if the OP was it was likely either unrelated to trans identity or a reaction to it, like a father or step-father concerned that his son isn't manly enough and worried he'll become a faggot

So let me ask you a question that has boggled my mind for a while.

If you are a shemale and like chicks, does that make you gay or straight?

Admitting to *anyone* that you have gender identity issues is a huge deal even if that person is a therapist. You say that people shouldn't be congratulating her on coming out and then show a complete lack of knowledge about TG people and the transition process.

No one is encouraging her to go "get her dick cut". The entire process begins with psychological therapy from a trained gender dysphoria councilor and usually doesn't progress beyond that point for many months, usually up to an entire year. In some cases this time is shortened if the person has had plenty of experience presenting themselves as the other gender to the outside world (e.g. RachelMarie's friend from Legends). Even then, the process will take months before any further medical action is taken.

Once that happens the individual needs to seek out yet another psychologist as well as a psychiatrist to write letters stating that the person is gender dysphoric and is a good candidate to switch genders. At that point usually the TG in question is referred to a Endocrinologist to start hormone therapy. If they haven't already they start beard removal treatment (which takes years and is often the longest part of transitioning), voice training, and other treatments.

The majority of TGs do not have SRS until about three years after starting this process. It isn't even considered a necessary option by many TGs.. the line can be drawn anywhere. Some people (after seeking therapy) are perfectly happy to simply dress or act in a slightly more feminine way. Some people seek to go through transitioning to the point of SRS and then stop. Some people decide to have SRS. Plus any other point you could think of so that the person's issues are addressed.

No one here is saying Catch 22 shouldn't seek therapy. Infact she won't get very far at all without going through a whole lot of therapy.

what would i think of a person like that? well i've met many effeminate men and i don't think any better or worse of them then a "manly" man. i would say that an effeminate man is a lot more "normal" then a transgender woman who is attracted to females. i guess i'm a bit confused and i will concede that i will never understand how you feel but i have to ask, if you have the anatomy of a man and you are attracted to women then what is it that makes you "feel" like a woman? why do you consider yourself a transgender person?

No, it isn't even close to being in every plastic. It was only a residual in certain polycarbonates (not PE, PET, PP, etc: all of the numbered plastics 1-6 aren't in the category of PCs) and has been largely eliminated from modern water bottles and baby bottles, etc.

People really need to learn some polymer chemistry and stop freaking out about what really only might have been a very minimal exposure risk.

I honestly don't think it would have "caused" anything in your case.

"uprooting it" is closer to what SRS is like than "cutting it off"

and it is rather offensive to combine the words "cut" and "off" in the presence of an MTF: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjqsB1huDxg#t=07m10s

Who give's a fuck what offends them?!? They knew what they were getting into before they chopped their dick off. That's like me cutting off my own legs and then getting mad when people make fun of me for being crippled.

Do whatever the fuck you want with your own body, but don't go around throwing a pity party and demanding others to act a certain way so as not to offend you!

That article is from 1995. I mean, I don't necessarily disagree with you and I wouldn't be surprised if it came out (pun intended) that some people were more genetically predisposed than others to be homosexual, but at least provide something more up to date than a TIME article from 15 years ago. :\ It's still a very, very controversial topic in genetics and people are still trying to find testable methods to find any substantial evidence in humans.

As far as feeling like "something isn't right," it's not all about nurture. Nature plays a very big role in it all. For example, there was a case study about two twin boys that were followed from infancy to their teenage years. They were having a normal circumcision performed when something went wrong with one of the twins, and he eventually lost his penis. The parents had to make a choice, so they chose reconstructive surgery and the child was given hormone therapy to look like a girl. Cut to the teen years - the boy was the football star and the girl was a cheerleader... the parents did everything in their power to provide an environment in which to raise a girl. She never felt right, and finally was told she was in fact born as a boy (I believe the girl kept mentioning the confusing thoughts she had, etc). That girl ended up getting reconstructive surgery to turn back to a boy. (There was a paper done on it, if anyone really wants to read about the case I can ask my teacher for the author's name.)

This video also shows that genetics don't play a 100% role, like there's a pair of identical twin men and one is gay and the other is straight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJcDXk2JUwQ

also there's a pair of fraternal twin boys, one of whom is gender-normative and the other of whom is gender-variant, and the video fails to mention that the girly-boy is far more likely to turn out trans than gay

[Edited on November 15, 2010 at 7:59 PM. Reason : also there's the older-brother effect, one of the most solid conclusions in the field

Genetics RARELY plays "a 100% role" in general.

You're more likely to have a situation of multifactorial inheritance (genes + environment) going on than a single gene causing something.

David Rheimer also said in later interviews that the professor that was overseeing their case basically molested them. The guy that lost his penis later killed himself.

ok I actually listened to that podcast I mentioned a while ago and it turns out Translabyrinth merely switched the numbers; actually about 1 in 12000 people who were born male are MTF and 1 in 30000 born female are FTM

also the associated article is enlightening: http://health.howstuffworks.com/sexual-health/sexuality/gender-reassignment.htm/printable

Yeah I might look up one... there were a few other example the guest speaker (doctor specializing in sex determination) brought up, but I remember that the most. I guess another situation you could look at for nature sometimes out-winning nurture is when kids with a chromosomal make-up show, for example, a girl but the child has such ambiguous genitalia they would give the kid hormone therapy to seem like a boy

In other news, seeing as he was an expert on the sexes I asked him if Jamie Lee Curtis really has Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome... he said he thinks she does, so I feel content on that subject now. I've been searching for answers man

Explain this.

Quote :
"Seems like to me, that social gender (not whether you consider yourself a girl or guy, but whether you are feminine or masculine) is completely separate from sexuality and biological sex.

Considering yourself to be a "guy" or a "girl" is arbitrary and (except for society) unnecessary.
If one is masculine, one shouldn't assume that that has anything to do with identifying as a male.
If one is feminine, one shouldn't assume that that has anything to do with identifying as a female.

For instance, an effeminate heterosexual male (identifies with feminine things, is effeminate, etc.) shouldn't have to feel that he needs to identify as a female. Why can't he just be an effeminate heterosexual male? (I know that society rejects that, but are we letting society call the shots?)

Why would he feel the need to join the [ultimately arbitrary] male-female dichotomy by becoming [closer to] a biological female? (By cutting off his dick.) Why not simply embrace one's actual gender, forgetting all expectations towards its relationship to biological sex?

I mean, we have tom-boys, and we don't expect them to be lesbian or to have penises...
So why can't we have ladymen? (or something)... who dress like and do girly things, have sex with girls, but keep their dicks?

Why would someone need to have different genitalia? (If not for the arbitrary gender role pushed upon them by society)"
