Problem with getting a kindle fire one is that the ports aren't all in the same places so while the outside will have everything fit, you'll block some of the ports, most notably the speaker. Since most of the cases made for the kindle fire are going to be made for the nexus 7, I would just buy one for the nexus 7.

I was about to ask this. I posted in android thread. I'm new to android. Is there no standby? I'll wake up my nexus the next day and half the battery will be gone. I'm used to iOS devices that last a week or more on standby if the screens off with no battery discharge. Is it best practice to actually shut it down every night?

^I suggest turning it off when not in use. it takes like 15 seconds to boot, so do that.

I've been getting about 12-15 hours of mixed usage with mine.

Power loss overnight has generally been <1%. Unless you have shit tons of push apps, or leave on GPS/Bluetooth or have something streaming, it shouldn't use nearly any battery when the screen is off.

Having low light, low wifi, internet screen flickering problem that a large portion of people are having. I believe Google says it's a hardware issue and they are addressing the problem. RMA process is pretty good though. They send you a new one then you send yours back.

Is browsing the google play book store any better on the actual device than it is on the internet? Because damn that's horrible. There's no way to really browse books since they only give you 3 pages in a category and no star/rating under the books anyway.

I'd really enjoy using that sexy library widget on the homepage but considering Amazon's store is hundreds of times better...

i'm thinking about getting a tablet for my wife now that she's back in grad school...she's mentioned wanting a netbook, but i feel like those are quickly becoming obsolete and if i'm going to spend the money, i feel like it should offer something more than a small, light, under-performing laptop

that said...i think she'd like a physical keyboard of some kind so that she can quickly take notes (and yes, i realize that at this point, it practically IS a netbook...but it has the advantage of not NEEDING the keyboard)

thoughts on the different options out there? i'd like to keep it around or under $250 for everything (tablet and BT keyboard)...i'm not opposed to getting something used if that's the best option (though i'm secretly hoping the nexus is the best so i can get one )

I don't know if that's worth getting over a nexus + separate keyboard, but I don't know how much a decent bluetooth keyboard would cost.

^^Get the tablet first and five the on-screen keyboard a try. I was giving a lot of tought about which keyboard to get for my iPad, should it be built into the cover or should I get a full-size one. After using it without a physical keyboard for a couple of days, I found that with the autocorrect and with the tablet in the landscape mode, I can type just as fast as on a regular keyboard, and probably faster than i could on any portable one. Ergonomics of typing onthe screen is really not bad if you have a case that will angle the tablet up slightly. The only major advantage that you get with a physical keyboard is the extra screen real estate.

On the other note, although I'd never give up my iPad, there is one cool thing that Nexus 7 can do that is almost worth the money for me to pick it up in addition to the iPad: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.dslrcontroller&hl=en

considering that the cheapest decent stand alone USB controller is about 180 bucks and does not feature monitor functionality, 200 bucks for the nexus 7 and 15 more bucks for the software and the cable sounds like a great deal.

Maybe for women that have long fingernails physical keyboard can be of much help.

When picking a keyboard there is a set of tradeoffs to consider:

Folio cases with built-in keyboards (sometimes keyboard is removable, which is a plus). Offer protection but add bulk even when you don’t need them. A few of them have adjustable tablet viewing angle and/or vertical orientation, but most of them do not.

You can get a portable keyboard optimized for Android tablets (will have physical shortcut buttons for major functions, as well as a slot which will hold your tablet upright. Some of them clamp on to your tablet and offer screen protection, kind of bridging the gap with folios, but most of the clamp-on type do not let your use your tablet as a intended (as a tablet) without removing it from the case.

You can get a nice full size (or close to it) bluetooth keyboard so you do not sacrifice the ergonomics. Some of them come with a stand, or you can use your case as a stand. The advantage of that is being able to position the tablet independently from the keyboard. You gain a lot of weight and have to carry it separately though. The logitech above is a good example. It is pretty solidly built, but significantly heavier than some of the other portable keyboards.

Finally you can go to TJ maxx or Amazon, get a 35 dollar generic portable bluetooth keyboard, and call it a day.

As far as the quality of the actual keys, I understand the tactile feel varies dramatically from keyboard to keyboard, and so does user preference. Island-style keys tend to be more favored.
But there is no way you can make that decision for her. Most box stores do not have the keyboards on display. So you have to rely on user reviews on the internets and on a store with a good return policy.

