I could hear Lowe on the t.v. all game yelling at the team. At least I guess he is trying to keep his job. It seemed like we were running a new offense most of the second half, some type of triangle thing at the top of the key. Glad to see they are trying something different.

I was surprised this wasn't brought up earlier. I also hate how whoever is playing point almost always dribbles to the shoulder (on the bench side on either end of the court) when starting a halfcourt set.

It appears that this is how our half-court set starts every time. The point guard is doing what he is being coached to do.

- PG dribbles to the upper left shoulder so that he can drive right while dribbling with his strong hand.
- Looks for Smith posting up on strong side.
- If it's not open, wait for the screen and dribble towards the middle of the court and look for an opening in the lane.
- Look for the pick-n-roll
- If it's not open, swing the ball around the perimeter and try to feed the post on the other side.

That's the main set. We also have motion with the give and go (yesterday) and flex. Anyway, this is dumb. People talk too much about offense. The offense is fine.

The defense and rebounding are what lets us down when we lose. If you are a good team, you score a good amount of your points from defense and rebounding, not half court offense. Rebounds and steals lead to easy fast break points. Also add in free throws.

To win, you need to get more possessions than your opponent. If you score in the half court 60% of the time and your opponent only scores 50% of the time, out of 70 half court possessions, you will only be up 42-35. That 7 point difference is easily erased by points off of offensive rebounds (80% probability of converting), steals, and fast break points. Add in differences in free throw shooting percentage, and you have a bunch of stuff that isn't offense that contributes to scoring.


How often do you see duke convert a bad shot or bad 3 by the opponent into a fast break dunk or fast break 3 pointer? That's a 5 or 6 point swing in the game. That's what makes an offense potent and efficient. Use good defense to get plays that create huge swings in the score.

We start off games cold, and we don't have the defense or rebounding to stop the other team from opening up a 10+ point lead. Instead of creating 5-6 point swings, we give up 5-6 point swings.

We see that a lot in our close losses. Some freshman takes a dumbass shot, gives up a fast break bucket, and we never recover the rest of the game. Our defense is not capable of generating the same type of play for us. We play defense to "hold serve."

^Put more simply we suck at forcing turnovers. I did see an interesting wrinkle in the Wake game on defense. We were actually attempting (and being fairly successful) ball denial on the wing. If we can keep doing that with legitimate teams it would help a lot.
