I loved that gym. Rarely had trouble getting a treadmill (except the day after holidays). Plenty of machines, all of them new (gym is maybe 3 years old). It has a squat rack IIRC. No rowing machines though. I haven't been there in a year and a half so my info might be out of date. begonias used to be a PT there, she might know more.

I would be weary of these deals. It smells of "WE NEED CASH FLOW NOW!"

I had thought about that, but it seems the worst that could happen is I show up one day and it's closed and I'm out some portion of my $13 dues. I could deal with that. I did plan on checking the place out before signing up though. Fortunately I have a little time to pick a new gym.

I will start this challenge as well. I plan on running two tri's this year (one in May and one in June) and doing the Marine Corps marathon again. My goal is still to complete an Ironman by the time I'm 30.

We started Insanity month two and I've been logging my food intake again. For some reason, I seemed to lose a lot more bf when I did this (logged food). Guess it would force me to eat enough food so that my metabolism didn't slow down.

[Edited on January 4, 2011 at 2:21 PM. Reason : I almost threw up this morning from the workout. It was that intense. Haven't done that since OCS.]

i've started doing some yoga-type workouts for the last couple of weeks and it's definitely the way to get me to keep with a schedule because there is no schedule! i just do it for 20 min here and there, and i try and do it anytime i'm watching tv instead of just sitting on the couch. i think it's also great because you aren't worried about sets and numbers, instead i find a motion to repeat for about 2-4 minutes and concentrate on just my breathing. i also add in small dumbbells when i can for strength. last but not least, i have yet to feel ANYTHING resembling soreness in any area of my body (even when i do back and neck stretches) even though i do it to the point of muscle exhaustion.

i'll post before and present pics later if i get a chance

ive been extra good about my water intake.
ive been giving myself 2 sodas a day (even though today someone got me a 44 ounce one ...so i guess i have 3 today...but ive had 2 bottles of water already so its ok )

and for those who may not no-2 sodas a day is about 1/5 of my normal intake

"162 and change. I still feel like my body is catching up with itself. I weighed under 130 last november (hell 125 in september 09, shocking really) . I feel I can make it to 170 easily enough but my bone structure is so small I might not push for anything further. Its getting to be a lot of extra weight at this point. Are you feeling the same way shadowrunner? You may not be as ectomorph dominate as me. I've never met anyone with a smaller.....wrist.

Diet has been hardly any fast food. Been cooking healthy at home with the gf primarily. If i don't swim or play ball I don't need to eat but ~3,000 calories. Primarily rice, beans, chicken, bagels, and whole milk. Thanks for the beans tip porcha.

Oh but I took up coffee. Is it bad for me? I don't use much sugar due to my pre diabetic scare last summer (was during a month long smoothie binge....strawberrys and yogurt just seemed so right)."

I've actually been very successful since I started working with a dietitian at my gym; I've put on 7-8 pounds in the last month, although holiday sweets and freakish rains out here that discouraged me from running and biking as much as usual definitely helped my calorie surplus, so it's not all "good" gains. But you're absolutely right that it feels like extra weight, and I'm still getting used to it; I definitely feel every extra pound that I'm carrying when I run, and I consider it a gain that I'm still able to do the same number of reps of chin-ups and pull-ups with the extra weight.

I've got very small wrists, too, and small joints in general. But if you've already put on 35+ pounds in the last year and a half, then yeah, maybe you are at the point that's healthy for you and should try to slow down a bit. Have you talked to a dietitian or another professional about a healthy fit weight for you, not only taking your height into account but also your frame, metabolism and activity level? One difference is that I'm 6'7", so maybe hitting 170 for me is more like hitting 155 or so for you.

A "normal" weight for an athletic person my height would be around 220, but there's no possible way I could hit that in any healthy way. I'm nominally shooting for about 180, but that's based on an expectation that adding 15-20 pounds of muscle will give me a lot more strength and endurance and allow me to complete an Ironman.

Do you have a particular goal that's defined functionally like that? Why is it that you have 170 as a target right now? I think it's important, for me at least, to view my weight as either a means to an end or a corollary to an end, rather than the end goal itself. Right now I'm 1) still making strength gains every week in the weight room, and 2) still dissatisfied with my current functional strength and core stability, so I keep eating massive amounts to support adding more muscle mass. Once 2) no longer holds, I won't care about gaining more weight, or once 1) no longer holds, I'll need a new strategy; at that point, I'll reevaluate my diet and stop shoveling 3700 calories down my gullet every day.

I honestly chose 170 because it was 10 from 160 (which was 10 from 150, which was 10 from 140 etc..).

No dietitian. No means to an end for me either. I'm sucks ok?

I'm surprised you drink so much soda given your fitness level/goals Joie. I used to drink ~50 sodas per week. But now I let myself have 2 a day as well. I'm gonna try to get down to 1 per day, but it's tough. Much harder than quitting smoking

Ran 9 miles yesterday and 6 miles today.

Perhaps I should join LunaK in the 500 mile running challenge for 2011.

Also, are y'all talking about 2 servings, cans or bottles of soda? I'm intrigued.

Did a 5k run, hated every second of it. I can't just not do it though if I want to be in proper shape for tri season. It will be nice when I buy my indoor trainer and I can bike regardless of weather. <3 cycling, hate running.

Diet Dr. Pepper is delish. And diet ginger ale is my mixer of choice. Though some reports indicate that diet sodas could make people gain more weight. le sad

My guilty caffeinated pleasure is espresso. I drink two to four shots of espresso every morning. That maxes out my caffeine allowance for the day. With a splash of half n half. Should prob switch to skim, right? Is it that big of a deal?