Has anyone used a 10.1" Android tablet that they like better than the Nexus? I like the Nexus but I'm worried that after some time I'll get tired of the 7" screen since I'll be using it a lot for reading.

I'm also interested in hearing from someone who has been using it for a while and doesn't mind the screen size.

What are you reading? A Kindle screen is only 6" which is similar to most paperbacks. I don't mind reading on my 10" if it's on a table but most of the time I prefer the smaller and lighter form factor of a Kindle over a tablet. Not to mention you can actually read with them outside.

Mostly pdfs, textbooks and some journals that aren't necessarily optimized for tablets. I have a Kindle, but it's the regular one, not the fire. I would like to have magazines and possibly graphic novels on it to reduce the physical space they take up and add portability. Normally, my laptop would be fine but a few things I have purchased from Amazon lately aren't compatible with the Kindle app.

The Acer looks nice. Its a bit dated, but should be more than sufficient. You should look into seeing if you can run Jelly Bean on it as well. I think Acer provides a factory OTA update to ICS.

nexus has a nicer screen, even though it is smaller. 1280x800 at 7 inches is pretty close to the pixel pitch of MacBook Pro retina display. It is also an IPS screen, where Acer doesn't explicitly say that it has IPS, meaning it is more likely to be TN.

Just picked up a 16gb tonight and can't get it to charge in my car. I'm using the same USB charger that I use with my phone & old iPad (5 volt / 1 amp). Do these have some kind of weird charging restrictions? I tried both charging ports on the plug and 2 different cables (all of which charge my GS3 fine). Yes, it charges fine (& quickly) on AC power both with the stock charger & my GS3 charger.

After a lot more research today it sounds like it is charging but just doesn't show it since the stock chargers has two of the pins connected (data and something else). I'll have to play with it more to see if that's actually the case.

I have an A200 with ICS. I love it and its a great machine. I would say if you can get one for $250 or so its WELL worth it weight in gold.

I was about to say that bmel got a Nexus 7 for use in class and loves it. She deosn't take notes on it as far as I know, more for accessing online documents and shit during class, but its hard to take notes on a tablet regardless of display size. The small size of the Nexus fits easily into a purse and she dislikes the size of my bigger tablet for general use (probably a 10" screen, Asus Transformer).

Looks like quag ordered the big tablet anyway though

yeah, i went ahead and got the bigger one because it was a good deal (IMO) and my GUESS is that she will prefer the larger screen

she already takes a computer bag and her 14" laptop to class and i don't think a smaller tablet would change the fact that she's going to be taking a full bag over a purse since she has to take books, anyway

besides, i figured that the smaller tablets are more prevalent today than they used to be and i can always sell the iconia and choose from several smaller options if it turns out she doesn't like it (and she might not)

I think I'm going to end up purchasing one of these in the next week or so.. I figure for $200 or $250 that's a pretty good deal. I wanted to wait for the Windows 8 tablets because I really like the WP and think the whole tile thing is pretty easy to use. But they are all way to pricey for what I actually need it for. I'm mostly going to use it at work since I'm here 3rd shift to browse the web, read, watch a show or two and maybe play some games when things are slow. Also I figure it would be fun to take on trips.


If I want to watch a tv show I may have downloaded I think I can save it to a USB drive and use a USB OTG device to play the shows instead of moving it over the wireless network of uploaded it connecting to my PC. Just wanted to make sure this was possible. This way I can manage a flash drive instead of filling up the HDD for the Nexus.


Also anything else you guys might do when you get one?

I'm getting one to replace my (first gen) Nook Color and netbook, neither of which can really stream videos much at all, and it'll be my general browsing machine aside from my desktop.

I'm also picking up a Logitech bluetooth keyboard that comes heavily recommended from some Android communities.

Got one about a month ago. Love it. However the speakers blew in the first week that I had it and apparently this is a common problem. I exchanged it and haven't really used the speakers since for that reason. I have some X-Mini speakers that are pretty awesome so I just use those.

Anyone else had problems with the speaker?

It's a pain in the ass. Better to just get the 32gb nexus and load 20-25gb of content a a time on it. Not having an sd slot is the one thing I miss in the nexus compared to my other android tablets.
