I forgot I had an 8800, so maybe I'll join a pool just for fun. Apparently, all the high end cards are getting bought up by miners.

I'm also fantasizing about writing a trading bot and reading up on SHA-256.

I too have a spare computer with a video card. At the current rate uncovering a block will net you 1000 bucks (50 BTC). Time to start mining

Okay, face.

What does it mean when the bid price is a $1 away from the ask price. That's a pretty steep gap.

Just curious, is anyone else doing this??

My deposit from the 8th JUSSSSST came in. And I guess so did a lot of other people because at 5pm CST bitcoins just shot up $3.

I might buy in at 4:59 pm CST every day.

That is a really steep gap.

That most likely indicates people are concerned about the extreme volatility right now.

Volatility is typically an indicator of bear markets as bull markets tend to be more stable.

What about this scenerio:

Someone made a huge purchase and bought up all the bids at a dollars' length.

thats possible if someone is too stupid to use a limit order, but that would likely be a very short term spread in the market.

Are there marketmakers? That could be fairly profitable assuming you are allowed to be net short a position (not sure if you are)

Nope, you're not allowed to short it. You can only buy/sell.

dumb question for you GeniuSxBoY

if I were to place a bid above the ask price, I would have my order satisfied immediately, right? is there a delay in this process and does it require manual intervention on my part? I think you said it was fully automatic.

If the lowest asking price was $16 for 100 shares

And you bid $17 for 100 shares

Then you will get all the 100 $16 shares even though you bid $17.

-------------------------------------------

If the lowest asking price was $16 for 50 shares
and the next asking price is $16.01 for 25 shares
and the next asking price is $16.50 for 50 shares

And you bid $17 for 100 shares

Then you with get all the 50 $16 shares, the 25 $16.01 shares, and 25 of the $16.50 shares to complete your order.

If the asking price is $20 a share like it is right now, you can put a bid in for $10.50 and if the market dives while you're sleeping, then it'll automatically fill your order.

I mean if you're literally gambling an asset then why not. If you're investing, picking some arbitrarily far away strike and actually having it trigger but not go a whole lot lower and go back up is about as likely as winning the lottery.

Hmm, I realize this. It's a gamble.

But bitcoin is brand new and here to stay. People are even selling them on EBAY already and making/losing money. Market goes up and down too violently to tell.

tell me if this is stupid. I know nothing about investing.

it seems like there is a lot of volatility. many times per day, the price will drop more than 10% and very shortly shoot back up. would it be impossible to take advantage of these constant dips?

Quite possible. Create an account and every day keep a bid order at what you think is the low for the day and an ask order at what you think is the high of the day. This is what is known as buying low and selling high. When you do this you are providing liquidity into the market, stabilizing it, and making money for yourself. As your bid and ask don't move you don't need to watch the market at all beyond 30 minutes every morning. Just come back the next day and see if the market hit your numbers and reset your orders.

O RLY?

I actually would do this with a bot if possible and buy/sell multiple times per day instead of once per day.

You don't need a bot. They provide the bot for you by simply letting you place orders far away from the current trade price. If the previous trade was at $20, you are allowed to place a bid order anywhere, say at $10, which will wait in the bid queue forever until the price shoots down to $10, at which point your account will wake up and make a trade.

It's pretty interesting how volatile and unpredictable this is and what's essentially affecting the market value.

I remember earlier this year when 50cent was tweeting about certain stocks and overnight the value increased by 300%. What if Scarlett Jo bought up a decent number of bitcoins during the next fall and then tweeted she would FDT for X amount donated to her charity (which only accepts one type of payment).

Or what if the guy that wrote the Gawker article exposing Silk Road [let's assume he had intimate knowledge of this underground connection well before 6/3] already had a stockpile from January and say he had someone watching the market 24/7; selling everything a week later at $30/ea?

And then a top page reddit article offering a plethora of bitcoins for something 4chan kiddies could do in their sleep. DDOS site xyz.com at a rate of XX coins/hr it's down.

Is this what you guys mean by manipulation?

I think a better example would be when the anonymous creator of the system, a guy who owns around 25% of the Bitcoins in existence, decides it's been fun running this ponzi scheme but it's time to cash out. He dumps his coins onto the market, possibly causing a crash, and uses the money to go start an underwater utopia called Rapture.

So I suppose you want to create some sort of actuarial model and buy or sell based on that. The tough thing is even after you make this model, you can still be wrong, or you can just be unlucky, from my experience we had more success using several of those models to analyze your portfolio risk rather than the market itself. You can easily change factors in your portfolio to make it fit into your model a bit better, you can't do that with the market, and unfortunately, since you're dealing with currency exchange, you can't do it at all. You could try to think of some opportunity for arbitrage, but I imagine the number of traders involved in this would have taken advantage of any opportunity if there were one.

So set your bid/ask orders and go away. check back tomorrow or next week how it went. If the price never shot down to $10 then your account will be unchanged.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear. I want to take advantage of constant dips, small dips in the market and not very rare, large dips.

^^^That's fine. I just wanted some argument against the idea. I'll probably just try it out for fun.

You want to do what I do lol. Buy and sell quickly.

Yes you can do this.

The only problem is that you never ever ever know what the market is going to do. If you buy at the lowest point you've ever seen it... there is a great possibility of it dropping even lower and never making back up for days, months, years, or never again.

Also, if you buy at $16 and it jumps to $20, you have to ask yourself "what if it goes higher?" if you wait too long it could drop below $16 again. If you cash out, it may jump to $30. I lost $300 by cashing out early. I'm not mad because I at least made some money. But since I cashed out, it hasn't come close to that $10.50 level

Well, I think the first case is a concern for everyone involved, no?

The second is tricky. But I'd probably cash out when it jumped back to nearly the level it was already at to begin with. For example, if it were to take a sharp dip $20->$16->$20, I'd buy around $18 and sell around $19.5. I would think better decisions could be made in real time based on depth of market. If it jumps up to $30, I'd wager there is plenty of volatility on the way up too. Again, this is probably just naivety on my part.

There are millions invested in the bitcoin market today, but there are probably going to be billions of dollars in the bitcoin market in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a $60 bubble.
