i bought the lost and the damned (after one of my students recommended it to me )... i played it a little but I haven't been able to get into it... i guess that's because i never really bought in to the whole GTA IV map.

that being said, i'm really looking forward to V. I hope they learn lessons from IV and make it awesome. so far is sounds like a lot of fun.

GTA 4 has a 98% Metacritic rating and sold over 20 million copies

http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/grand-theft-auto-iv
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_IV#Commercial_success

I think the main lesson they learned was "Holy shit, make more games like this"

well that sucks. I don't know of many serious GTA type folk who would say that 4 was an improvement over san andreas in anything but graphics.

At this point I'm assuming 4 was a test run for this generation's capabilities, and V will be the gameplay of SA mixed with the tech of 4.

God I hope so.

I did too. I mean to be honest I think 4 was the best of the series (followed closely by Vice City). As I said before I think Lost and the Damned was the best story of any in the series, mainly because I just really liked Johnny Klebitz as a character.

I didn't particularly enjoy the "man date" missions which seem to be a major complaint but in the DLC they both cut down on the necessity of those and made them more fun, so I think they will get rid of those at least.

i never played 4, but if you can't make your character an obese black man with blonde cornrows, i probably wouldn't like it.

I played GTA:SA through three times.

I quit 4 before I finished it once.

SA was alright but kind of lame.

Comparing SA to 4 is like comparing NCIS:LA to Homeland.

I must be a part of the minority because I didn't like San Andreas near as much as Vice City, that was my all time favorite. I thought there were way too many stupid missions in SA that made me lose interest.

Sleeping Dogs is the closest thing to San Andreas I've played in a long time, in terms of "fun" and playability.

GTA4 is underwhelming. So now I'm worried about GTA5.

Official release date: September 17

"
We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.

To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.

Yours,
The GTA Team"

i bought my PS3 for the sole purpose of playing GTA IV. (went with it over the xbox because of blu-ray)

fitting that GTA V will be the last game I buy for it.

I've beaten San Andreas three times now and every time I've maxed out on all stats, taken over all gang territories, and found all the stupid little collectibles. Every time I play this game I willingly spend hours swimming in a virtual ocean collecting oysters so that my character's respect stat will be high enough so people will suck his dick to do drive-bys for him. What I'm saying is that it's the goddamn pinnacle.

GTA4 is overrated as fuck and doesn't deserve anything close to the metascore it got. Every time I see that game in the top 10 of all time (numbers-wise) it reeks of injustice and is one of the reasons I take game reviews VERY lightly. I actually REALLY liked GTA4........but only up through the first borough. Once Dimitri takes over as your nemesis the game drags on forever and gets so fucking tedious and repetitive. I put the game down and finally finished months later but by that time I didn't care about the story at all. San Andreas had a VERY diverse environment, a GREAT cast, great music, a passable story (although who gives a shit in GTA), airplanes, and most of all VARIED FUCKING MISSIONS. This was a game where you could Solid Snake your way into a top-secret government facility and steal a jetpack. If that isn't gangsta enough for you, you could Solid Snake your way onto a government ship and steal a fucking harrier jet. The best GTA4 had to offer was a botched bank robbery mission with that loudmouthed shitfuck Packie. Fuck that.

In hindsight, my opinion is that GTA4 was nothing more than a grand exercise in acquainting Rockstar with the new generation of hardware and making a living, breathing virtual city. They succeeded. They just didn't put anything fucking fun in it. They redeemed themselves with Red Dead Redemption since, in my opinion, it was a fun game and they already had the technical experience from GTA4. Therefore, I'm hoping GTA5 is the culmination of all of that experience into a game that will kick my fucking ass into next week and steal my car while doing so.

well put...i think most rational people agree GTA:SA was FAR superior to GTA4, in everything except graphics...hopefully Rockstar will make a GTA:SA type epic game, with the graphics of GTA4, which if executed properly, could literally be the best video game ever

QFT

Not only that, but I enjoyed being able to customize the look of CJ. Play one game as fat albert, one game as an ethiopian, one game as Arnold Schwarzzeneger, etc.

Agreed on the San Andreas/GTA4 comments. I never did finish GTA4. I actually picked it up the other day for the first time in a couple years, but ended up just messing around for 15 minutes then turning it off.
