Ok I already failed this today...I was about to go to the range so I wanted to grab a double cheeseburger from mickey d's for the ride out there...they're like "cash only" so I say fuck the drivethrough and go inside...I hit up the ATM, buy a drink from the convenient store, and walk into the McDonald's...I'm about to order, but theres this little kid right there, so I nod like "you go ahead" and he's like "I want an Apple Pie"...so old girl rings it up and its like $1.11 or some shit...THIS MOTHERFUCKING KID just starts pulling pennies out of his pocket...nothing but pennies...not even one fucking nickel...this little motherfucker is buying his apple pies with 100% pennies...so it takes the cashier like 3 minutes just to count them...god dammit 6/15/2010 5:40:18 PM |

my wife and I do all the meals at night. We come home and cook dinner together and then when dinner is done we pack our breakfasts and lunches for the next day and put them in the fridge. That is the only time we are spending time in the kitchen for all 3 meals of the day. Works out pretty well for us as it is healthier and saves a lot of money. I understand everyone's situation is different though, but that is just a suggestion on how it can get done without having to be in or near a kitchen or microwave 3 times a day.6/17/2010 7:56:48 AM |

^ I pretty much do the same thing. I usually cook a lot of food once or twice a week and then supplement it with sandwiches, soups, etc. to add a little variety.
I don't find it hard to cover 85% of my meals that way, but sometimes there are exceptions. The last fast food I ate (a couple weeks ago) is probably a good example. I fixed breakfast at home and brought lunch to work, but it was a little slack because I didn't have any salad to bring. I ate lunch around noon and a small snack sometime in the afternoon. By 5:00 when I got off I was really hungry. I had a two hour drive ahead of me and no food waiting at my destination, so I decided to hit Cookout on my way out of RTP. It just works out that way sometimes. The real challenge for me will be finding a decent healthy option when I'm in that kind of situation.

^that describes a situation when I might eat fast food. Other times, like 12-1 in the afternoon on a Saturday/Sunday after a night of partying I'm just too lazy to get something together or might not have anything on hand. I'd just rather go out and grab some yummy fast food. 6/17/2010 11:17:56 AM |

at a restaurant I agree - if you are with a group of people eating dinner you kinda look like a bum if you dont order a meal.
But at a bar? I rarely ever order food when I'm out drinking at the bar unless I'm there all day, or get the urge to order some wings or mozzarella sticks to munch on 7/29/2010 12:32:16 PM |

^^^^I don't think most people are counting restaurants or bars as "fast food", thus doesn't count against this so it wouldn't affect your social life. sure a lot of it is unhealthy, but the intent of this thread is about not eating crappy food when you could have made something healthier, tastier, and cheaper yourself, not avoiding any unhealthy food period.
anyway to comment on what you brought up: Yes not eating at a restaurant is silly. Not eating at a bar when you're out drinking? I am hardly ever eating at a place where I am actually out drinking (and not just having a drink with dinner) and neither are the most the people I am with. Different social circles I suppose.

since i'm very calorie-conscious, i can't justify drinking 1000-1200 calories worth of beer AND eating 1000 worth of wings/nachos/burgers

I don't think I could ever go no fast food, because its just too darned convenient & enjoyable to completely remove from the equation. I've only had fast food twice this summer (although once school starts in a few weeks that will probably change). I think of it like dieting, a super strict diet with no way to occasionally break the rules without feeling bad is a pretty sure way, for me at least, to fail at the diet pretty hard.
A no fast food for a year challenge is something I could never do, but if it was no fast food more often than once a week, or twice a month, or once a month... some version with built in allowances so that you don't have to give up a food completely, the I could probably do it. Fast food fries & tacos are never as appealing as they are when you know you can't have them any more. 7/29/2010 12:51:32 PM |

well, I should note that the part of Atlanta I am doesnt have a lot of pure bars, its mostly higher end restaurants that also have bars in them... so its usually go out to one of them, eat, drink, then go to an actual bar afterwards and continue drinking 7/29/2010 1:08:05 PM |

It hasn't been difficult for me. I normally don't eat much fast food anyway. There have been probably five or six times that I would have bought fast food and I didn't, but I've been on the road a lot more than usual over the past 6 weeks so that number is higher than it normally would be.
Most of the times I've just held out or grabbed cashews and a diet Mountain Dew from the gas station to hold me over the ~2 hours until I got to my destination. Twice I've gone into the grocery store and grabbed some food from the deli (my latest purchase was a whole rotisserie chicken, lol). I'd say things got much easier after employing those two means of quick food and now I'm not really worried about whether I "could" cut out fast food completely. It's more of a matter of whether I choose to. 7/30/2010 1:36:12 AM |

None here. I barely even think about that stuff as an option now. I was a little tempted last weekend though. Driving to Cape Hatteras and I was starving...Kept looking for a place to grab a bite and then I passed a Bojangles with about 100 trucks in the parking lot that was looking pretty good. Ended up finding a Seafood place not too far from Plymouth though and ate there instead. Probably no healthier than the Bojo option, but overall I'm glad I have forced myself to seek out other avenues when I needed a quick fix. The vast majority of the time I've been much happier with my decision not to eat fast food. 8/19/2010 8:56:44 AM |

Sometimes I travel for work and 'fast food' is about the only option while we're in the field. If that's the case I try to get the salad, or grilled chicken option, or something along those lines. I'm definitely trying to cut down on my bad habit of eating crappy food. 8/19/2010 10:39:40 AM |

^ Cloos? I don't know if I would consider that to be fast food. Sure it's a greasy burger joint, but if you have to sit down and wait 5-10 minutes for it to be cooked it kindof negates the benefits of a quick drive thru meal. I'm sure everyone has their own definition and that definition can change over time though.
When I think fast food I think of Wendys, BK, Hardees, Bojangles, Cookout, etc. I cut out Smithfields BBQ, but I've had Ole Time BBQ a few times.
Maybe Cloos & Ole Time aren't the healthiest options out there. Maybe the fried seafood I had last weekend was no better than the Bojangles I passed up (from a health perspective), but it's not like you couldn't eat at home and do just as bad or worse. I've found this experiment has led me to eat either healthier food, less food, or better quality food on the occasions where I pass up on the fast food option. In addition, it has made me open my eyes to just how many other options are out there which is difficult to do when you're used to keeping your eyes peeled for the big friendly recognizable sign on the side of the road. So there are some benefits that go beyond just health.

I'm still going fine without fast food, but I have a question, Do frosties count? I ended up having a one or two last month when the people I was with we're all like OMG let's get frosties, and I was oh yeah omg they make them with chocolate chip cookie dough now I have to have one and then I did. Then I did again when I was with another friend who didn't know about the chocolate chip cookie dough frosty and then a day or two later I was thinking, do frosties count as fast food????/
yeah, so do frosties count as fast food?

I don't eat a lot of fast food but sometimes i like the fries and chicken stips.

ha ha, i've read fast food nation and watched the documentary, along with a couple other industrialized food documentaries. the only thing i took away from them was "huh, we sure have a screwed up system. oh well, you can't fight city hall...yes, I'd like a number 2 combo, no cheese"
I do try to pick healthier options when i go out to eat and sometimes get on a kick where i'll go for like 2 weeks eating on food cooked at home. But i'm not going to pretend that i'm too good to eat a cheeseburger and wash it down with a coke either. 11/8/2010 6:16:03 PM |
