his last season was my freshman year, and i honestly did not enjoy that tournament. i thought we should've been better than we were all season, then we limped into the tournament and lost in the second round, very expectedly. it was really deflating.

obviously if we hadn't been to the tournament the last four seasons, it would've been more fun, but as it was i do not have fond memories of it.

before then it was absolutely nothing

those teams had talent and personality, even if their coach didn't

I know for a fact that they were happy when he left, so I was happy as well

but in the moment? it was awesome to have hope again after a lifetime of having none

Eh, no reason to kill Herb for his time here. He did absolutely nothing to hurt the program. In fact he did help it to go from a barren wasteland after the late 80's problems to a respectable national program. It's our AD's fault we didn't capitalize on the momentum we had built up and instead hired a guy in over his head.

This. I still have a couple friends who disagree with me about Herb needing to move on. And that's not even a criticism of Herb's work, sometimes its just time to make change and Herb wasn't a good fit for the program long term. Just because we botched the follow through doesn't mean it wasn't right to try and make an upgrade there.

which left us with 6 or 7 scholarship players, only 2 of which had any sort of previous meaningful playing time (atsur and grant)

I wasn't too excited about any of the 5 times we made the NCAAs. There was never a sense that Herb Sendek could do anything past making the tournament; never a sense the teams could make a deep run. It was less of a not meeting expectations thing, it was more of a frustration of doing exactly what the team was expected to do: blow leads, crap out in the first or second round, etc etc etc

* Chris Wright would have probably been the second best player Lowe coached behind JJ Hickson. He was a really good college player.

I don't know, but I'd venture to say that doing dumb shit things like giving Herb millions of dollars to go coach basketball at your school, then giving him extensions is probably not on the right track to get your student body to care about your basketball program.

Also not sure why anybody would even dismiss our fanbase as "just being assholes" regarding the controversy this dude caused here. Narrow-minded BS like that is what gets your basketball team scoring less in a half than the football squad.

I just think the dude is a good politician who had a good amount of people at this school fooled into believing that we had successful years based on things like making the NCAAs 5 years in a row. I'll give Sid the credit of at least being blatantly terrible at his job, instead of this mediocrity bullcrap that kept Herb around for around a decade.

It's not said enough that I think Herb made the majority of our "level-headed" fan base complacent in absolute mediocrity and that's why no one was willing to shake things up. Nobody believed how terrible of an actual coach he is.

Just can't get down with all that.

what a terrible hire herb was for asu. you couldn't hire an assistant away from cleveland state given the state of that team right now. there's no choice but to keep herb and hope he gets that team to the point that anyone in the country would willingly take it over before you can even fire the fucking guy.