At the rate you're going you'll hit it in no time.

If you ran 4 miles 3 times a week that's 4 x 3 x 52 = 624.

this has something to do with your body not being able to recognize calories.
if you drink tons of something sweet but you don't get any energy from it, youre likely to over indulge when the real thing is around.
that and i think theres a correlation between sweetners and water retention.

Quinn I didn't realize you still weighed so little until recently. I haven't seen you in a while but you still looked more filled out than when we had class together in 2005.

I posted this at the end of the 2010 thread. I got up to 179 in November while bulking (I was about 166 in July) and now I'm back to 174. My waist had gotten up to 38 inches and now it's at about 35.5" according to the tape measure. I want to maintain in a range between 172 - 176 for the foreseeable future. I don't have a gym membership but I've been working out two and sometimes three times a week.

I try to keep my calories under 2500 per day. I don't need to watch everything I eat. I can have good tasting, bad for you stuff as long as I don't binge.

hahhaha yeah buddy I was super thin back in those days. I've gained 40lbs and my waist hasn't even moved a half inch. I can still myspace angle a six pack. I'm going to overshoot 170 a few pounds and then lean back to really low body fat again. The only nice part of being ecto is the leaning aspect. Oh it's time to eat!!!!!!

where do you lift ray?

Thanks for sending the spreadsheet. Makes it a lot easier to count down. This rocks!

I attempted to teach myself not to fear power cleans yesterday. I only hit myself in the face with the bar twice So I have the next month to work on 1) not doing that and 2) keeping my elbows up when catching the bar. So hopefully I can make that happen.

Also, holy resolutionist swarm at the gym. I'm going to avoid going right after work during January.

Holy shit. That's all I have to add to this thread today.

Oh...and I'm finally going to get started on my "get back into peak shape" workout today. Taking a 2-hour lunch...going to run to the gym, workout, and run back (it's about 3 miles to the gym). Then going to go for a 5-mile run after work.

I've got to get back into heavy cardio. The older I get, the more lean muscle I want to have. I moved away from heavy weights and low reps years ago, now I want to slowly fade away from most weights altogether. More pull-ups and push-ups, less dumbells and benches. We'll see how it goes. After being a consistent weight lifter for 8 years, I'll see if I can actually give it up.

^ You should train for a half-marathon or a full if you're going to be logging that many miles on the pavement. There are some good ones in your neck of the woods. Kiawah Island is supposed to be a phenomenal race. Of course, it's not until December: http://www.kiawahresort.com/recreation/marathon/

Yep. Happens every year. Turrible stuff.

^^My dad is what, 56 or so, and he just upgraded his home gym and still pumps iron every chance he gets . I don't think I'll ever give it up.

--

I've been real lazy the past few days and haven't done any weight lifting. Being extremely tired from bad sleep plus being sore from a good workout kinda does that to me. I'm feeling great today so I think I'll get in there.

For cardio I might do some fitness classes with the Kinect. Girlfriend and I have been playing it more regularly and its pretty fun, though we wish there could be on-screen multiplayer rather than taking turns.

Skwinkle, F19 does have a row machine and a squat rack. It's a pretty basic gym but every now and then they add something cool/new. And as far as I know, they've never closed a gym. The Cary location used to be run by the owner's daughter (the owner of fitness19) so there's no way he's going to let that one close.

If you're looking to talk to a trainer, ask for Jason. He is not only a great trainer, but a wonderful person all around. Tell him I said hi

Sweet. That might be right up my alley then. I thought I was going to love the classes at LFF but then only did them a few times, and I don't use weight machines or anything so don't really care if they don't have a ton of that kind of stuff. Thanks!

I've tried to do longer distances and I think I could do it physically...but I honestly can't get past 6 or 7 miles without getting incredibly bored. I'm also uber-competitive, and I don't think I could put in killer times in a half marathon.

I can still place in some smaller 5Ks and put up some respectable 10K times...but I'll be disappointed in a half-marathon.

My mom's husband was a competitive body-builder and he's in his early 50s and still looks like The Hulk. I just don't really have the desire to go in and pump a lot of iron anymore. I'm shorter, so I look better with leaner muscle and lifting weights has gotten a little mundane over the past few years. My sister is now an official cross-fit trainer, so I've contemplated getting into that, but a lot of that is a little too hard-core for me as well.

I think I'll definitely be going the yoga route and supplement it with some very light lifting at some point, just not quite there yet

Ashtanga yoga is pretty intense. After a class, I feel like I need to . I don't think it's safe to operate heavy machinery after a class.

Hot yoga/Bikram (not always the same thing) is really addictive, but Ashtanga is better for overall strength. People who do it always look very fit. Hot yoga is pretty from a detox perspective.

Also, just want to mention that detox is well underway for me and it feels great so far. Basically, in 2010, I had between one and two glasses of wine every night, as well as the occasional binge drinking fest. I'm pretty sure that was contributing to slower run times, so my goal is to drink just once or twice per week.

So far, I haven't had a drink since a champagne toast on NYE. Tonight is a friend's bday party, so I'm having my first drink of 2011 since the champagne toast.

^^That's pretty awesome about your mom's husband. Just sayin you might be addicted to the iron and need it again eventually, haha. A crossfit type of workout might be good for the future when you've gotten your endurance up with all the running you will be doing. That or other cardio weightlifting programs/workouts.
