seeing as how they're both minor league teams i'd say it'd be a pretty good game

i don't put any stock in 1st/2nd season numbers for young players (i.e. Arrieta, Wieters)

it's rare that a player can come in right away and play at a high level

they're all cutting their teeth...it takes time and it's certainly no time to panic about stats.

i'm not really freaking out too much regarding arrieta's performance. i always knew his ceiling was a 3 starter. but the numbers don't lie, and the kid just can't locate his pitches and probably has no confidence whatsoever in his curve considering how he's never able to make hitters miss it. i'm not panicking just yet, but it is a bit frustrating to see him underperform this badly considering how highly regarded the o's young pitching is between him, matusz and tillman.

the same goes for wieters. i know he's only a month younger than i am, and only catchers like buster posey and joe mauer have been able to find their level of offensive success in recent memory. but wieters was regarded as the best position player in his draft class, and he murdered pitching in the minors. like i said, i'm not even close to giving up on these kids, it's just frustrating when they make the jump to the majors and regress so drastically after performing so well before and being hyped so much. i guess that's the difference between the majors and AAA though.

Buck Showalter to be officially hired as manager!

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/bal-orioles-buck-showalter,0,3281966.story

Quote :
"He'll replace interim Juan Samuel, the club's third base coach who compiled a 16-31 record after taking over for Dave Trembley on June 4. The hiring was first reported by ESPN. He'll take over Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels for the start of a seven-game home stand. His deal is for three years starting in 2011, and the coaching staff is expected to remain with the team through at least the end of the season.

Showalter, 54, will lead his fourth team in what will be his 12th season as a big league manager. He becomes the Orioles' 10th manager since principal owner Peter Angelos took over in August 1993."

hopefully this 10 managers in 17 years business will stop now

Traded Tejada to the Padres for minor league P Wynn Pelzer

Quote :
" Here’s what we know about Wynn Pelzer, whom the Orioles received in a deal with the San Diego Padres minutes ago, pending league approval.

Pelzer, 24, was the seventh-rated prospect in the Padres system by Baseball America. He was the former closer at the University of South Carolina and was taken in the ninth round in 2007, getting an above-slot bonus of $190,000.

The right-hander was 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA in 22 games (18 starts) for San Antonio, the Padres' Double-A affiliate. He’s 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds and can throw in the mid 90s, though his velocity dropped some this year.

He is mainly a starter but was switched back to relief recently. One scout that has seen him calls him raw and said he needs work on his delivery and command. But he has a strong live arm and closer’s mentality. There's definitely an upside there. "

Tejada hasn't been very good this year so at least they could get something for him as he only has a 1 year deal. The O's are busy today! Just not busy winning lots of games

showalter is cool i guess. managers just have very little positive impact on the outcome of baseball games, so it's difficult to have any kind of emotional reaction towards anyone.

i'm impressed by Showalter's track record...most former players loved him and say that he is a genius and a meticulous planner

as long as they can improve next year i'll be happy

that's one of the few things you can hope for out of a manager since it's one of the few qualities that can't be measured by stats. but track record and such generally isn't a function of a manager's decisions during games.

i think the sentiment is that Showalter will keep them in most games because of his baseball knowledge alone, something that has been missing for about 10 years

but you're right, at the end of the day he can only do so much...the players have to produce

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Buck-Showalter-to-wear-Johnny-Oates-number-as-Orioles-manager

Quote :
" Buck Showalter will not wear his familiar No. 11 with the Orioles. That number belongs to the man he is replacing as manager, Juan Samuel.

Besides, Showalter has a better idea.

He will wear No. 26.

The number of the late Johnny Oates, Showalter’s friend, mentor and former Orioles manager."

awwwww

Quote :
"“I’ve got a phone number for Earl Weaver. At some point in the next day or two, I’m going to call him. The way they did things with Weaver and all that was very precious to John. He carried that with a lot of pride.”"

love the sound of this, but i've heard it all before. guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

can't knock the hustle

[Edited on August 6, 2010 at 1:04 AM. Reason : they have 3 series sweeps this season...also not bad, considering the 70 something losses]

hahahahahahah what the fuck is wrong with buck showalter?

Quote :
"I looked for that. It's part of playing, not only in the big leagues, but in the American League. Big, strong, hairy guys here. They hit it where the grass doesn't grow. And that's part of playing in this division, this league. That's part of it. We've got some big guys, too. Maybe not as hairy."

and i know tonight wasn't another come from behind win, but the o's brought out the late inning heroics yet again. arrieta had a pretty good outting too.

that distinction now belongs to the Pirates

i am excited for next year's possibilities...Matusz, Guthrie, and Bergesen have been pitching very well

the pitchers are finally getting the run support to win, so we'll see if it keeps up next year...under Showalter, i can't imagine a reason why it wouldn't...he's got a knack for getting the most out of his players
