some positives and negatives to take from this game.

We need to get better fast to make the tournament, but we definitely have a shot.

i am so used to seeing us hit a big shot and then fail to get down the court defensively and give a basket right back. it feels GREAT to see us on the other end of that for once. i hope to see more of that.

Lorenzo had 9 assists and 8 steals. Only 3 turnovers.

Painter and Howell had double doubles I believe. Howell had 15 boards.

Tyler Harris looked smooth. Will be able to give us some decent fill in minutes this year.

CJ Williams quietly lead us with 18 points. I honestly don't know where he got his 18 from...a damn quiet 18, lol.

What's with pack_bryan pulling some Big4Country shit in here?

Game was probably closer than it should have been, but I'll take a win with an eighth of our roster ineligible.

- Offense definitely has better motion
- Fast break looks worlds better. We actually are a threat to score out of it
- Handled the press confidently. Good to have Johnson out there to help handle the ball
- Shooters are streaky outside of Wood
- Our bigs are not very skilled offensively. We are a long way from Tracy Smith, Ben McCauley, Hodge
- Tyler Harris is going to be a star. No fear. Maybe our most skilled frontcourt player
- Rebounding didn't look outstanding considering the competition.
- Defense looked like shit. Perimeter defense is still as bad as ever. Other team gets penetration and that causes everything to break down. The other team is allowed to pass the ball as they wish

33.6% of our scoring machine not even playing. i'll take this. not bad at all.

i already feel like we've begun a new era.

good rebounding too.

Wait a minute. So we aren't complaining or saying its not really a problem or that there's nothing to see or that everyone does stuff like this so that makes it ok?

I guess we just done follow The Carolina Way.

no, the problem is that if the ncaa decides that we played w/ an ineligible player then we have to forfeit the games. we can risk it and play him if we want.

at least i'm assuming that's the situation here, i haven't read anything, but that's what usually happens.

^^ It happens with tons of European players.

I'd be more worried about that shit with the $1300 than about TdT.

I think the worse thing that could happen with the $1300 thing is that we forfeit an Old Spice Championship

i'm pleased with tonights performance overall. we beat a tourney team from last year with 2 senior guards (the strength of their team - which i know aren't acc quality, but still veteran) with a short bench and some foul trouble.

it was good to see some hustle and some transition baskets. d needs to improve though.

Gott is fun to watch on the sideline. The best was yelling "That is BULLSHIT" at the ref at the other end of the court.

Yup good pickup for us that will be here 3-4 years. Good to know in case CJL leaves. Nice signing Lowe.

We were having a lot of problems with our bigs being forced to guard smaller players on the perimeter. I guess that is why we spent so much time in a zone in the 2nd half (that or Gott trying to play some zone against some decent competition in case we need it in the future).

not a bad write-up by PI!!!!

Quote :
"Tonight’s 84-75 victory over UNC-Asheville was the beginning of a new era for NC State basketball. Newly appointed head coach Mark Gottfried promised that this team would move at a quicker pace…and they did. The Wolfpack was itching to get out on the run, scoring 23 points on the break. The fast pace is new for this group, which was evident from the 14 turnovers. Gottfried has also preached that this team would be in tremendous shape and play aggressive defense. His players practiced what he preached tonight. NC State seemed to be in constant motion, clogging the passing lanes, resulting in a high number of deflections. Wolfpack fans had to be encouraged by the energy and charisma that this team played with tonight.

There were a lot of things to like about tonight and also some concerns as well.

Positives

CJ Williams – Williams stands out like as the smartest player on this team. His advanced knowledge of this new system is obvious. CJ constantly seems to be in the right position. Tonight he let the game come to him and managed to be the most productive and efficient player on the court. Williams led all scorers with 18 points, shooting an insane 80% (8-10) from the field, playing in all but 2 minutes of the game.

Rebounding Machines – Richard Howell and DeShawn Painter were all over the glass tonight. Both players managed to produce double-doubles. Howell led all players with 15 rebounds, and scored 14 points as well. Painter came off the bench in a big way, posting an impressive 12 & 12. Both of these guys didn’t just grab loose balls, but they attacked the glass on each play.

Tyler Harris – Harris didn’t look like a freshman tonight. His first collegiate basket was a three pointer from the top of the key that he fired with extreme confidence. Harris scored 8 points in 7 minutes of play, connecting on three of his four field goal attempts. His poise was noticeable, and I’m sure the staff noticed. Don’t be surprised to see Harris get more minutes on Sunday.

8 steals – Lorenzo Brown took his coaches challenge. Coach Gottfried told Lorenzo Brown that he thought he didn’t play good defense in the exhibition earlier this week. In response, the new Wolfpack point guard snagged 8 steals. To put this in perspective, as a team last year, 10 steals was the most collected in a single game. Lorenzo was everywhere. He also dished 9 dimes, and should have had more, if his teammates would have finished on quite a few easy baskets.

Concerns

FG % – The Pack didn’t shoot tremendously well tonight. They shot 43.9% from the field and 31.6% from three point land. A majority of the shots that were missed weren’t poor decisions, but rather wide open shots. One has to remember that this team isn’t used to running like this. Finishing on the break isn’t easy. Hitting open shots when your fatigued is tough. This team will need to learn to knock down these shots if it wants to be successful.

Alex Johnson – I appreciated the intensity in which transfer point guard Alex Johnson played the game. With that being said, Johnson’s game wasn’t pretty. He only connected on 2 of his 12 shots. He also had five turnovers to go with only one assist.

Go Up Strong – Richard Howell might have had a double-double tonight, but his numbers could have, and should have been much more impressive. Very often, he found his shots getting swatted away, or his finger roll’s came up short. In order for Howell to truly be a force in the post, he has to learn to play with power in the post."

painter and howell had double-doubles. brown could have had a triple double if he had a couple more steals and if one of the several easy lay-ups that were missed after he dished went in.
