Thought this was funny this weekend:
I joined an alumni softball league in DC. We played Clemson Friday night. After the game, we were drinking with Clemson's team at the bar, and they were saying how they'd been to Raleigh, enjoyed the city and our stadium, etc, and we should go to Clemson for a game someday.
They were saying how they pride themselves on being welcoming of visiting fans. So I say State fans are welcoming for the most part too unless you're from Maryland or UNC.
The Clemson guy goes, "Oh yeah that's right. Maryland is the worst. Fuck those guys." 5/8/2011 11:56:03 AM |

I would hope that on Monday's sports talk radio shows people will criticize Maryland's blunderous coaching search and just make up rumors about other coaches who have already turned them down

There's two hosts. Whenever there's any kind of topic with two sides, one of them zigs and the other zags. The go back and forth, and then take calls where folks agree with one or the other.
That's how you fill three hours of daily radio.5/8/2011 1:04:56 PM |

Quote : | "What we have here is the same thing we had in late December. This is the basketball version. Can't get Miller, Brey realizes he is the 3-4-5 choice and says I'm staying at my football school. We had no business wasting time with Dixon or Wright anyway. Don't show your hand so fast Necktie....for you will be doing this many times over the next 5-8 years and I hope you learn from these situations. For us to go from good to great you have to be great yourself. Our next coach did not have to be from the Big East or PAC 10 but a solid recruiter and X and O's man. Basketball is not college football. This is a debacle at this point as expected. GW is gone, a memory and all the Message Board Warriors will say is A) GW is overated and past his prime B) he left the program in bad shape and C) he announced this too late and screwed us. Maybe so but Necktie is screwing you harder and harder with each move he makes. Oh and of course D) This is all GW's fault because he never recruited anyone and if he had we would have been getting a better coach now, Point the finger at the Necktie and not GW, for he won a NC and went to two FF's and did a lot more than you give him credit for at UMD. But you get what you get.......now all the haters applaud Necktie and sell this one please..." |

It's the only top-flight job that's almost sure to open up within the next five or so years. Plus it's a small private school like Butler and is a magnet for five-star nerdy-ass white dudes.5/8/2011 10:05:11 PM |

Duke is obviously on the elite side of the top tier teams but at least 3, possibly 4 Top 10 programs should be in the market in the coming 5-7 years. Duke, Louisville, UConn and possibly UNC (how long does Roy plan on staying?)
I highly doubt Stevens has any designs on leaving Butler though for any of those.

Duke or UNC, to be sure. I don't know that Duke would be the top job though simply because UNC has less stringent admission standards (will Duke's next coach get away with sliding a guy who can't read like Dockery in? Remains to be seen..). Now that SHOULDN'T matter but I'm sure it does. 5/8/2011 10:11:19 PM |

^^also, why did they say they had it all figured out and were prepared for it when they clearly have blundered? Len Elmore will be the next coach, just like the Lowe search...only Lowe didn't have a law degree, unfortunately for his son.
but seriously, who is Maryland going to get this late? GW might have sucker punched the school on this one

Quote : | "This search is completely different. NC State knew they were going to fire Lowe for weeks and had time to prepare. They did their search right at the start of the coaching offseason. Gary quit right when everything was settled and with no notice. It makes it a MUCH more difficult situation now that everything had settled and everything was done. Not a comparable situation at all. Its really beneath us to even listen to folks comparing the two situations or schools.
If Gary quit at the end of March, Sean Miller probably has already got a few verbals for us by now. " |
I really hope they get somebody worse than Lowe and they suck balls for the next decade. How the fuck were we in an ideal situation to lure away a big name coach by firing Lowe? We sucked ass for the last 5 years and they had a hall of fame coach who suddenly retired- both situations suck equally. If anything, having to wait until the end of the NCAA tourney made it harder to contact anyone to even set up negotiations in the first place. If they really were as storied as a program as they think they are, they should have had zero problems landing anybody worth a damn...Oh wait, that sounds soooo familiar.... I'm just glad we went through this first and landed a better hire than they probably will. This holier-than-thou shit blows my mind.
The truth is, Sean Miller wasn't going anywhere, and they got played for a raise. PERIOD.
