Turner is becoming quite the RBI beast.
And 8-4 in the last 12 games...and only one of those losses was by more than 2 runs.

i would like interleague more if we didn't play the yankees 6 times every year while other teams get off so much easier.
we got so close to .500 and now we'll likely lose at least 2 if not all 3 this weekend. 5/20/2011 2:39:00 AM |

Re: Reyes' obp.
He isn't the best obp leadoff guy (neither was/is Rollins) but among leadoff hitters he is #2 in the last five years at scoring position % so his lower obp doesn't hurt his ability to contribute runs relative to his peers.

The Braves play Boston 6 times a year and Boston is a better team so you need to be more specific with your whining. Yeah it is not fair to anyone else in the NL East that the Phillies play Toronto except the Nats who get the Os. The Marlins have more of a gripe than the Mets this year too having to play the Rays. Yankees are not really a good team if you have not noticed.5/21/2011 10:45:50 AM |

Quote : | "New York Mets principal owner Fred Wilpon takes pointed shots at some of his marquee players in an extensive article in The New Yorker mostly designed to highlight his rags-to-riches tale.
The embattled owner, who became ensnared in Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme and is now being sued for more than $1 billion by the trustee trying to recover funds for Madoff victims, tells the magazine:
• Shortstop Jose Reyes will not be getting a super-huge contract from the Mets. "He thinks he's going to get Carl Crawford money," Wilpon says, referring to Crawford's seven-year, $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. "He's had everything wrong with him. He won't get it."
• On right fielder Carlos Beltran, Wilpon mentions Beltran's huge postseason with the Houston Astros in 2004 and says, referring to himself: "We had some schmuck in New York who paid him based on that one series. He's 65 to 70 percent of what he was."
• About David Wright, Wilpon said: "Really good kid. A very good player. Not a superstar."
• On whether the franchise might be snakebit, Wilpon makes another pointed Beltran reference. Author Jeffrey Toobin writes: "At one point, I mentioned to Wilpon the theory that the Mets might be cursed. He gave a sort of half laugh, and said, 'You mean' -- and then pantomimed a checked swing of the bat. Any Mets fan (I am one) would understand the reference. The Mets took the 2006 National League Championship Series to a seventh game against the Cardinals."
In the game Wilpon refers to, Beltran took a called third strike from Adam Wainwright to end it.
Wilpon apparently does like first baseman Ike Davis.
"Good hitter," Wilpon says of Davis. "S----- team. Good hitter. ... We're snakebitten, baby."" |

I'm confused as to why any owner would do this. I mean even Mark Cuban and George Steinbrenner think this interview was a bad idea.
Is there really any surprise that the Mets are a five-year long joke with this clown owning the team?

Minaya is a schmuck but Beltran also was, by far, the best center fielder in baseball for a long time.

I think the point is, traditionally the Yankees are the best AL East team. Maybe the Rays or Red Sox are having a better season right now. But, since interleague play started in 1997 no other franchise has been as consistent as the Yankees. The Rays finished better than dead fucking last in the AL East once prior to 2008, and the Marlins surely weren't complaining about playing them back then when the Rays were consistently on of the worst AL teams (The Marlins hold the NL's best interleague record at 127–107).

NY and Chicago are the only cities where that's even a legit argument. No one in Los Angeles really gives a shit about baseball or sports in general.
You think Orioles fans get pumped about playing the Nationals? Rangers/Astros or Marlins/Rays is big time?
It ruins the schedule and can cost teams the wild card or even the division. It's good for revenue because it's still a novelty, but MLB needs to find a way to strike a balance between interleague and even schedules.
MLB commissioner Ernie would get rid of it all together, but that's never going to happen.

^^^^You're right. Interleague play (the way the rivalries are set up, at least) is not fair. I like interleague play because you get to see match-ups that you don't normally get the chance to see. I think that it needs to be tweaked. But the idea is one that I like.
^^^I know the Rays lack of success in their early years hold no bearing on the difficulty of the Marlins' match-up with them this season. You are correct. But the point was, it's not fair that some teams have interleague 6 games locked into their schedule against a playoff team every single year, when other teams are playing 6 games against a team that is consistently bad (the O's, for example). I'm not opposed to the Mets playing the Yankees in interleague play. I am opposed to the Mets playing the Yankees (or any team for that matter) 6 times during interleague play. No need for two series against one team from the AL.

The Cardinals play the Royals six times a year...how does that not upset fans in Houston, Cincinnati, and Chicago when their "rivalry" games have been against way better opponents?
I would rather see a standard rotation just like NFC vs AFC games...it would be harder to work out because of the NL Central and AL West not having the same number of teams as everyone else, but it would be more fair for each team to play the same opponents as others in their own division. 5/23/2011 11:05:54 PM |

If we trade Reyes, I'm tuning out for a year or two. If you can't afford a homegrown player in his prime who is that good, then you can't afford a New York City sports franchise.
The infield starters tonight? Murphy, Turner, Tejada and Harris. That wouldn't even win in AAA. Good thing the Pirates are AA.

This is fucking crazy. They are 27 and 28 years old. Extend them. Don't trade them. Build around them. For christ's sake, if you can't afford to pay your players, sell the team. It's New York City.
Einhorn can afford them. If the Wilpon's can't they need to leave. And yes, I realize each has flaws but they are each top five players at their positions. You build around those.
And fuck writers for thinking that David Wright isn't a great player. He has had ONE down year in eight. ONE. Just because he is a Mets player doesn't mean he sucks. I know it's trendy to bash everything Mets, but it's retarded.

but way to go Mets! taking 2 out of 3 from the braves without Wright or Davis in the lineup, and Beltran out for most of today's game.
