i wonder if that will stop some teams from huddling around home plate on walk off HR?

^ Doubt it. Short term teams may not celebrate as much on a walk-off, probably less jumping around, but long term something like this will happen again. Honestly looking at the replay it looks like Morales is just uncoordinated and landed poorly on his jump onto home plate. Dude is fat so that played a role in the severity of the injury.

damn, Max Scherzer struck out 14 batters in 5-2/3 innings today. That means he struck out 14 of the 17 batters he faced

he actually faced 24 batters...2 hits, 4 walks, 1 hit-by-pitch...but 14 Ks is always impressive, especially in less than 6 innings

i got a little scare when span and hudson collided in that twins win just now

how pathetic is this?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5236340

Quote :
"Marlins selling Halladay tickets at 'face'

MIAMI -- Here's a chance to buy tickets to a guaranteed perfect game -- the one Roy Halladay already threw.

The Florida Marlins will begin selling on Tuesday unused tickets to the game in which the Philadelphia Phillies ace pitched the 20th perfect game in major league history, a 1-0 victory over the Marlins on Saturday.

All tickets will be regularly priced at "face value" and on sale both online and through the Marlins' box office.

Paid attendance that night was about 25,000, a relatively large crowd for a Marlins' home game. By comparison, Florida drew a paid crowd of 10,115 -- its smallest of the season -- for Monday's game against Milwaukee.

Ubaldo is so sick. No, I'm not realizing this just now, but he is on MLB Network and I don't get to see him throw often...

^^^I meant to say he struck out 14 of the 17 possible outs, not batters faced

^^I think its more pathetic for the people buying the tickets, if they buy a ticket and then act like they were actually in attendance to witness the perfect game

after watching the Mark Buerhle "balk" incident with the umpire, then the bad call that the ump made to steal away Armando Galarraga's perfect game makes me wonder, what the fuck is up with the umpires being such a big part of the game now. Seems like they are trying really really hard to steal some of the spotlight

thank God that Selig is a baseball purist, for the most part.

otherwise a botched call like that could lead to a big-time push for all-around instant replay and maybe coach challenges. that would kill the beauty of the game

i prefer getting the call right to "purity"

if you want "purity" get rid of the dh and bring back the spitball

so you want coaches to be able to throw a red challenge flag?

i don't think it would be so bad to have somebody in a booth somewhere watching replays all the time, and just tell them whether they got it right or wrong, obviously only when a coach would ask and maybe once per team per game.. i'm sure most of them wouldn't use them most of the time anyways

doesnt have to be flags, but yes, I have no problem with a coach being able to make sure a call is right once per game

coach needs extra time to warm up a reliever in the 8th

runner is safe by a mile, but coach demands a review just to buy an extra 10 minutes

This is no reason to call for instant replay

I don't want MLB games to become as boring as NFL games

Does anyone pay attention to the draft, at least in passing? I have that free ESPN insider subscription so I've been reading Keith Law's mocks... he seems to think the Mets are going to take Harvey, which would suck... low ceiling for that position and a Tar Heel... Mets really need to start going overslot to compensate for losing compensation picks for signing Type A's...

Oh, I guess Ernie might since he hates Bryce already...

^ re: Rollins I agree but Utley has a 132 OPS+ and Prado's is 118. What is the issue there? Utley is clearly the more deserving player, as is Uggla.

read this from a baseball thread on the something awful forums:

Quote :
"Ubaldo Jimenez is now 11-1. He gave up a two run home run today in the 8th inning, the first run(s) he has given up since May 15th.

He has given up a total of 46 hits over 80.1 innings in his first 12 starts.
As a point of comparison, Roy Halladay has given up 83 hits over 93 innings in his first 12 starts."

jesus, give him the cy young now.

His numbers are unbelievable

0.78 ERA (the lowest since WWII was Gibson in 69, 1.12)
572 ERA+ (Pedro in 2000, 291)
0.896 WHIP (Pedro in 2000, 0.737)
5.2 H/9 (Ryan in 72, 5.2)

In his only loss, he gave up 1 run on 2 hits in 7 innings

And he does it all without being in the top 10 in K/9

This might be the best pitching season ever

without doing any research, i'd say it's safe to say that Ubaldo is the only pitcher in the majors to have more wins than the rest of the rotation combined

yeah, i know, crazier things have happened, but there's really no conceivable way jiminez can sustain this level of performance over the rest of the season.

keep in mind, 2.5 seasons in the majors isn't a huge sample size

the thing is, if he had a terrible outing and gave up like 8 runs in 2 and a third, his ERA would go up to what, 1.20?

he also gets a good number of his starts against the pathetic giants offense and the strikeout prone diamondbacks
