gg to the Os. I have felt bad for this team ever since that bullshit Jeffery Maier homerun crap that basically cost the Os that 1996 series against the Yankees. Yeah maybe the Yankees still win that series, but the Os would have been in control had they won that game. Braves and Orioles should have met that year for the WS, but instead the Yankees began their dynasty. /tinfoilhat 9/7/2012 10:44:08 AM |

let me get in on the Jeffrey Maier hatred.
Had the shoe been on the other foot, and he was simply a Yankee version of Steve Bartman, he'd be in witness protection. Instead he cheats the other team, and they treat him like a hero.
Fuck that kid, fuck the yankees, and fuck New York as a staff, record label, and as a motherfuckin crew. 9/7/2012 1:20:12 PM |

i used to hate the yankees for a really long time because of jeffrey maier, but a few years ago i just stopped caring. the fans and media in new york made that whole episode what it was, and it sucks that the o's had to be the ones who got screwed because of it, but now the only frustration i feel about it is towards MLB for not having instant replay that far back even though it wasn't even a talking point. i was the same age as jeffrey maier when it happened. i would've done the same thing if i was him. no reason to bear irrational hatred towards a child because MLB has always been run by a bunch of backwards senior citizens who fear progress and change because they feel threatened by it.
it's nice to not get pissed off at the sight of a yankees hat anymore. don't get me wrong though. i still dislike them and have been rubbing it in lately against my friend who is a yankees fan and would love it if they and the red sox spent a few years looking up at the rest of the division

explain?
we were picked to lose 100+ games this season
i get that Baltimore is an awful franchise that hasn't won shit since I was in grade school (back when I lived in the DC area), but the A's haven't really been relevant in a while either.
why are the O's a more likeable team with a 'better' story? I call East Coast bias...

much more recently than 1997. look at your records since then, most notably 2000-2006. the 2012 orioles should not be where they are right now, and i finally embraced them and stopped waiting for the inevitable collapse, but it's taken a lot of luck, injuries to other teams within the division, and players performing better than they really should be performing. the orioles are not built for long term success. our farm system is not good, and bullpens (one of our major strengths) are too volatile from year to year to expect similar results next year and beyond. we've also made more roster moves than i've ever seen and have moved players to different positions and have found success every time. a lot of really improbable shit has gone right. we have to win this year because next year will probably be business as usual. this team is a testament to weird ass random shit happening in baseball
it's not east coast bias or because i'm an orioles fan. i like seeing the a's do well, but it's just an objectively better story given what's happened over the last 15 years. if you substituted the o's for the pirates i'd say the same thing. everyone likes seeing the underdog win unless the underdog is the yankees.
i will be pulling for the a's if they're still playing baseball when the o's are done though

besides the fact that Baltimore just lost to Oakland how exactly are they better?
at baseball? i dunno, i think they are both pretty evenly matched. not a huge payroll for either team and not a ton of name brand talent. The game I saw was pretty close and evenly matched, so I'm not exactly buying that argument.
if you're arguing cities, that's a big LOL to me.
Oakland is 10x the city that Baltimore is. It's got much better weather, far more culture and flavor, world class restaurants and a pretty kick-ass nightlife, and it's like a 10 min drive from one of the most dynamic cities in the world (SF). I grew up in the DC area and spent plenty of time in Baltimore, and while it has its charms (pun intended), its not even close to anything Oakland has to offer. Not even close. Not saying Baltimore sucks or it's a shithole or anything, but Oakland is so much nicer it's not even funny...9/15/2012 3:10:22 AM |

good question.
I really didn't care for baseball until I moved to California. The Orioles weren't that good when I was a kid, so my parents never wanted to drive all the way from NOVA to Baltimore to watch a losing team I guess. Until you actually go to a baseball game and start following it more closely, baseball is a pretty boring sport to watch on television.
It really wasn't until I started going to Padres games with friends in 2005 that my interest in baseball grew. When I moved to the Bay Area a few years later, people were even more into baseball than football or basketball, so I got dragged to a ton of $2 A's game and I started liking it more and more.
By no means am I the most knowledgeable baseball fan (wayyyy more into football/college hoops), but I really enjoy the gameday experience at an MLB game. Being able to take BART to an A's game and being around really friendly/knowledgeable baseball fans is a big part of why I like the game too...
And as for the Nats? Well they weren't even around until I'd already moved to CA. Being that they're from the general area I grew up in, I'm glad to see them do well this season. I don't dislike the Orioles either btw, and it's cool they're having a similar season. 9/15/2012 5:22:35 PM |

i see. i wish the a's could get a better stadium since the coliseum is apparently just a really shitty place to both play and watch baseball. it sucks that the giants are interfering with any attempt to set up a new stadium anywhere near the bay area even though they most likely wouldn't suffer from it at all. the a's would probably be able to bring in a lot more revenue, but i don't know if ownership would shoot for a publicly funded stadium. i imagine that'd be a pretty unpopular proposal in california right now. 9/15/2012 5:35:28 PM |
UJustWait84 All American 25821 Posts user info edit post |
the sad thing is that there a plenty of places to put an A's stadium that would yield similar attendance results as the Giants in ATT park. If you've ever been to a game there, it's like paradise compared to the dumpy O.co
They could easily build a waterfront stadium in Jack London Square which has tons of bars/restaurants and easy access to mass transit OR there's other options for a downtown/uptown stadium which offers the same exact thing. Last night was, by far, the largest crowd I've ever seen at an A's game and the atmosphere was just electrifying. Usually when the Yankees/Redsox/Dodgers/Giants are playing the A's, the stadium more filled with opposing fans than A's fans 9/15/2012 5:43:43 PM |

^^i wouldn't call splitting a series "blowing it"...3 games against the shitty Red Sox should give them a chance to make up ground. then 3 in Tampa to close out, and they've played the Rays very well this season. all is not lost as they are 1.5 games behind the Yankees. 9/27/2012 10:57:12 AM |
