i like everything they've done since rook, but can see why others wouldn't. "you as you were" is probably my favorite track on the new one.

not sure where to post this, but I kind of want what Grayson was shooting up when he decided U2 junior, aka Ghetters of the Dreamo would be a good band to fill in for even the Light Pines...

Really into Be Strong from The 2 Bears (featuring one of the dudes from Hot Chip) and Glass Swords from Rustie (a 2011 release) right now.

Since I like to complain and all, the Sacred Bones releases have always kinda annoyed me. (same font and wording on every album; blatant record label logo, etc)

That's one of my favorite things about them.

Also, the Dead Oceans label rules.

What does Dead Oceans do, aside from sign the Explorers Club, which is just ridiculous mashups of the Beach Boys/Ronettes, etc.

^^ I meant the actual "Dead Oceans" labels they put on the records.

I miss when all of the records on a certain imprint had the same label, and when those labels were worth looking at.

Right, but the Sub Pop label (or the Jagjaguwar label, for another example) is pretty boring.

The Dead Oceans label looks awesome. I'd post one, but I'm at work and I don't think there are any sitting around.

kind of glad i had lowered expectations for the new andrew bird. i like it, and i'm sure it'll grow on me since all of his albums do. there's some seriously good violin. i swear i read something a few months ago about how it was going to be more pop oriented. it's definitely not. there are throwbacks to lyrics in a couple of his older songs too, which i think is kinda neat.

Took a listen to the Frankie Rose album yesterday after the review was posted. Really dug the track Night Swim. They are playing an all girl band show in DC that I'll probably check out.

Pretty sure it doesn't take much to put out a better album than the Vivian Girls, so I call bullshit on that statement.

[Edited on February 22, 2012 at 4:01 PM. Reason : La Sera is also really, really bad.]

I have to say, the shittiest show I've ever seen was Vivian Girls and Ariel Pink (this was before Before Today came out, I wanna say 2009) at 506.

In the words of Ben Folds, it was like the battle of who could care less. Two bands that just did not give a shit and it showed.

All that being said, I don't hate Vivian Girls' albums. They're aight.

i think she takes a lot of risks on this record that other bands she's been in aren't willing to take. great album. probably will try to catch her show at 506 in april.

figured this doesn't warrant its own thread, but are any of you on soundcloud? i've used it for a while but just started an account and would be interested in following some of you. i guess if you are, PM me your user name or something? i don't want to turn this thread into "post your soundcloud account" for the next page. i don't really care whether or not you follow me.

i think people who already like andrew bird will really enjoy that album (with the exception of NumbWall), but everyone else will think it's pretty meh. danse carribe, lazy projector, near death experience experience, lusitania, and hole in the ocean floor are all pretty outstanding in my opinion. i could do without give it away and eyeoneye. the filler instrumental tracks seem better than usual on this too.

yeah after i posted i thought this might have already been posted or leaked and listened to, went back to read, and saw his review. I've listened to half of it, and thus far i'm very pleased. Desperation Breeds was a nice opener and got me excited for the rest. Danse Carribe is so far my favorite.

speaking of his review

Quote :
"He also recycles way too many riffs and instrumental elements from his back-catalogue, particularly the recent Norman soundtrack he composed."

i noticed this too, but it's nothing new. he reworked 2 songs from weather systems and put them on the mysterious production of eggs and armchair apocrypha, and he took an old bowl of fire song and put it on noble beast. i don't have a problem with him pulling material from the norman soundtrack on this one. i doubt many people even listened to that. haha, he even took darkmatter from armchair apocrypha and put that on norman. at least he's just plagiarizing himself and not someone else, right?

and that annie clark duet god damn rules

^^ interesting. i didn't know that.

it's weird to me how different his vocals sounds in OR versus shearwater. I fucking love the way he sings on such OR songs as 'Lost Coastlines'-- low, deep, and soulful. His shearwater singing is too high-pitched and theatrical for me.
