I figured the transition would be over a few games, but to have a "concussion" occur after only one half...

well you know, during the course of having his head hit the ground, he hurt his jaw (which is something you can come back into the game with) and also was concussed. After going through a battery of tests, which the nfl is big on nowadays (I'm sure you didnt know that though), they discovered he also had a concussion.

You can have more than one injury, the concussion is the reason he's not in the game
