you just kind of have to wade through the stupid shit to get to them. i thought their cover of "let's dance" was pretty good too.

Dying of dehydration at Bonnaroo at night, when it's reasonably cool? Dude was definitely rolling. And LOL that he was a cookie baker that still lived with his parents and had a shitty band. Not to make light of his death, though, that definitely sucks. RIP.

On a side note, I heard from several people at the LCD show that Wayne Coyne and Aziz Ansari were chilling in the side-stage area. That's pretty badass.
